  • Aliens and Amazons: Myth, Comics and the Cold War Mentality in Fifth-Century Athens and Postwar America
ALIENS AND AMAZONS: MYTH, COMICS AND THE COLD WAR MENTALITY IN FIFTH-CENTURY ATHENS AND POSTWAR AMERICA Peter L. Kuebeck A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2006 Committee: Leigh Ann Wheeler, Advisor James M. Pfundstein Robert Buffington ii ABSTRACT Leigh Ann Wheeler, Advisor Comic books and classical culture seem to be increasingly linked in recent years, whether through crossovers into one another's media or through portrayals in the mass media itself. Such a connection begs the question of the actual cultural relevance between these two particular cultural products and whether or not two such products can be found to be relevant to one another when separated by time and space - indeed, if two separate cultures experienced similar cultural pressures, would these cultural products represent these pressures in similar ways? Given previous scholarly work linking the Cold War-era in the United States and the Peloponnesian War in fifth-century Greece politically, this thesis argued that a cultural "Cold War mentality" existed both in early postwar America and fifth-century Athens, and that this "Cold War mentality" is exhibited similarly in the comic books and mythology produced in those eras. This mentality is comprised of three stages: increased patriotism, a necessary identification of a cultural other, and attempts by a threatened male society to obtain psychological power through the "domestication" of women. The methods of this thesis included cultural research as well as research into myth and comic books of the respective eras.

  • Hellboy.Txt Hellboy Is a Fictional Superhero Created by Writer‐Artist Mike Mignola
Hellboy.txt Hellboy is a fictional superhero created by writer‐artist Mike Mignola. The character first appeared in San Diego Comic‐Con Comics #2 (August 1993), and has since appeared in various eponymous miniseries, one‐shots and intercompany crossovers. The character has been adapted into three live‐action feature films. Two starring Ron Perlman in 2004 and 2008 in the title role, and one in 2019 which starred David Harbour, as well as two straight‐to‐DVD animated films, and three video games – Asylum Seeker, The Science of Evil, and as a playable character in Injustice 2. A well‐meaning half‐Demon (or Cambion) whose true name is Anung Un Rama ("and upon his brow is set a crown of flame"), Hellboy was summoned from Hell to Earth as a baby by Nazi occultists (spawning his hatred for the Third Reich). He was discovered on a fictional Outer Hebrides Island by the Allied Forces; amongst them, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who formed the United States Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.). In time, Hellboy grew to be a large, red‐skinned adult with a tail, horns (which he files off, leaving behind circular stumps on his forehead), cloven hooves for feet, and an oversized right hand made of stone (the "Right Hand of Doom"). He has been described as smelling of dry‐roasted peanuts. Although a bit gruff, he shows none of the malevolence thought to be intrinsic to classical demons and has an ironic sense of humor. This is said to be because of his upbringing under Professor Bruttenholm, who raised him as a normal boy.

  • The Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail
    - THE GATES OF HELL SHALL NOT PREVAIL - ii FOREWORD In 1983 Peter and Rebekah Laue self-published a book titled: The Wood Blossom – A Search for Sanity in an Insensitive World. At that time 1,500 copies were printed and distributed over the next few years until the supply was exhausted. Their friend Mary Scott read one of the ten manuscripts that were circulated in hopes of finding a publisher who would risk publishing a book by an unknown author. No publisher came forward at that time. Mary Scott offered to sell her stocks so that the book could be published as soon as possible. Peter and Rebekah gratefully accepted the offer. Mary loves to give books she considers valuable as Christmas presents and chose to give one hundred copies to friends and family beginning with Christmas of 1983. FRONT & BACK COVERS OF THE FIRST EDITION The above title and cover is certainly a far cry from the new title but very appropriate as seen from the vantage point of 25 years later. The fact that the writer is now living in a beautiful log cabin on Lake Pagosa with his handmaiden Rebekah and is not incarcerated in a prison or mental institution is only by God’s grace. The fact that he did not succumb to voices and iii suggestions that were from the pit of hell, is a matter of God’s grace. The fact that he is not subdued by medication to corral the extremes in his personality is a matter of God’s grace. The fact that the mortgage on Peter and Rebekah’s home was paid off seventeen years ahead of schedule is a matter of God’s grace.

Lewis has been approved for the Department of Religious Studies _________________________________ Dr. Deborah Whitehead _________________________________ Dr. Deepti Misri ________________________________ Dr. Denice Walker ________________________________ Dr. Robert Buffington May 5th, 2016 The final copy of this thesis has been examined by the signatories, and we find that both the content and the form meet acceptable presentation standards of scholarly work in the above mentioned discipline. iii Lewis, Elizabeth E. (M.A., Religious Studies) To Hell and Back: Power, Violence, and Sexuality in Urban Fantasy Thesis directed by Assistant Professor Deborah Whitehead This thesis project is an interdisciplinary study of the contemporary mass-market fiction genre urban fantasy. It provides an intersectional feminist analysis of the urban fantasy genre’s significance for both religious studies and women’s studies. It examines how the city is imagined as a racialized locus of power and magic, and how women utilize the genre’s conventions to explore and depict issues of gendered and sexualized violence against women through narratives of supernatural transformation. It also contextualizes urban fantasy in a recent surge of critique by authors and readers against the science fiction and fantasy publishing industry’s tendency to erase people of color from a genre defined by depictions of urban life.
