This book offers a vision and a strategy. Productive urban landscapes have two huge challenges to address: CO2 emissions are projected to increase by two-thirds in the next 20 years, and as the global food production increases so does the number of people going hungry, with the number of urban hungry soaring. The symbiotic relationship between a productive landscape and the human settlement system is as old as civilization. During the past 200 years that millennium-old positive relationship deteriorated into a further and further separation of town and landscape. The good news is that during the past quarter-century the agricul- ture industry has turned a corner towards greater integration with our modern cities. One of the earliest archeological evidences of CPULs (4,000 years ago) are the semi-desert towns of Persia. Underground aqueducts brought mountain water to oases where intensive food production was conducted, substantially based on the use of urban waste within the settlement. A marvellous example in history is Machu Picchu in Peru. The Spaniards did not discover this nutritionally self-reliant city for 100 years. Scarce water was reused time and again, step-by-step down the mountain. Biointensive vegetable beds were designed to catch the afternoon sun and stretch the season. Water and land crops were brought together to resist the frequent mountain frost. There are many such stories from all corners of the earth. The industrial revolution brought the railroads, chemical fertilizers, petroleum fuel, tinned food and refrigera- tion and a separation of the food system from where we live. Socially this converted to the creation of the ‘city slicker’ and of the ‘country bumpkin’.

Beyond the Thames Barrier, the route is waymarked with the Thames Barge symbol rather than the National Trail acorn. This is because the Thames Path National Trail officially ends at the Thames Barrier but it is possible to continue the walk as far as the boundary with Kent. There is a continuous riverside path all the way along the Thames as far as the River Darent on the Bexley boundary with Dartford. There are plans to extend further through the Kent side of the Thames Gateway. Eventually it is hoped the 'Source to Sea' Path will materialise on both sides of the Thames. The working river displays all the muscularity of its ancient history, built up by hard graft since Henry VIII's royal dockyard at Woolwich was established to build a new generation of naval warships. Woolwich Arsenal grew up alongside to supply munitions, and Thamesmead was built on a vast network of 'tumps' to contain explosions, some of which can still be seen. Across the river, equally vast operations are visible where giant cranes move and shape the last landfill into new hillsides and Ford at Dagenham's wind turbines symbolise the post-industrial end of oil. The cargo ships now come only as far as Tilbury and the vast sea container ports on the north side of the river; whereas Erith with its pier, once a Victorian pleasure resort, retains a seaside feel.

In the quest for information of use to bumble bee conservation the potential of our flower-rich cities has been overlooked. The overall aim of this study was to determine the status and foraging requirements of bumble bees in the urban environment provided by the city of London, U.K. My principal findings are as follows. Six common species and three rare species were identified. The greatest diversity of Bombus species was found in the east of London. Garden and wasteland habitats attracted the greatest abundance of workers and diversity of Bombus species.

The Framework sets out my vision for the Valley, how it could change over the next decade, and what that change would mean for residents, businesses, landowners, public authorities and other stakeholders. It builds on the strategic planning policies set out in my 2004 London Plan for an area of nearly 1450 hectares, extending from the Thames in the south to Leyton in the north, straddling the borders of Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Waltham Forest. The Lower Lea Valley is currently characterised by large areas of derelict industrial land and poor housing. Much of the land is fragmented, polluted and divided by waterways, overhead pylons, roads and railways. My aim is to build on the area’s unique network of waterways and islands to attract new investment and opportunities, and to transform the Valley into a new sustainable, mixed use city district, fully integrated into London’s existing urban fabric.
