  • Chapter Vi Religious Fairs in Maharashtra
CHAPTER VI RELIGIOUS FAIRS IN MAHARASHTRA CHAPTER - VI RELIGIOUS FAIRS IN MAHARASHTRA 1) INTRODUCTION: Pair is one of the oldest socio-economic and cultural institutions that served a variety of purposes during the past and it serves them, even now. The practice of pilgrimage in Hinduism follows from some of the basic underpinnings of its philosophy. Perhaps the earliest allusion to the practice of pilgrimage in Indian literature is to be found in the Aitareya Brahmana of the Rigveda. References to pilgrimage are also found in various religious scriptures as "Nadistuti" (river-hymn), Manu Smrlti and Puranas. The practice of Pilgrimage, with its ancient and diverse origins, continues to be popular among the Hindus. In fact, one can mention, without fear of contradiction, that more people now visit more sacred places than ever before in the history of India . This can be explained on the ground that increased facilities of travel are offered by government and private agencies. Several tourist agencies offer round tour packages providing for visits to places of religious interest and large cities etc. Even students visit religious and other places of interest on study tours by chartered buses hired by the school authorities. Of course, this new trend is the result of ever increasing rural and urban prosperity on the one hand and the general trend of travelling to different areas partly as a need of the modern civilization and partly the affliction -119- for one's own religion. In ancient times most people lived on farms or on large estates. There were no shops. Also there were not enough goods or people for daily trade.

  • Restructuring of Tulja Bhavani Temple Complex and It’S Surrounds
RESTRUCTURING OF TULJA BHAVANI TEMPLE COMPLEX AND IT’S SURROUNDS “It’s Navratri and the spectacle beholds me - an un-choreographed yet rhythmic procession of human traffic - animated, winding and waiting its way to the temple as if in a trance. The complex is unfolding like a giant maze. As I take the sequence of platforms and steps, patterns are finding me. It looks like an un-composed fusion of built volumes giving shape to peculiar spaces between them. Somewhere at the end of these disjointed pieces, is the small but compelling temple with a perfect form, anchoring this entire place. I wonder how the whole complex evolved, putting on layers of materials, craft and techniques of construction, not to mention the overlays of patina - dulled, sobered and becoming richer all the time. The multiplicity of form and detail is spanning time itself and standing testimony to the temple’s evolution into an important place of worship. As I see the pilgrims pouring from the fort-wall into a vast landscape after the darshan, I can’t but stop wondering the sudden openness and spatial relief from the controlled path inside the temple. It’s like a gushing, meandering river meeting the ocean. I can’t but help relate it to the transition of the pilgrim himself - from a dense huddle to a vacuum, from animated energy to serene silences. Was it always planned like this? The clues and questions are breaking-in; I can build a sacred space but what can I do for an already entranced and immersed pilgrim? Can I design beyond the defined and the quantifiable; more than giving him amenities and services? Is the transition of the pilgrim a direction, perhaps to make a garden, cascading waterfall, or a quiet place to meditate? Can these patterns translate into a lead for future growth? It’s a revelation … A place of worship is more than just a space where pilgrims converge for prescribed rituals and spiritual fulfillment.

The fort is spread in an area of around 700 acres. The fort has many palaces, temples, towers and other structures built by many Rajput rulers. The fort was attacked by many rulers like the kings of Gujarat Sultanate, Delhi Sultanate, and Mughal Dynasty. Currently the fort has become UNESCO World Heritage site and it was included in the list in 2013 by World Heritage Committee. Chittorgarh Chittorgarh is situated on the banks of Berach and Gambhiri rivers. It was the capital of Sisodia Rajputs. The town was attacked thrice and the ladies of the Rajput rulers performed Jauhar in order to save themselves from enemies. The Rajputs that ruled Chittorgarh believed in sacrificing their lives rather than surrendering to the enemy. Previously the name of the town was Chitrakut when it was under the Mori dynasty. Later on, Bappa Rawal overtook the kingdom and founded the kingdom of Mewar. Another legend says that Bappa Rawal got this town as a dowry from the last ruler of Solanki dynasty after marriage.
