The painting, which proves to be of excellent quality, is a study dedicated to the famous altarpiece depicting the 'Vision of San Girolamo', created by Parmigianino in 1526 for the church of San Salvatore in Rome, and now housed in the National Gallery in London (1). His contemporaries, in fact, were able to recognize the beauty of the style and the refinement of the stroke that characterized his works. Among the names of painters close to Parmigianino, Girolamo Bedoli-Mazzola (Parma 1500 - 1569) or Jacopo Zanguidi known as Bertoja (Parma 1544 - 1574), both of his pupils, extremely influenced by him, so much so that the authorship of some paintings is still debated. In fact, the productions by these artists of copies and studies taken from the master are known, confirming the inclination of many painters in the workshop to replicate the most successful cartoons. The work fascinates, and certainly fascinated also in the sixteenth century, for the aristocratic elegance of the figure of the Baptist who, intensely scrutinizing the viewer with almost hypnotic eyes, twists his body which ends with the gesture of the hand to ideally point towards the top. In this 'serpentine' pose, the debt to Michelangelo emerges, from the accentuated and complexly posed musculature, of which Parmigianino was able to grasp the most innovative aspect constituted by the powerful monumentality.
