Noted architect William Strickland designed this graceful structure and he considered it his crowning achievement. The building construction began with the laying of the cornerstone on July 4, 1845 and continued until 1859. One of the oldest working capitols in the United States, the Tennessee State Capitol serves as home of the Tennessee General Assembly and houses the governor’s office and the offices of the constitutional officers (Secretary of State, Comptroller, State Treasurer). The National Park Service had the building, one of 12 state capitols that does not have a dome, to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and named it a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
