    Out of My Mouth: The ‘Photosculptures’ of Alina Szapocznikow 3 June – 29 August 2010 “I am convinced that among all the manifestations of impermanence, the human body is the most fragile, the only source of all joy, all pain and of all truth…” Alina Szapocznikow, 1972. This exhibition features a remarkable series of works created by Alina Szapocznikow in 1971. Simply titled ‘Photosculptures’, these images depict pieces of gum which have been chewed by the artist to produce an assortment of abject sculptural forms. As the title implies, Szapocznikow regarded photography itself as a sculptural medium which allowed her to explore formal qualities such as scale, texture and contrast. As she stated in the accompanying text: “It is sufficient to photograph and enlarge my masticatory discoveries to create the event of a sculptural presence.” Throughout her career the body was the principal focus of Szapocznikow’s art. Moving on from more conventional figure sculpture, from the mid 1950s she began experimenting with new materials and production methods. She took casts of her own face and body parts and translated them into grotesque and sexually-charged assemblages. Thus, the body became not only the subject of her work but the active agent through which sculptural forms could be created. Born in 1926 to a Jewish family in Kalisz, Poland, Szapocznikow survived the concentration camps of Bergen-Belsen and Teresienstadt during World War II. She went on to study sculpture in Prague and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Returning to Poland in 1951, she established a reputation as a figurative sculptor through official commissions, such as the 1953 ‘Monument to Russian-Polish Friendship’.

    EXHIBITIONS PROGRAMME 2017 – 19 AUTUMN / WINTER 2017 – 18 ALINA SZAPOCZNIKOW: Human LANDSCAPES 21 OCTOBER 2017 – 28 JANUARY 2018 The first major UK retrospective of Polish artist Alina Szapocznikow (1926 – 1973), one of the most important, yet for many years, over- looked artists of the 20th century. The exhibition will bring together over 100 works spanning Szapocznikow’s career, including a selection of her drawings, which have rarely been publicly displayed. Working through one of the most tumultuous periods in history, Szapocznikow created a body of work that explored her own physicality against a backdrop of social and political upheaval. The exhibition will trace a chronological path through Szapocznikow’s work, demonstrating how she consistently dismantled a classical ideal of Alina Szapocznikow, Bouquet II, 1966. DAUGHTERS OF NECESSITY: SERENA KORDA AND WAKEFIELD’S CERAMICS 2 DECEMBER 2017 – 5 July 2018 Started in the 1930s, Wakefield’s ceramic collection includes some of the great names of modern pottery, including Bernard Leach, Barbara Cass, Lucie Rie and Hans Coper. For this exhibition, London-based British artist Serena Korda will select highlights from Wakefield’s collection to show alongside her own work. Korda combines sound with ceramics exploring their history and variety of uses. On display will be a new presentation of her ceramic sound installation Hold Fast, Stand Sure, I Scream a Revolution, originally commissioned by Glasgow School of Art, Comar and Glasgow International 2016 alongside new work, currently being developed, that will be exhibited for the first time at The Hepworth Wakefield.

    THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART PRESENTS ALINA SZAPOCZNIKOW: SCULPTURE UNDONE, 1955-1972 Artist Radically Reconceptualized Sculpture with Provocative Works Reflecting Themes of the Body Alina Szapocznikow: Sculpture Undone, 1955–1972 October 7, 2012–January 28, 2013 Special Exhibitions Gallery, third floor NEW YORK, October 2, 2012— (Fétiche VII) (Fetish VII), 1971 and Goldfinger, 1965, are examples of the artist’s increasing experimentation with the fragmented body. All remain as idiosyncratic and culturally resonant today as they did during her lifetime. Her Tumors series, with its clustered orbs, recalls the body turned against itself by cancer (Szapocznikow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1969). In Tumeurs personnifiées (Tumors personified), 1971, casts of the artist’s disembodied face that morph into variously shaped lumps are scattered across the ground in a work that visually conjures cancerous growths and their invasion of the human body. Breaking from the conventions of display for traditional sculpture, Szapocnzikow intended these personalized forms to lie on gravel at floor level. They reveal a sense of humor and playfulness even when dealing with direct references to her declining health. As with many of her works from this time, Souvenir I, 1971, features photographs embedded in waxy polyester resin. In this case, an image of the artist as a smiling young girl is juxtaposed with one of a concentration camp victim. This is the first direct reference in Szapocznikow’s work to the horrors of the Holocaust, a topic she seldom spoke about despite her first-hand experience as a camp survivor. In Szapocznikow’s final body of work, the Herbier (Herbarium) sculptures, she moved radically back to a reworked figuration, merging the body with the form and material of her sculptures.

Beginning 29 October 2019, Hauser & Wirth will present ‘To Exalt the Ephemeral: Alina Szapocznikow, 1962 – 1972,’ a selection of sculptural works that together survey the expressive force of the Polish artist’s material innovations in the last decade of her life. This is the gallery’s first solo exhibition devoted to Szapocznikow since undertaking representation of her estate in May 2018. The details of Szapocznikow’s biography have been well documented. Born in Poland to a Jewish family in 1926, she survived the horrors of concentration camps as a teenager. In the postwar years, moving from Prague to Paris, she ultimately abandoned the Socialist Realism endorsed by the Polish government, as well as the prevailing winds of modernist abstraction, to embrace Surrealist tendencies and the Pop-influenced New Realism of the Paris avant-garde, championed by Pierre Restany. Working furiously as she cycled through phases of artistic growth, Szapocznikow engaged themes related to the body with full intensity. She succumbed to cancer in 1973, at the age of 46. In the last decade of her life, Szapocznikow’s pioneering engagement with new materials acquired particular focus and force, yielding works that dramatically challenged the traditional language of sculpture and presaged approaches central to art today.

The artist’s objects are guided by their material processes, where a property of the material is exposed or undone through developing the work. Her glass busts and breasts, while erotically charged, also are distinctly shaped to exaggerate the medium’s ability to achieve hollowness without intensely extracting material. These truncated body parts function like phantom limbs, highlighting absence as much as they draw the viewer in to real forms. In stone, Mahmoud works with the contrasting strength and fragility of the material. Each sculpture is born from direct relationships with each piece of stone—what is an otherwise familiar everyday shape, a ball or wedge, becomes seductively uncanny through its conversation with the artist’s body and the body of the viewer. Nevine Mahmoud (b. 1988, London) received her BA from Goldsmiths, University of London and MFA from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Her work was recently on view in The Artist is Present, curated by Maurizio Cattelan, at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. This autumn The Hepworth Wakefield will present the first major UK retrospective of Polish artist Alina Szapocznikow (1926-1973), one of the most important, yet for many years, overlooked artists of the 20th century. The exhibition will bring together over 100 works spanning Szapocznikow’s career, including a selection of her drawings, which have rarely been publicly displayed. Working through one of the most tumultuous periods in history, Szapocznikow created a body of work that explored her own physicality against a backdrop of social and political upheaval. Her own life was most indelibly marked by her experiences of internment in the Pabianice and Łódz ghettos between 1940 and 1942, from which she was subsequently transferred, via Auschwitz, to the camps of Bergen- Belsen and Theresienstadt. Witnessing first-hand the horrors of the Holocaust, war and its physical impact, Szapocznikow’s fascination for the human form was galvanized. At the end of the war she committed to becoming an artist, focusing on sculpture. In 1946 she moved to Prague where she studied sculpture under Josef Wagner and then from 1948 to 1950 she studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The exhibition will trace a chronological path through Szapocznikow’s work, demonstrating how she consistently dismantled a classical ideal of sculpture.

Following a review of the literature in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 examines the production of works of art by the inmates of the camp. That art should have been produced at all in Auschwitz may conflict with our expectations, given the conditions of life within the camp. Nevertheless, art was as necessary in Auschwitz as it is elsewhere. The present account of the making of art under such difficult circumstances attempts to make a significant addition to the established narratives of Auschwitz. The post-war development of Auschwitz as a site-specific museum, established to commemorate the victims of the camp almost as soon as the site was liberated in 1945, permits analysis of techniques utilized by the museum authorities to display artefacts in order to narrate the story of Auschwitz.
