has set off your inner alarm clock: time to get out and get MS Awalkin’! It’s all about commitment—First things first: Decide how many times a week you’ll walk and for how long—start small and stick with it. Fifteen minutes, twice a week for the first month; half an hour, three or four days a week after that. Write up a short contract, sign it, and hang it somewhere prominent.

Get the right shoes—The right shoe fits! It should provide arch support, cushioning, and compensate for any stride problems you may have. If you’re buying walking shoes for the first time, test them out in the store. Make sure they’re flexible (can you bend and twist the shoe?), with a relatively flat, unflared heel. Walkers strike with their heels first. If MS has made your gait less steady, consider shoes with leather rather than rubber soles, which may cause you to trip. If you have difficulty finding shoes with leather soles, your shoe repair shop may be able to add one on to an exist- ing shoe, or sand down part of the sole.

TOLL FREE NUMBER 1 800 344 4867 35 VOLUNTEERING Why I Volunteer By Doug Jones am a motorcycle marshal on the BP MS 150 and this was my first year to do it. I work with a lady who rides every year on her bicycle for her father; he had MS. I never realized how big Ithe ride was until I was sitting at the starting line. Riding next to all the bikes, everyone was so polite, grateful and appreciative of every volunteer out there. The motorcycle marshals are the greatest. Jerry Irwin takes care of the training and leads all the motorcycles. I never thought it was that big of an Doug Jones event until now. I have lived in the Houston area BP MS 150 on a all my life and never thought twice about the MS motorcycle 150. I started to volunteer to help one person. I will continue to volunteer, because of all the people and I enjoy it!
