Spatial and vertical distributions, size-weight compositions, age, and diets of 10 rare or poorly known snailfish (Liparidae) from the Pacific off the southeastern Kamchatka and the northern Kuril Islands are described. The species include blacktip snailfish Careproctus zachirus, Alaska snailfish C. colletti, blacktail snailfish C. melanurus, proboscis snailfish C. simus, falcate snailfish C. cypselurus, big-disc snailfish Squaloliparis dentatus, longtip snailfish Elassodiscus obscurus, slender snailfish Paraliparis grandis, gloved snailfish Palmoliparis beckeri, and stout snailfish Allocareproctus jordani. These species inhabit a wide range of depths. Careproctus melanurus, C. cypselurus, E. obscurus, P. grandis, and C. colletti are the deepest; C. simus and S. dentatus occur mostly between 300 and 600 m; the three other species seldom occur at depths of 150–200 m. -

Accepted 23 August 2013 Three species of marine Amphipoda, Peramphithoe africana, Varohios serratus and Ceradocus isimangaliso, are described as new to science and an additional 13 species are recorded from South Africa for the first time. Twelve of these new records originate from collecting expeditions to Sodwana Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal, while one is an introduced species newly recorded from Simon’s Town Harbour. In addition, we collate all additions and revisions to the regional amphipod fauna that have taken place since the last major monographs of each group and produce a comprehensive, updated faunal list for the region. A total of 483 amphipod species are currently recognized from continental South Africa and its Exclusive Economic Zone . Of these, 35 are restricted to freshwater habitats, seven are terrestrial forms, and the remainder either marine or estuarine. The fauna includes 117 members of the suborder Corophiidea, 260 of the suborder Gammaridea, 105 of the suborder Hyperiidea and a single described representative of the suborder Ingolfiellidea. -

Abstract Ceina gerlachae sp. nov. is described. It differs in the habitus from the closely related Ceina carinata (Pirlot) in the rounded anterior process of pereonite 1, an upright carina on pleonite 1, a short process on pleonite 3 and a few characters on the maxillipeds. Key words: Crustacea, Amphipoda, Ceinidae, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, taxonomy, new species, Ceina gerlachae Introduction The genus Ceina previously comprised only four species, which were classified until 1972 as Phliantidae. From these they differ by laterally compressed rather than dorsoventrally depressed bodies and an unflexed urosome. J.L. Barnard 1972 erected the family Ceinidae. Only one species of Ceina has been previously recorded from Australia: Ceina wannape Barnard, 1972. Materials and methods The descriptions were generated from a DELTA database (Dallwitz 2005). All material is lodged in the Australian Museum, Sydney (AM). A set of colour plates, a list of standard abbreviations and detailed station data is available in Lowry & Myers (2009). Illustrations were made using the methods described in Coleman (2003, 2006). Abstract: Gammaridea and Corophiidea amphipod species from the Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan were listed for the first time; their faunas were compared on the basis of bibliographic information and material collected in one locality at Beagle Channel (Isla Becasses). The species Schraderia serraticauda and Heterophoxus trichosus (collected at Isla Becasses) were cited for the first time for the Magellan region; Schraderia is the first generic record for this region. A total of 127 species were reported for the Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan. Sixty-two species were shared between both passages (71.3 % similarity). The amphipod species represented 34 families and 83 genera. The similarity at genus level was 86.4 %, whereas 23 of the 34 families were present in both areas. For all species, 86 had bathymetric ranges above 100 m and only 12 species ranged below 200 m depth. In the Beagle Channel, only one species had a depth record greater than 150 m, whereas in the Straits of Magellan, 15 had such a record. -

On the origin and evolution of Antarctic Peracarida (Crustacea, Malacostraca)* ANGELIKA BRANDT Zoological Institute and Zoological Museum, Martin-Luther-King-Platz 3, D-20146 Hamburg, Germany Dedicated to Jürgen Sieg, who silently died in 1996. He inspired this research with his important account of the zoogeography of the Antarctic Tanaidacea. SUMMARY: The early separation of Gondwana and the subsequent isolation of Antarctica caused a long evolutionary his- tory of its fauna. Both, long environmental stability over millions of years and habitat heterogeneity, due to an abundance of sessile suspension feeders on the continental shelf, favoured evolutionary processes of “preadapted“ taxa, like for exam- ple the Peracarida. This taxon performs brood protection and this might be one of the most important reasons why it is very successful (i.e. abundant and diverse) in most terrestrial and aquatic environments, with some species even occupying deserts. The extinction of many decapod crustaceans in the Cenozoic might have allowed the Peracarida to find and use free ecological niches. Therefore the palaeogeographic, palaeoclimatologic, and palaeo-hydrographic changes since the Palaeocene (at least since about 60 Ma ago) and the evolutionary success of some peracarid taxa (e.g. Amphipoda, Isopo- da) led to the evolution of many endemic species in the Antarctic. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of the Antarctic Tanaidacea, Sieg (1988) demonstrated that the tanaid fauna of the Antarctic is mainly represented by phylogenetically younger taxa, and data from other crustacean taxa led Sieg (1988) to conclude that the recent Antarctic crustacean fauna must be comparatively young. -

Small to very small bones (ossicles) in one species each of the families Cyclopteridae and Liparidae (Cottiformes) of the Baltic Sea are described and for the first time illustrated with SEM images. These ossicles, mostly of dermal origin, include dermal platelets, scutes, tubercles, prickles and sensory line segments. This work was undertaken to reveal characteristics of the morphology, sculpture and ultrasculpture of these small ossicles that could be useful as additional features in taxonomy and systematics, in a manner similar to their use in fossil material. The scutes and tubercles of the cyclopterid Cyclopterus lumpus Linnaeus are built of small denticles, each having its own cavity viscerally. The thumbtack prickles of the liparid Liparis liparis (Linnaeus) have a tiny spinule on a porous basal plate; the small size of the prickles seems to be related to their occurrence in the exceptionally thin skin, to an adaptation for minimizing weight and/or metabolic cost and possibly to their evolution from isolated ctenii no longer attached to the scale plates of ctenoid scales. -

The collection of this new species is the deepest benthic capture of a vertebrate with corroborated depth data. Here, we describe P. swirei sp. nov. and discuss aspects of its morphology, biology, distribution, and phylogenetic relationships to other hadal liparids based on analysis of three mitochondrial genes. Pseudoliparis swirei sp. nov. is almost certainly en- demic to the Mariana Trench, as other hadal liparids appear isolated to a single trench/ trench system in the Kermadec, Macquarie, South Sandwich, South Orkney, Peru-Chile, Kurile-Kamchatka and Japan trenches. The discovery of another hadal liparid species, apparently abundant at depths where other fish species are few and only found in low numbers, pro- vides further evidence for the dominance of this family among the hadal fish fauna. -
