According to Cox, the softball field earned the application just five points, while the total needed to be at least 30. The proposed $441,200 budget includes around $18,000 for extra items to help secure the necessary points, including a picnic table (four points), a security light (six points), native landscaping (six points) and nature signage (six points). The project also includes renovations to the existing sports complex, namely re- striping the basketball or tennis courts, and parking improvements in the form of re-striping one of the parking lots. With the proposed grant expected to cover $200,000 of the total cost, the remaining $241,200 will be funded by the county. Cox said the county will not need the money until the 2022-23 fiscal year, although the county could put off the project another year if necessary. Additionally, Cox said the commission could modify the project later, as long as the total number of points remain the same and the county’s proposed funding level isn’t reduced. For example, if the county wished to add parking instead of re- striping existing parking areas, that could be done, because it would increase the total budget rather than reduce it. Commissioner Pam Feagle said she was in favor of the project thus far, adding that she liked the idea that the commission still had some flexibility in the future. How Carbur got its name Shown is the Locomotive Shop at Carbur. One of the cars has the Carpenter-O’Brien Lumber Co. name on it. Brooks-Scanlon bought out the holdings of Carpenter-O’Brien, which included 700,000 acres of virgin timber in 1917. Timber giants Carpenter-O’Brien and Burton-Swartz jointly operated a large logging camp called Carbur, located near present-day Salem on the Atlantic Coast Line. Historian Josh Goodman writes in his book, “Forest Capital, a History of Taylor County,” that when it came time to name the camp, the directors struggled to come up with something. “William Burton already had a town named for him in Louisiana, William O’Brien had just been honored with a steamboat named for him, and Samuel Carpenter would not let the group use his name. Mark L. Fleishel, general manager of Carpenter-O’Brien until 1919, hatched the idea of naming the town “Carbur” – a contraction of the names of the two companies, Carpenter-O’Brien and Burton-Swartz. Edward G. Swartz laid out Carbur with streets and avenues on a 640-acre plot. It had everything the workers needed, including a barber shop, school, hotel, two churches, a doctor’s office and even a dry cleaner.” (Photo courtesy of the Vera Myers Collection) A glance at the past Remember when...
