Introductory Note. 356 From the fact that the canons of the Council in Trullo are included in this volume of the Decrees and Canons of the Seven Ecumenical Councils it must not for an instant be supposed that it is intended thereby to affirm that these canons have any ecumenical authority, or that the council by which they were adopted can lay any claim to being ecumenical either in view of its constitution or of the subsequent treatment by the Church of its enactments. It is true that it claimed at the time an ecumenical character, and styled itself such in several of its canons, it is true that in the mind of the Emperor Justinian II., who summoned it, it was intended to have been ecumenical. It is true that the Greeks at first declared it to be a continuation of the Sixth Synod and that by this name they frequently denominate and quote its canons. But it is also true that the West was not really represented at it at all (as we shall see presently); that when the Emperor afterwards sent the canons to the Pope to receive his signature, he absolutely refused to have anything to do with them; and it is further true that they were never practically observed by the West at all, and that even in the East their authority was rather theoretical than real. -

Anke Wanger THE-733 1 Student Name: ANKE WANGER Student Country: ETHIOPIA Program: MTH Course Code or Name: THE-733 This paper uses [x] US or [ ] UK standards for spelling and punctuation The Biblical Canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church 1) Introduction The topic of Biblical canon formation is a wide one, and has received increased attention in the last few decades, as many ancient manuscripts have been discovered, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the question arose as to whether the composition of the current Biblical canon(s) should be re-evaluated based on these and other findings. Not that the question had actually been settled before, as can be observed from the various Church councils throughout the last two thousand years with their decisions, and the fact that different Christian denominations often have very different books included in their Biblical Canons. Even Churches who are in communion with each other disagree over the question of which books belong in the Holy Bible. One Church which occupies a unique position in this regard is the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church. UNIT 2C: TRADITION 57: The 7th Ecumenical Council & East-West Tensions This lecture considers seven related topics: (1) The theology of icons at the Seventh Ecumenical Council; (2) The decree of the Seventh Ecumenical Council; (3) The underlying theology of the Seventh Ecumenical Council; (4) Toward an integrated Orthodox Christian life; (5) Two 9th century theologians of note: St Photios the Great and St Symeon, the New Theologians; (6) Conclusion: The East and the West; and (7) An appendix on the Filioque. The focus is on understanding the place of icons in the Orthodox Church, as well as on the growing tensions between the East and the West. The Theology of Icons at the Seventh Ecumenical Council The art historian, Robin Cormack has posed the question: What are “the allowable functions of religious art”?1 In a sense, this was the question with which the Church struggled from the end of the seventh century until the end of the ninth century, seeking to understand the relationship of beauty to worship. The broad scope of the question is justified by the fact that during the Byzantine period, icons (from the Greek word, eikon, meaning image) meant not only frescos or paintings on wooden panels (as today), but many other forms of art, including “mosaics, carved ivory, illustrated manuscripts and even statues.”2,3 Certainly, Professor Cormack is correct that the Quinisext Council in 692 placed art “firmly on the 1Robin Cormack, Byzantine Art (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000), p. 86. "Pentarchy" (From the Greek Πενταρχία, Pentarchia from ̟Έντε
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentarchy "Pentarchy " (from the Greek Πενταρχία, Pentarchia from ̟έντε pente , "five", and ἄρχειν archein , "to rule") is a model historically championed in Eastern Christianity as a model of church relations and administration. In the model, the Christian church is governed by the heads (Patriarchs) of the five major episcopal sees of the Roman Empire: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem.[2] The idea came about because of the political and ecclesiastical prominence of these five sees, but the concept of their universal and exclusive authority was firmly tied to the administrative structure of the Roman Empire. The pentarchy was first tangibly expressed in the laws of Emperor Justinian I (527–565), particularly in Novella 131. The Quinisext Council of 692 gave it formal recognition and ranked the sees in order of preeminence. Especially following Quinisext, the pentarchy was at least philosophically accepted in Eastern Christianity, but generally not in the West, which rejected the Council, and the concept of the pentarchy. [3] The greater authority of these sees in relation to others was tied to their political and ecclesiastical prominence; all were located in important cities and regions of the Roman Empire and were important centers of the Christian Church. Rome, Alexandria and Antioch were prominent from the time of early Christianity, while Constantinople came to the fore upon becoming the imperial residence in the 4th century. Thereafter it was consistently ranked just after Rome. Jerusalem received a ceremonial place due to the city's importance in the early days of Christianity. Justinian and the Quinisext Council excluded from their pentarchical arrangement churches outside the Empire, such as the then-flourishing Church of the East in Sassanid Persia, which they saw as heretical. -

The Ecumenical Council is an assemblage of religious scenes and other symbols with personal significance to Dalí that he often repeated in his works. At the top center of the piece is the holy trinity: a youthful Father extends an arm to cover his face. Below and to the left of God is Jesus, holding a cross. The Holy Spirit floats to the right with [his] face obscured while a dove flies overhead. Between Jesus and the Holy Spirit is a scene from the Papal coronation. Dalí's wife Gala is shown kneeling under this area, holding a book and a cross. Dalí did not sign the canvas; instead he included a self-portrait in the lower left corner, looking out at the viewer.
