Samson by Deighton, Len - AbeBooks If you are interested in reading the Bernard Samson series then read Winter in its rightful place: fourth. The book is brilliant. It is the best book in the Samson saga although the masterful Spy Sinker comes close. Winter is very rewarding if you have read the preceding Samson stories. Certain influential characters from the trilogies have walk-on roles, giving you an idea of how they start out. The story begins at the turn of the 20th century with the birth of a second son to Harold Winter, a German businessman. Winter is the story of the two brothers, with the focus on the younger son Paul. You follow their experiences as they grow up, through the first World War, the inter-war years and the second World War. The eldest son, Peter, has an artistic streak and goes to work in the company firm. One of the special aspects of this story is how it depicts the rise of the Nazis and how the German people turned to their political point of view. It is very unsettling seeing how the treatment of Jews moved from persecution to extermination and how the Nazi leadership seized control, stamping out any sign Winter: The Tragic Story of a Berlin Family dissent. A strength of the book is how you can like the character of Paul and be sympathetic towards him yet you are increasingly appalled by his actions and attitudes. The Russian invasion of Germany was carried out without mercy. This is also highlighted in Field Grey by Philip Kerr. A word about the narration: the book is 1899-1945 by the same narrator as all the other Bernard Samson novels so you are listening to a voice you are 1899- 1945 familiar with. He does the job well, as professionally as ever. I could understand how some listeners might not be able to get over this stylistic hurdle, although I can see why the decision was made to present the narration in this way.     Berlin in English-language Fiction, 1989-2009: Spatial Representation and the Dynamics of Memory Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Paul O’Hanrahan May 2014 Berlin in English-language Fiction, 1989-2009: Spatial Representation and the Dynamics of Memory Paul O’Hanrahan, University of Liverpool Abstract This thesis sets out to define the field of Berlin English-language fiction since 1989 by identifying its distinctive forms of representation of space and memory. The post-Wall Berlin thriller can be characterised as a literary category based on genre combinations and a turn to the past. Distinct spatial iconographies emerge in thrillers representing Nazi Berlin, post-war „rubble Berlin‟ and the divided Cold War period; even the twenty-first-century city is related to 1920s cabarets. Applying Huyssen‟s observations on Berlin as a palimpsest of dynamic relations between past and present, I show that the Berlin thriller‟s concern with memory is responsive to contemporary uncertainties in the decades following the fall of the Wall. I proceed to compare British perspectives on divided Berlin in novels with thriller associations by Ian McEwan, John le Carré and James Lasdun. I posit that British involvement in the shared governance of divided Berlin during the Cold War era has fostered a special nostalgia for the city which has influenced the intimacy with which these authors represent the city. Through analysis of spatial relations with both parts of the divided city, I reveal unexpected British affinities with East Berlin, ambivalent memories of the Wall and regret at its fall.

There never was much there; just one small hut and some signs warning you about leaving the Western Sector. But the East German side had grown far more elaborate. Walls and fences, gates and barriers, endless white lines to mark out the traffic lanes. Most recently they'd built a huge walled compound where the tourist buses were searched and tapped, and scrutinized by gloomy men who pushed wheeled mirrors under every vehicle lest one of their fellow- countrymen was clinging there.

    LEN DEIGHTON. SS-GB (1978) Len Deighton was born in London in 1929. He worked as a railway clerk before doing his National Service in the RAF as a photographer attached to the Special Investigation Branch. After his discharge in 1949, he went to art school--first to the St Martin's School of Art, and then to the Royal College of Art on a scholarship. It was while working as a waiter in the evenings that he developed an interest in cookery--a subject he was later to make his own in an animated strip for the Observer and in two cookery books. He worked for a while as an illustrator in New York and as art director of an advertising agency in London. Deciding it was time to settle down, Deighton moved to the Dordogne where he started work on his first book, The Ipcress File. Published in 1962, the book was an immediate and spectacular success. Since then he has written twenty-one books of fiction and non-fiction-- including spy stories, and highly-researched war novels and histories--all of which have appeared to international acclaim.
