Spain [email protected] ABSTRACT The music for the animation cinema is closely linked with the characters’ movement and the narrative action. This paper presents the Temporary Semiotic Units (TSU’s) proposed by Delalande, as a multimodal tool for the music analysis of the actions in cartoons, following the tradition of the Mickey Mousing. For this, a profile with the applicability of the nineteen TSU’s was applied to the fourteen Pixar movies produced between 1995-2013. The results allow us to state the convenience of the use of the TSU’s for the music comprehension in these films, especially in regard to the subject matter and the characterization of the characters and as a support to the visual narrative of this genre. BIXBY INTRODUCTORY In “Hawthorne and His Wife” and “Memories of Hawthorne” both Julian Hawthorne and his sister, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, have given citations from the letters written by Nathaniel Hawthorne to Miss Sophia Peabody during their years of courtship. These excerpts were free and irregular, often, and evidently with specific intent, taken out of order and run together as if for the purpose of illustrating a point or emphasizing a particular phase of character. While the extracts were sufficiently numerous for the object desired, and while they gave an agreeable glimpse of an interesting period of Hawthorne’s life, they were necessarily too fragmentary, too lacking in continuity, to convey any adequate idea of the simplicity, beauty, humor and tenderness of the letters, even considered in the matter of a literary style. The original letters were acquired by Mr. William K. Bixby of St. Louis, and, at the urgent request of the Society of the Dofobs, of which he is a highly esteemed and honored member, turned over to the society with the understanding that they should be published for presentation to members only. It was specified also that great care should be exercised in going over the letters, that no apparent confidences should be violated and that all private and personal references, which might wound the feelings of the living or seem to speak ill of the dead, should be eliminated. -

Soundtrack It’s always a long way to home, even longer on this dreary night. I am alone except, I suppose, for the company of my music, the songs playing randomly from the playlist. The night glides by in perfect darkness, only the car’s headlights tethering me to this world. The melodies of the passing soundtrack conjure up images of broken hearts, urban wastelands, other roadways. Life is a Highway comes to an end, then a mere second of silence, to be replaced incongruously by I Wanna Hold Your Hand. The jangle of the music jolts me, and without thought I find myself !transported back in time.! I am riding on a bus, not a school bus, but a city bus. This is a big deal for me. I’ve learned the route from home to my new school. I recognize many of the faces of the passengers. I know the bus driver, who is always the same, who always gives me a smile when I climb up the stairs !on my ten year old legs. I sit half-way down the bus and I am feeling pretty grown up.! Oh, I’ll tell you something! I think you’ll understand! When I say that something! !I wanna hold your hand! This is the soundtrack of my ride, running through my head in an ever repeating loop as I gaze out the window at the city going by. I know, quite self-consciously, that it is important. I under- stand its significance, for it is the first rock ’n roll song I have adopted as my own. -
