  • AMERICAN MANHOOD in the CIVIL WAR ERA a Dissertation Submitted
UNMADE: AMERICAN MANHOOD IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Michael E. DeGruccio _________________________________ Gail Bederman, Director Graduate Program in History Notre Dame, Indiana July 2007 UNMADE: AMERICAN MANHOOD IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA Abstract by Michael E. DeGruccio This dissertation is ultimately a story about men trying to tell stories about themselves. The central character driving the narrative is a relatively obscure officer, George W. Cole, who gained modest fame in central New York for leading a regiment of black soldiers under the controversial General Benjamin Butler, and, later, for killing his attorney after returning home from the war. By weaving Cole into overlapping micro-narratives about violence between white officers and black troops, hidden war injuries, the personal struggles of fellow officers, the unbounded ambition of his highest commander, Benjamin Butler, and the melancholy life of his wife Mary Barto Cole, this dissertation fleshes out the essence of the emergent myth of self-made manhood and its relationship to the war era. It also provides connective tissue between the top-down war histories of generals and epic battles and the many social histories about the “common soldier” that have been written consciously to push the historiography away from military brass and Lincoln’s administration. Throughout this dissertation, mediating figures like Cole and those who surrounded him—all of lesser ranks like major, colonel, sergeant, or captain—hem together what has previously seemed like the disconnected experiences of the Union military leaders, and lowly privates in the field, especially African American troops.

  • Love Letters of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Volume 1
https://OneMoreLibrary.com Love Letters Nathaniel Hawthorne Volume I of II The Society of The Dofobs, Chicago, 1907 LOVE LETTERS OF NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE LOVE LETTERS OF NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE PRIVATELY PRINTED THE SOCIETY OF THE DOFOBS CHICAGO 1907 Copyright, 1907, by WILLIAM K. BIXBY INTRODUCTORY In “Hawthorne and His Wife” and “Memories of Hawthorne” both Julian Hawthorne and his sister, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, have given citations from the letters written by Nathaniel Hawthorne to Miss Sophia Peabody during their years of courtship. These excerpts were free and irregular, often, and evidently with specific intent, taken out of order and run together as if for the purpose of illustrating a point or emphasizing a particular phase of character. While the extracts were sufficiently numerous for the object desired, and while they gave an agreeable glimpse of an interesting period of Hawthorne’s life, they were necessarily too fragmentary, too lacking in continuity, to convey any adequate idea of the simplicity, beauty, humor and tenderness of the letters, even considered in the matter of a literary style. The original letters were acquired by Mr. William K. Bixby of St. Louis, and, at the urgent request of the Society of the Dofobs, of which he is a highly esteemed and honored member, turned over to the society with the understanding that they should be published for presentation to members only. It was specified also that great care should be exercised in going over the letters, that no apparent confidences should be violated and that all private and personal references, which might wound the feelings of the living or seem to speak ill of the dead, should be eliminated.

G Unglaublich, doch wahr!

  • 1 POPULAR MUSIC in the MERCER ERA, 1910-1970 Building Bridges
1 POPULAR MUSIC IN THE MERCER ERA, 1910-1970 Building Bridges: Hank Williams and the Hit Parade (Draft version submitted November 2010) By Dr. Steve Goodson University of West Georgia Carrollton, GA Hank Williams is widely regarded as the archetypal country music singer, songwriter, and performer. Phenomenally successful during his brief lifetime, he has become -- in the nearly six decades since his death -- something of a national cultural institution. He appeared on a U.S. postage stamp in 1993, he was the focus of a Smithsonian Institution symposium in 1999 – the first country artist to be so honored – and he was the subject of a documentary featured on the PBS American Masters series in 2004. When Mercury Records released a 10-CD compilation of his work – The Complete Hank Williams – the groundbreaking set received substantial reviews from a remarkable array of prestigious mainstream publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Village Voice, and the Times and the Guardian of London. Fans – most of them too young to remember Williams personally, continue to trek to his grave in his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama, often visiting as well as the city's Hank Williams museum and the nearby Williams statue. Artists continue to record his songs, not only in the country field, but in a variety of genres – Norah Jones and Van Morrison being recent examples. The enduring popularity of and ever-growing esteem – even reverence – for this star- crossed performer are remarkable given that his recording career lasted but six years, and that he did not live to see thirty years of age.

A total of 26 country recordings from the years 1957 to 1963. Next to famous artists like Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis we present lesser known recordings by Sonny Burgess, Warren Smith or Carl Mann. A total of eight previously unreleased masters! Well-known titles combined with several unreleased alternate versions and demos! Extensive liner notes by Hank Davis, carefully remastered for the best possible sound. Hank Williams died too soon to know about Sun Records, but the folks at Sun surely knew about him. This CD collects for the first time the response to Hank Williams by Sun Records artists and producers. We present issued records by major artists (Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis) – as well as lesser known Sun lights (Sonny Burgess, Warren Smith, Carl Mann) – along with originally unissued alternate takes, undubbed recordings and demos. It’s quite a range: male and female, black and white – they all took on Hank Williams. Sixteen different artists singing 16 different songs. Twenty-six tracks in total. The contrast is amazing. You’ll also hear some candid moments of Sam Phillips working as a producer in the studio.

  • Hank Williams. Retrieved From
Hank Williams By: Sarah Lewis, Baylee Gillanders, Samuel Carpenter, Thomas Serratore, Subhasree Sengupta Why Hank Williams? -One of the primary reasons why Hank Williams is so interesting is because we don't know much about him personally. -Williams left behind very little about his life, namely interview records, letters, and journal entries -It is apparent that Williams did not boast about his obvious success, however he is still regarded as one of the most influential and popular figures in music history Introduction HankH was born on September • He was one of the most popular Country music singers/ songwriters of his time. • He is the father of contemporary country music. • He was a superstar by the age of 25, but sadly he was dead by 29. Growing Up • Hank was born Hiram King Williams on September 17th, 1923 in Mount Olive, Alabama. • His mother gave him his first guitar when he was 8. • He had spina bifida which is why he turned to music for comfort • Hank was alone for much of his life, his mom was busy with work and his father was in a veteran's hospital. Musical Background • His musical education was provided by a local blues street singer, Rufus Payne, who was called Tee Tot. • Hank started performing in Alabama in his early teens. • He had his own band at the age of 14 called Hank Williams and his Drifting Cowboys- they had a regular spot on a local radio station Musical Career • Hank first signed with MGM label where he got his first hit, "Move it On Over" and had "Honk Tonkin", with a second billboard success.
