More so than some other series, Fairy Tail managed to create an endearing cast of characters with a humor that often betrays a darker history. Each of our heroes has a troubling past that motivates them and many of the arcs are introspective in Fairy Tail Ice Trail 1: 1 regard. The Ice Wizard; Gray Fullbuster is one of the first characters to get this treatment with his relationship with his deceased master being central to his development. The young wizard feels responsible for her death and this pervades throughout the volume. Indeed, there is a touch of PTSD to his experiences which demonstrate his fragility. Gray is a character who tries to put on a cool facade, fitting of his powers, but at times like his ice, it melts and the grief of a child emerges. Despite this, like the hero of an action-drama from the 80s, he constantly tries to do what is right, even when the best thing he could do for himself is to walk on. Gray is alone in the world and looking for a place in it, as the specter of his master looms over him. This part of his life is a pivotal to his development and something long-time fans will appreciate. The side-characters in this piece are nothing to write home about, a couple of Dark Guilds who serve as action fodder more than anything else. Fairy Tail has always been quite anthology-like when it comes to its side-characters. The introduction of new locations, guilds and characters has often been done as part of a process of world-building then it has anything Fairy Tail Ice Trail 1: 1. The art like the main series itself is quite good. Shirato sticks pretty much to Fairy Tail house-style established by Mashima. If Shirato has a distinctive style, its not apparent here. The eyes are the windows Fairy Tail Ice Trail 1: 1 the soul and the ability to convey subtle changes in emotion through them is the mark of a great artist. Throughout the volume there are subtle visual callbacks to characters that we know and love from the core Fairy Tail title which assist in helping to establish this as part of the canon. Its the good kind of fan-service, one that speaks to the history of the series and respects its audience. It is rare the prequels capture the spirit of the original, but Ice Trail succeeds where others have failed. It may serve as an interesting entry point for someone into the world of Fairy Tailbut it is clear that its intended audience are those already converted. Readers may be tempted to leave this spin-off out in the cold, but for those willing to invite it in, they will be pleasantly surprised.     DAVIS, ALLISON COOPER, Ph.D. Ponder and Believe: Interpretive Experiments in Victorian Literary Fantasies. (2009) Directed by Dr. Mary Ellis Gibson. 218 pp. This dissertation examines experimental Victorian fantasy novels in order to provide an alternate history for the Victorian era, one traditionally associated with the realist novel. Texts are discussed using fantasy theory, reader-response criticism, and rhetorical philosophy in order to demonstrate how literary belief influences the moral project of experimental Victorian novelists. First, a review of literature introduces the reader to the major ideas and problems of fantasy texts. Then, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” is used to exemplify the relationship between the fantastic author and her reader. The first few chapters, then, explain the theory of reading fantasy that will be examined in the rest of the project. The following three chapters discuss the experimental nature of Sara Coleridge’s Phantasmion: Prince of Palmland (1837); George MacDonald’s Phantastes (1858); and Jean Ingelow’s Mopsa, the Fairy (1869). The focus is on how these authors manipulated readers’ expectations for a fairy tale in order to use the trope of childlike wonder as a reading strategy that would encourage interpretive inquiry about the unity of the fantastic and the material. The primary thesis is that these authors use theories about literary belief (derived from Romantic influences) to structure their texts and to guide readers in how to read experimental fantasy work. The dissertation concludes with a chapter that explains how critics could understand further the intersection of fantasy and realism during the nineteenth century and could begin to view them as part of a unified Victorian tradition rather than as incommensurable modes.

The Introduction examined relevant aspects of Kosin­ ski’s life in an attempt to establish a relationship between his past experiences and the major themes of his fiction. It was discovered that the author’s exposure to diverse forms of authoritarian control constituted the source of his bias against any external force operating counter to the self’s freedom. The four novels comprising the Kosinski canon were analyzed in detail, especially as they were directed toward the quest for a viable self in a contemporary world threatening to submerge the individual consciousness. Each protagonist was shown struggling with some variant of social repression» the boy in The Painted Bird faced hostile peasants who, swayed by Nazist ideology, viewed him as a menace to their own safety» the narrator in Steps fled the socialist bloc because there he had no control of his destiny, nor was his being acknowledged as an entity separ­ ate from the masses» Chance, in Being There, was subjected to a more insidious totalitarianism--the television medium, whose false representation of reality effectively kneads the individual into an easily manipulated, mindless soul» and Jonathan Whalen, in The Devil Tree, fell victim to the Protestant Ethic, the demands of which left him unable to see himself as something other than an image occasioned by wealth and status.

In spite of the tendency of this matter-of-fact age to destroy what little of poetry, romance, and chivalry Nineteenth Century education has left to us, there lurks still in many countries, and especially in mountainous districts, a half credulity in the supernatural. Many legends of good and evil Fairies are still related by the country of Mona's Isle care to into people ; and those who inquire the habits and customs of the Manx cottagers will see and hear much that will reward their curiosity. It is not the mere excursionist, visiting the Island for a summer holiday and keeping on the beaten track of sightseers, who will ever learn or see anything of these customs, but he who branches off the high road into the recesses of the mountain districts.

Practicing Nostalgia: Time and Memory in Nabokov's Early Russian Fiction Abstract Nabokov's earliest Russian fiction er veals his lifelong preoccupation with time and his complex strategies for preserving heightened moments of experience. Dissatisfied with the brevity of involuntary (Proustian) recall, his émigré protagonists strive to inhabit their Russian past more fully through a painstaking process of aesthetic re-creation. Beginning with a handful of vivid recollections, the hero of Mary gradually fabricates a past that is more intensely real than the original. Nabokov's most mature characters, however, recognize the solipsistic danger and utility of living in a vanished mental paradise. Turning to the present, they find unexpected beauty in the arrangement of ordinary objects in Berlin.
