With third place overall in Phoenix Racing's Audi LMS R8 Marc Bronzel (Siek), Luca Ludwig (Roisdorf), Dennis Rostek (Porta Westfalica) and Markus Winkelhock (Berglen) presented the team with an unexpected surprise since this quartet did not even number among the favorites before the race started. The conservative and mechanically easy going driving style of the Phoenix squad, however, paid dividends: The Audi R8 LMS with start number 97 ran – apart from a small electronical problem during the opening stages – with the smallest technical problem. Of particular note was the performance of DTM driver Markus Winkelhock, who, after only landing a drive in the Phoenix team at the last moment, drove constantly fast lap times without any experience of the Nordschleife and in the closing stages convincingly defended the class lead.

This intrinsic Audi Sport philosophy rings particularly true in the case of the new R8, which is set to take to the road in early 2019 featuring a raft of changes, but also two important constants – retention of the much loved naturally aspirated V10 petrol engine, and suffusion with a sizeable dose of racing DNA achieved by sharing 50 per cent of components with the R8 LMS GT3 competition car revealed recently at the Paris Motor Show. Highlights of the latest R8 range include more power, torque and performance, including a first foray beyond the 200mph mark for several versions, and even greater handling precision thanks to suspension and steering revisions. The power of the naturally aspirated V10 engine at the heart of the R8 is now uprated to 570PS in the 'standard' R8 Coupé and Spyder V10 quattro.

The high-performance sedan features numerous innovations, delivering top performance on both road and track. The Audi RS 4 continues the tradition of quattro GmbH in bridging the gap between motorsport and everyday motoring. It is a car that combines emotional and functional perfection, meeting all the demands made by the driver of a high-performance car in general and an Audi in particular in today’s motoring world. At Audi, the “RS” abbreviation stands for unmatched performance ability, technological innovation, motorsports pedigree, and thrilling driving dynamics. At the heart of the RS 4 lies the high-revving 420-hp naturally-aspirated V8 engine featuring FSI direct injection technology, which was first proved out in the Le Mans-winning Audi R8 race car. The RS 4 features the latest generation of the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system with asymmetric/dynamic torque distribution. Under normal driving circumstances, 40 percent of the power is sent to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear. This new asymmetrical torque split quattro system is key to achieving the RS 4’s sporty driving dynamics, yet it ensures that Audi’s legendary all-weather traction and sure-footed handling ability remains.

With the electric powered Audi e-tron GT concept a four-door coupé is making its debut as a show car. The volume-production counterpart is set to follow in around two years. The next electric Audi is being launched, following in the footsteps of the Audi e-tron SUV and the Audi e-tron Sportback slated for 2019. This time with a flat-floor architecture that provides for exciting proportions and a low center of gravity. 434 kW (590 hp) ensure performance fit for a sports car. The torque is transferred to the wheels via the quattro permanent all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, as you would expect for such a dynamic Audi. The performance subsidiary Audi Sport GmbH is responsible for subsequently transforming the car into a volume-production model. Inspiration drawn from the wind tunnel: design and body Flat, wide and with a long wheelbase – those are the proportions of a classic Gran Turismo. And the Audi e-tron GT concept reflects these with its 4.96-meter (16.3 ft) length, 1.96-meter (6.4 ft) width and 1.38-meter (4.5 ft) height.
