Last Match UTRGV Wins Home Opener Sept. 21, 2019 at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team won its home opener over the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) 1-0 on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Junior Bryce Box scored his first goal of the season to provide all of the necessary offense in the 70th minute. Box now has five-career goals, three of which have been game-winners. Senior Angel Lopez notched his third assist of the season on the play. Senior Andy Rios (4-1-0) made one save for his second shutout of the season, the seventh of his career. UTRGV (4-1-0) was outshot by UCA (4-2-1) 12-9, but outshot UCA on goal 4-1. Marc Olsen (4-2-1) made three saves for UCA.

Previous Matches UTRGV Uses Three Second Half Goals to Defeat Marshall Sept. 17, 2019 at Hoops Family Field– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team used three second half goals to defeat Marshall University 3-2 on Tuesday at Hoops Family Field. UTRGV (3-1) trailed 1-0 after a Marshall goal by Vinicius Fernandes at 11:39 but senior Kyle Edwards didn’t waste much time to start the second half as he tied the match at 1-1 at 45:20. Edwards took the pass from senior Angel Lopez to score his third goal of the season. Junior William Akio gave UTRGV the lead for good as he took a pass from Lopez and scored his second goal of the season, which made it 2-1 at 69:53. Almost seven minutes later, Akio converted on a penalty kick at 76:38 for his second goal of the match to make it 3-1 UTRGV. Marshall’s Bleno Cruz added a goal in the final seconds to get within 3-2. Senior Andy Rios (3-1) made five saves in the match with Marshall’s Paulo Pita making three saves.

UTRGV Falls at No. 15 Central Florida Sept. 8, 2019 at UCF Soccer and Track Complex – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team scored a pair second half goals to force overtime before falling 3-2 to No. 15 University of Central Florida (UCF) on Sunday at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex. Trailing 2-0 in the second half, UTRGV (2-1) got a goal from senior Kyle Edwards in the 67th minute. Edwards picked up the loose ball on a corner kick and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. UTRGV put on the pressure late in the second half and in the 90th minute got a goal from sophomore Lukas Moser tying the match at 2-2. Moser took the pass from senior Arthur Rogers off of a corner kick and got it by a diving Yannik Oettl (2-1-1). UCF (2-1-1) got the game-winner from Yoni Sorokin, who converted on a penalty kick in the 107th minute. UCF jumped out to the early lead after getting a pair of goals in the opening minutes from Cal Jennings and Andres Hernandez in the third and fourth minutes of the match. UTRGV outshot UCF 14-11 but was outshot 6-7 on shots on goal.
