Interactive Multimedia Solutions Developed for the Opening of the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre Nikolay Borisov, Artem Smolin, Denis Stolyarov, Pavel Shcherbakov St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, Saint Petersburg State University Abstract. This paper focuses on teamwork by the National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (NRU ITMO) and the Aleksandrinsky Theatre in preparation of opening of the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theatre, also known as the Alexandrinsky Theatre, is the oldest national theatre in Rus- sia. Many famous Russian actors performed on the Alexandrinsky’s stage and many great directors. May 2013 marked the opening of the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The theatre complex comprises three buildings: the new stages building, a media center, and the building housing a center of theatre ed- ucation. Several plays shown simultaneously on multiple stages within the new complex’s buildings constituted the opening gala of the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky were the plays’ uni- fying theme. NRU ITMO employees developed several interactive theatre pro- ject solutions implemented for the opening of the Alexandrinsky Theatre’s New Stage. Keywords: Theatre, Multimedia, Information Technologies, NRU ITMO, SPbGU 1 Introduction The Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theatre, also known as the Alexandrinsky Theatre, is the oldest national theatre in Russia. It was founded in 1756 by the Senate’s decree. The history of the Alexandrinsky Theatre is closely linked to some of the most prominent exponents of Russian culture.

  • The Theatre of Death: the Uncanny in Mimesis Tadeusz Kantor, Aby Warburg, and an Iconography of the Actor; Or, Must One Die to Be Dead?
The Theatre of Death: The Uncanny in Mimesis Tadeusz Kantor, Aby Warburg, and an Iconography of the Actor; Or, must one die to be dead? Mischa Twitchin Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. 1 The Theatre of Death: the Uncanny in Mimesis (Abstract) The aim of this thesis is to explore an heuristic analogy as proposed in its very title: how does a concept of the “uncanny in mimesis” and of the “theatre of death” give content to each other – historically and theoretically – as distinct from the one providing either a description of, or even a metaphor for, the other? Thus, while the title for this concept of theatre derives from an eponymous manifesto of Tadeusz Kantor’s, the thesis does not aim to explain what the concept might mean in this historically specific instance only. Rather, it aims to develop a comparative analysis, through the question of mimesis, allowing for different theatre artists to be related within what will be proposed as a “minor” tradition of modernist art theatre (that “of death”). This comparative enquiry – into theatre practices conceived of in terms of the relation between abstraction and empathy, in which the “model” for the actor is seen in mannequins, puppets, or effigies – is developed through such questions as the following: What difference does it make to the concept of “theatre” when thought of in terms “of death”? What thought of mimesis do the dead admit of? How has this been figured, historically, in aesthetics? How does an art of theatre participate

CEU eTD Collection 1 ABSTRACT This thesis aims to research the creation of Ilkhom as an experimental theatre studio under Komsomol Youth League and Theatre Society in the late Brezhnev era in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbek SSR. The research focuses on the controversies of the aims and objectives of these two patronage organizations, which provided an experimental studio with a greater freedom in choice of repertoire and allowed to obtain the status of one of the first non-government theaters on the territory of former Soviet Union. The research is based on the reevaluation of late- Soviet/early post-Soviet period in Uzbekistan through the repertoire of Ilkhom as an independent theatre-studio. The sources used include articles about theatre from republican and all-union press. CEU eTD Collection 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am grateful to my research advisor, Professor Charles Shaw, for encouraging me to focus on Soviet theatre developments in Central Asia, as well as for his guidance and tremendous support throughout the research process.

  • Olympic Games on Theatre Stage
http://www.vesti.ru/doc.html?id=2811741 Daria Ganieva Artur Nurmukhametov Olympic Games on Theatre Stage At this time Poland hosts very unusual competition — Olympics on theatre stage. Russian troop (team) of the Alexandrinsky Theatre with its "Masquerade: Recollections of the Future" also takes part in the festival. There are no medals or losses (fails) in this Olympics in Polish Wroclaw. Even if the only Russian team, the Alexandrinsky Theatre, is already a national winner —"Masquerade: Recollections of the Future" won two "Golden masks", — Valery Fokin, the theatre’s artistic director makes the team keep practicing on foreign grounds round the clock. "Above all other things, you compete yourself, and you do your best to make the theatre go through it and pass the examination. Being abroad is always a test (assessment). The play is not as well-known as in Russia, so it is important to let the audience not only see, that the play is a melodrama, but to make them understand the tragic subject (sense). Even 20 years ago, everybody would understand Lermontov without subtitles, but now Russian language is not studied in Poland anymore. The leading theatre of the country cancelled the guest performance in Saint-Petersburg because of sanctions in 2014. But The Theatre Olympics went without "doping scandal". Alexander Chepurov, the associate artistic director of the Alexandrinsky Theatre notices: "6 truck trailers were needed for 1 play, 6 big trucks to carry theatrical scenery, teasers, curtains, furniture. The furniture is also reconstructed from Aleksandr Golovin’s sketches". "Masquerade" is going abroad for the first time.

  • 9TH THEATRE OLYMPICS Owing to the Global Development of The
9TH THEATRE OLYMPICS Owing to the global development of the system of information and communication, people everywhere can now feel and know closely about other than their own cultures. Compared with the olden times when people experienced everything on the spot and thus nurtured wisdom required for coexistence with other human beings, our world is permeated by something completely new, a change which enables us to know and understand things without actually ‘being there’. The change has been brought about by means of thorough exploitation of 'non-animal' energy (electricity, oil, nuclear power etc.) and is necessarily going to increase in the future. It is, however, dangerous to trust this ‘non-animal’ energy too much, which claims to connect people with each other with maximum speed. For it can lead to the forgetting or weakening of the rich possibilities of ‘animal’ energy stored up in the bodies of human individuals. Human cultures have bloomed and borne fruits through the refined uses of ‘animal’ energy. It is precisely in this way that performing arts, such as theatre, dance, and opera, have become a heritage of humankind irreplaceable by such media as television or film. The same applies to sports. Both performing arts and sports provide the ground for better understanding of and deeper caring for human beings by means of bringing people together to the very spot where they are taking place. No matter how enormous and necessary the system of communication by ‘non-animal’ energy may become for our actual life, it would be suicidal for humankind to forget or ignore the values embodied by performing arts and sports.
