His second year with the Tigers has been another year full of milestones and firsts as he's guided the Tigers to a 10-2 overall mark and a berth in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame. LSU's at-large berth in a BCS bowl is a first in school history and it also represents the third time this decade that the Tigers will play in the Sugar Bowl. In 2006, Miles became the first coach in LSU history to lead the Tigers to back-to-back 10-wins seasons and with 21 victories in his first 25 games as the school's head coach, his win total matches Bernie Moore for the most in school history over that span. He also became the first LSU coach since Jerry Stovall in 1982 to beat two top 10-ranked teams on the road in the same season. 24 2007 LSU FOOTBALL SUGAR BOWL GUIDE Head Coach INTRO NOTEBOOK COACHES TIGERS REVIEW THE SEASON HISTORY The Tigers were able to accomplish all of Stadium against North Texas was postponed. this despite having to face four top eight With the LSU campus serving as the recovery opponents on the road in 2006. • Early on the Morning After Leading LSU to the 2007 BCS National Championship, Coach Les Miles Spoke Passionately About the Unique Nature of the Fighting Tigers
Early on the morning after leading LSU to the 2007 BCS National Championship, coach Les Miles spoke passionately about the unique nature of the Fighting Tigers. "They understand what being pinned down means," said Miles, who saw his team on four occasions erase fourth-quarter deficits to earn victories during its 12-2 season. "They understand what it takes to come back and fight and overcome hurdles.” When top-ranked LSU lost its ’07 regular-season finale to Arkansas, it appeared the Tigers’ chances for a national title had been extinguished. Though disappointed, LSU quickly turned its attention to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, where the Tigers – playing without starting quarterback Matt Flynn and suffering from a rash of injuries – overcame a fourth-quarter Tennessee lead to post a 21-14 victory over the Vols. Ecstatic about winning LSU’s third conference title this decade, yet frustrated about apparently falling short of a BCS title game berth, the Tigers flew home to Baton Rouge expecting to receive a Sugar Bowl invitation. However, losses that evening by Missouri and West Virginia gave LSU – which ascended to No. 2 in the BCS rankings – the cherished opportunity to meet No. 1 Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game. Before a raucous crowd of 79,651 in the Louisiana Superdome, the Tigers overcame an early 10-0 Ohio State lead with a 31-0 barrage in a 24-minute stretch to storm past the Buckeyes, 38-24. LSU, which had won its first BCS title in 2003, became the first two-time national champion in the 10-season BCS era.

LSU FOOTBALL TRIBUTES Marquise Hill 1982-2007 LSU Football suffered a tragic loss on Memorial Day weekend when former Tiger defensive end Marquise Hill died in a watercraft accident on Lake Ponchartrain in New Orleans. Hill, a member of the NFL’s New England Patriots for the past three seasons, was a three- year (2001-03) letterman at LSU, and he was instrumental in the Tigers’ rise to prominence that culminated with the BCS national championship in 2003. An explosive player with a tremendous wingspan, Hill had five sacks in the final seven games of the ’03 season, including one in the national championship game victory over Oklahoma. Hill was the Patriots’ second-round draft choice in 2004, and he had developed into one of the most promising players in the organization. During the off-seasons, Hill came back to his hometown of New Orleans, where he helped his family members rebuild their homes after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. He also worked out frequently at LSU’s football complex, where he was greatly respected and admired by the current Tiger players. Marquise Hill was 24 years old.
