SILENCING THE COMPETITION
A battle of the unbeatens loomed in yesterday’s GI
Santa Anita Oaks between Eclipse Award winner
Halfbridled (Unbridled) and A.P. Adventure (A.P. Indy),
but it was the less accomplished Silent Sighs (Benchmark) who played spoiler,
Broman’s Friends Lake (A.P.
Indy) has anything to say about it. The attractive chestnut colt, dismissed in the wagering at odds of 35-1, always travelled comfortably beneath jockey Richard Migliore, swung out four wide for the drive and coming from just off the pace to deal the favorites their respective first career defeats. “This filly from the beginning was very special to me,” winning trainer Julio Canani said of the granddaughter of Alydar,

- In the Footsteps of Funny Cide...
- The Silence Is Deafening...
Similar to his New York-bred counterpart, Friends
Lake began his career in state-bred competition, finishing sixth in his July 25 debut at Saratoga before graduating by a head at the Spa Aug. 24. The 3 1/2-length winner of the Oct. 18 Sleepy Hollow S., a race also won by Funny Cide, the colt got a break and resurfaced with a distant third to Second of June in the GIII Holy Bull S. Jan. 17. But trainer John Kimmel was quick to excuse that effort. “In the Holy Bull, he was out of control,” he commented. “He ran people over in the paddock. So we worked with him many times in the paddock.”
The latest from the very successful breeding program of Mr. & Mrs. Marty Wygod, Silent Sighs was no secret in her Oct. 13 bow over seven furlongs, overcoming a slow start before reporting home a six-length debut winner versus fellow state-breds. Stretched out to two turns for her next effort, the dark bay filly set a strong pace and gave ground grudgingly before finishing second to the more seasoned House of Fortune in the California Cup Juvenile Fillies, but closed the year on a high note, defeating the talented Yearly Report by three lengths in the California Breeders’ Championship S. Dec. 27. Shipped cross country for her sophomore debut in the Sunshine Millions Oaks at Gulfstream Park Jan. 24, Silent Sighs was bumped at the start and lacked room in the stretch, but cleared both of those obstacles en route to a neck score.
A Friendlier Performance...
Better behaved in the walking ring this time, Friends
Lake was a bit reluctant to load, but rated kindly beneath Migliore early on, then was eased off the rail entering the backstretch as Frisky Spider (Frisk Me
Now) led from Value Plus with Read The Footnotes
back in third. Value Plus advanced to the front midway on the turn and was joined by the favorite to his inside, but by then, Migliore had his mount in gear and the duo closed willingly down the center of the track to win. The Cliff’s Edge (Gulch), well off the early pace, got a rail run into the stretch and finished with good energy to be third. The winner’s next start is, as yet, undetermined. “It’s so tough to keep coming back and holding good form,” Kimmel submitted. “If he can run a race like this off an eight-week layoff, we might not think about running him again until the Kentucky Derby.”

The Anatomy of an Upset...
The third choice in this salty field, Silent Sighs was content to chase from second as longshot Salty Ro- mance (Salt Lake) set solid fractions on the front end. Silent Sighs engaged and easily put away the pacesetter on the far turn, edged clear while drifting out a bit in upper stretch and reported home a 1 1/2-length winner, despite not switching leads late.

Favorites Down, But Far From Out...
The connections of Halfbridled offered no excuses in defeat and looked to the future. “I’ve never ridden her before and we were in a little tight around the first turn and she didn’t like it inside,” said Gary Stevens. “I never got a chance to get her out. She ran a gallant race.” The champ is likely to go next in the GI Ashland S. at Keeneland Apr. 3. Jockey Alex Solis said an equipment change is likely for A.P. Adventure. “I think we’re going to put blinkers on her. I think it’s going to really help because she was really wandering around.”
Favored Footnotes Falters...
Read The Footnotes’ effort in winning the GII Fountain of Youth S. Feb. 14 took its toll, according to his trainer. “At the eighth pole, it sort of hit him in the face,” Rick Violette commented. “His A race is supposed to win, We’d still like to make the [GI] Wood [Apr. 10], but we have to get him back and check him out.”

Prior to the race, Dynasty was quoted as low as 3-5 for the Apr. 3 G1 J & B Metropolitan H., but those odds are sure to lengthen after Yard-Arm came through on the inside to register the mild upset here. Dynasty, off at odds of 3-1 on, drifted out through the stretch and was just up for third. The winner of last year’s G1 South African Derby, Yard-Arm was making his first appearance since finishing second to Wolf Whistle in the G1 Summer Cup last Nov. 29.

The extra furlong was no obstacle. Madcap Escapade, who galloped to victory in a six-furlong maiden test Jan. 4 and in the Old Hat S. at the same distance Feb. 14, extended her winning streak to three with this facile score. The bay was sent off the heavy chalk trying graded company and seven-eighths of a mile for the first time, and gave her backers an anxious second or two as she hesitated slightly at the start. But the long tall filly was quickly into stride and looked to be cruising as she dragged new jockey Jerry Bailey through a quarter in :21.85 and a half in :44.61. She was reined in after opening a seven-length lead at the eighth pole and was still well clear of the talented La Reina at the wire. “She did hop out of the gate a little bit, but by the time she hit the ground the second time, she was in full flight,” Bailey said. “I didn’t even come close to dropping her head today.” Trainer Frank Brothers said Madcap Escapade could go next in the Apr. 3 GI Ashland S. or the Apr. 8 GII Stonerside Beaumont S., or could train up to the Apr. 30 GI Kentucky Oaks. “She’s the most talented filly I’ve ever trained,” he added. There was a minus show pool of $135,395.05
on the race. Click for the free brisnet.com catalogue- style pedigree or the brisnet.com chart. Click for the RaceReplays. com video replay.

In recording his 10th career victory from as many starts, Silent Witness equalled the winning streak set by Co-Tack in 1983. The winner of the G1 Hong Kong International Sprint in December, the Australian-bred got some time off, but returned to win the first leg of the Champion Sprint Series, the Feb. 1 G1 Bauhinia Sprint Trophy, by 2 3/4 lengths from Firebolt. Hammered down to 1-10 to keep the streak intact, the bay broke smartly and crossed over toward the stands’ rail, shook off a bid from Firebolt with a few flicks of the reins at the 400-meter mark and flew home to record the easy success. “Every horse has his breaking point, but we want to keep winning with him,” commented winning trainer Tony Cruz. “As long as we keep him to the set-weights races, he is going to remain hard to beat.” The winner is likely to surpass the record when he goes postward in the G1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize Apr. 25, but more distant shores could be on tap thereafter. “I’d like to keep him here for the Hong Kong public,” said winning owner Archie da Silva, “but, yes, it is possible we will race him overseas.” Under consideration are races at Royal Ascot in June and the G1 Sprinters’ S. in Japan in October.

Campaigned thus far exclusively in Northern California, Kilgowan staved off a pair of Southern California invaders to give his sire a second hopeful in the threeyear-old division. Well backed in his Oct. 18 debut over six furlongs at Bay Meadows, the grey colt successfully stretched out to two turns for his next, winning his maiden by two lengths over this surface Nov. 18. Put away for the year thereafter, the homebred made it two straight with a neck victory in the Golden Gate slop Jan. 9 and was most recently an even fourth behind O. K. Mikie (Michael’s Flyer) in the Feb. 8 Golden Gate Mile S. The third longest price in this field, Kilgowan broke well, but was allowed to linger towards the back of the pack. He advanced three deep on the final turn and was gaining in upper stretch, when he was bumped off stride by a drifting Skipaslew (Skip Away). He got his feet back under him and responded gamely to earn a narrow victory, while Capitano and Seattle Borders arrived home on even terms.

Wynn Dot Comma dug deep in the final panel and staved off the resurgent favorite Eurosilver, securing his second graded stakes score at Gulfstream Park. The chestnut established himself as a top Florida-bred as a juvenile, winning a pair of minor stakes and finishing second to Sir Oscar in the Nov. 15 Jack Price Juvenile S. at Calder in his season finale. Kicking off his threeyear-old campaign with a win in the Jan. 10 GIII Spectacular Bid S. at Gulfstream, he found himself boxed in during his next, the Feb. 14 GII Hutcheson S., and could do no better than fourth as the beaten favorite. Away in good order here under Edgar Prado, the blazefaced colt raced up to duel with GII Sanford S. winner Chapel Royal (Montbrook), put away that foe leaving the turn, opened a clear lead a furlong from home and just lasted as Eurosilver, who looked to be faltering in mid-stretch, came on again to get second. “After the last race, I showed [Prado] a tape of the horse and I asked him to ride the horse my way,” explained winning trainer Marty Wolfson. “He did that perfectly today.” Trainer Nick Zito said the runner-up would be pointed toward the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. at
