Long ago I’d decided that while it was a nice accolade to be crowned World Champion in the half W35, Newcastle Staffs AC (1:29:13 Michelle Buckle W40, 1:29:57 Lindsay Dixon W40, 1:41:34 Carey Dyer W40) Total marathon there were bigger fish out there and I had to 4:40:44 find the opportunity to race them. The European Masters Athletics Championships (EMACS) in Aarhus, Denmark was one of them. Europe hosts a large number of elite masters athletes, perhaps more than any other region.

The lead up to this race did not bode well. On vacation with friends in Boulder CO., three weeks out, I developed shin splints. A stint of timely altitude training quickly turned into a desperate attempt to shrug off an untimely injury. I managed to shake it and by race day was injury free. I was just short of that final heavy training load that was more to do with building confidence and sharpening than laying the basis for the race.

Aarhus proved to be one of the more difficult places to get to from New York. We flew New York to London, changed planes and touched down in Copenhagen. The next day we boarded an inter city train for the four hour journey to Denmark’s second city. While a pleasant enough city with great facilities, it begged me to question why EMACS opts for less accessible second cities: even British based athletes were unable to fly direct.

As the race approached and I tapered my shin splints improved markedly to the point that when doing fast strides on the eve of the race I could not remotely feel them. I have Heather North (Red Hammer Rehab) and Russ Stram (Runner Clinic NYC) to thank. That boosted Newcastle Staffs AC winning W35-44 team. my confidence enough to make me plan to run at 5:30 Photo left to right - Lindsay Dixon (2nd individual W40). There’s a clear lack of common sense in a ‘composed’ team . Running for a team, whether it be some masters runners. At their age they should by now Urban Athletics or Team GB, is another compelling reason know better. As a result when the gun went I had a horde to give your best. I ran most of it chasing the coattails of an M35 runner. In the closing mile I caught a rapidly slowing runner from the open race that the EMACS squatted on. As the stadium entered my sights I ran hard for the best possible time in case I was needed for a ‘composed’ team (if there were insufficient M45 finishers to make a ‘natural’ team older runners like me can be co-opted to make up the numbers). Six VAC members competed in VAC’s championships within the 10 mile race at RunThrough’s HM, 10M, 10k, 5k and One Mile extravaganza of races at the Olympic Park’s velopark. The course was ten laps of the compact one mile cycle circuit, with many twists and challenging undulations. The organisation was good, allowing for all the races, with nearly 500 runners in total, to take place simultaneously, albeit with different start times. There was scope for confusion but most VAC participants welcomed the company and the added interest.

There were 75 finishers in the 10M race. First home for VAC, 4th overall and 1st woman in the race, was Victoria Carter (W45) in a time of 68:13. Next was Peter Kennedy (M65) in 72:32, followed by Richard Solomons (M70) in 73:10. The Ron White Shield was won by Richard Solomons whose age- graded performance topped the table with an excellent score of 81.25%. Terry Casey (M75) supported the VAC team by running in the One Mile race, achieving a time of 10:38.

VAC’s results are below. 1 Richard Solomons 81.25% M70 73:10 (Highgate Harriers ) 2 Peter Kennedy 78.70% M65 72:32 (Lewes AC) 3 Victoria Carter 78.62% W45 68:13 (Thames Valley) 4 Peter Durrans 74.09% M65 76:17 (Veterans AC) 5 Jacqui Reid 72.25% W50 78:37 (Met Police) 6 Bill O'Connor 55.33% M70 1:50:02 (Queens Park Harriers) * Age grading based on actual age, using World Masters Athletics Road age-grading calculator 2015.

2018 / 2019 Events

EUROPEAN MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS MADRID - Spain 19 – 24 March 2018

Madrid awaits with enthusiasm to host the 12th edition of the European Indoor Masters Championships. This will be the third time Spain will host this competition after the previous ones celebrated with great success in San Sebastián in 2003 and 2013. Direct flights from UK airports and a choice of city centre 3 & 4* hotels are offered. We have secured an allotment in these hotels for BMAF athletes and these will be allocated on a “first come first served basis” – late booking requests may be offered alternative

accommodation in the event that these options are fully booked.

WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS MALAGA - Spain 05 – 16 September 2018

This will be the second time that Spain has hosted the Masters athletics showpiece after the edition held in San Sebastian in 2005. A great chance to combine some competitive athletics with a relaxing beach break on the Costa del Sol. With more than 4,000 athletes and 3,000 supporters from more than 80 countries expected to attend we are pleased to offer ‘FLEXIBLE’ travel arrangements to include numerous flight options from various UK departure airports, return airport transfers and city / beach hotels not far from the event venues. Additional nights can be added to extend your stay.

WORLD MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS TORUN – Poland 24 – 30 March 2019

The next WMACI event is being held at the new Hala-Sportowo- Widowiskowa sports complex in Poland. Torun is a large town rather than a city and the competition venue is on the outskirts of the town rather than the town centre but still relatively close to our hotel options. Torun previously hosted the European Masters Indoor Champs in 2015, so we are very familiar with the logistics of the town, having coordinated a successful travel programme for competing athletes to this event. A choice of 3 & 4* hotels will be offered, along with a choice of direct and indirect flight options.

In order to be the first to receive our full travel programmes for these events, please register below or email your interest to [email protected]
