(Tuesday, May 12, 2020) – Horses are back at Churchill Downs and they are ready to run. Saturday’s Opening Day program of the 2020 Spring Meet has an average field size of 11.3 horses for the action-packed 11-race program, which includes the return of champion Monomoy Girl in the featured fourth race, a conditioned allowance event at one-mile on the main track with a purse of $85,000. “It’s been a long time coming but we are thrilled for (Monomoy Girl) to return to the races,” trainer Brad Cox said. “She’s been working great down at Keeneland since late March and we’re looking forward to this first step back.” Owned by Michael Dubb, Monomoy Stables, The Elkstone Group and Bethlehem Stables, Monomoy Girl has been on the sidelines since September after dealing with a minor hamstring pull and a bout of colic. Monomoy Girl capped her brilliant 3-year-old campaign with victories in the 2018 Longines Kentucky Oaks (Grade I) and Breeders’ Cup Distaff (GI). She will be reunited with her regular pilot Florent Geroux for Saturday’s contest from post No. 2. Geroux has been aboard Monomoy Girl for her last three works at Keeneland including a swift five-furlong move in :59.40 last Saturday. First post Saturday is 1 p.m.

(Saturday, June 27, 2020) – Tom’s d’Etat delivered a brilliant performance in Saturday’s 39th running of the $500,000 Stephen Foster presented by Coca-Cola (Grade II) at Churchill Downs as the 7-year-old horse collected his fourth consecutive stakes win while defeating By My Standards by 4 ¼ lengths and clocking 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.30 – just .02 off Victory Gallop’s 1999 track and stakes record. Trained by Al Stall Jr. and owned by Gayle Benson’s G M B Racing and named for her late husband Tom Benson of New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans fame, Tom’s d’Etat sat just behind Pirate’s Punch, who led the field of eight older horses through fractions of :23.89 and :48.13. Midway around the far turn with three furlongs to run, jockey Miguel Mena asked Tom’s d’Etat to poke his head in front. Under a hand ride, Tom’s d’Etat drew off in the stretch and was utterly superior as By My Standards attempted to close ground. “I knew he was a lot of fun to ride him in the morning but didn’t realize how much fun he was in the afternoon,” said Mena, who was given an opportunity to ride Tom’s d’Etat when regular jockey Joel Rosario opted to ride champion Uni (GB) to a third- place finish in the $250,000 Just a Game (GI) at Belmont Park in New York.

Trained by Michael McCarthy, Ce Ce started 2020 with three consecutive victories including Grade 1 scores in the Beholder Mile at Santa Anita and the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park. Since then, she has two thirds followed by a fourth sprinting in the Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs in her most recent start. “It is not her fault,” McCarthy said. “She has had some excuses and there were some errors in judgment on my part. She is doing as well as she ever has.” John Velazquez, who has won the Distaff twice, has the mount Saturday. Dunbar Road – Grade 1 winner Dunbar Road galloped 1m of the Keeneland main track on Wednesday morning, per trainer Chad Brown.
