A very articulate autobiography which provides a lot of insight into the dedication and pure hard work of an elite athlete. A long rowing career with 3 Olympic golds culminates in the gold medal in London. I had been recommended this book by friends and can see why. Katherine Grainger's story was only really known to most as the summer of finally delivered that elusive gold Olympic medal at the 4th time of asking. The training and events are relentless and the inside joy of rowing and sport she has is nicely written. My favourite line however: "Sometimes life just puts good people in your path and your world is then greatly enhanced" How utterly true. Nice one Katherine!! Oct 24, Caroline rated it liked it. Felt like it had been hurriedly written - it probability was. The style and type of language is a little inconsistent through the book and could have used some deeper editorial. But, an enjoyable read It was interesting to learn what involved in the Olympic process and there were some nice sections that were very evocative of the training and intensity. It felt a little strained in places as the writer struggles to keep her private life of the pages. Oct 05, Paul Narloch rated it did not like it. I no longer have dreams. I have nightmares. Sep 01, Kayla rated it it was amazing. A truly inspirational story, written by a truly amazing lady, Katherine Grainger talks about her rowing career, which is inspirational to hear her perspective of the sport which we both share a love for. Aug 18, Julie rated it it was amazing Shelves: autobiography. An absolutely fascinating account of Katherine Grainger's rowing career, culminating in winning gold at London Sometimes in my experience sports biographies become a bit mind-numbing in their in-depth descriptions but this was very interesting and easy to read. Aug 06, MJ rated it it was amazing. I found this book insightful and inspirational, but most importantly, it's a fantastic read. You can sense the passion for what she does on every page. Jul 29, Piers rated it it was amazing. Brilliantly written and inspirational account. Katherine has delivered a Gold Medal writing performance at the first time of asking, and not a ghost in Katherine Grainger: Dreams Do Come True. Truly impressive. • Draw Press Release 2014
Women’s Eights Head of the River Race Press Release WEHoRR – 74th Race features Olympians, British and overseas internationals and new victory ceremony. The 74th running of the Women’s Eights Head has received a total of 291 entries. On Saturday 15th March at 3:30pm, the 74th Women’s Head will take place from Mortlake to Putney. With the wettest Winter the UK has experienced since records began, many rowers have had their training disrupted and head races have been cancelled across the country. In recent weeks, the stream conditions on the Tideway have also been affected by the large volume of water from upriver. Providing the weather is favourable on race day, the stream should make for some very quick times and potentially allow course records to be broken. In a new format for 2014, the prizegiving for the race will be held on the same day on Putney Embankment, which represents not just a first for the Women’s Head, but a first for all the major Tideway Heads. The field has a strong showing from current and former international rowers, with no fewer than 11 Olympic Medallists in the field, who between them share 7 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze medals from Olympic regattas stretching from Los Angeles in 1984 through to London 2012. The race for the Head Pennant is likely to come down to a duel between the two British Squad boats. These comprise a composite crew featuring the likes of Gold Medallists Katherine Copeland, Heather Stanning and Helen Glover, racing against Leander Club, with Olympic Silver Medallist Frances Houghton in the five seat, and stroked by 2013 World Champion Polly Swann.

A Moving Mesh Finite Element Method And Its Application To Population Dynamics Anna Watkins Department of Mathematics Reading University This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy June 2017 Declaration I confirm that this is my own work and the use of all material from other sources hasbeen properly and fully acknowledged. Anna Watkins June 2017 Acknowledgements There are many who deserve acknowledgement for their part in the completion of this thesis. The work here must be one of the longest running PhD theses of all time at 11 years, and has been completed in part-time bursts whenever life and time allowed. The beginning was as a new graduate in a rented flat, coding on my first laptop. During the course of the work, there have been two house moves, a wedding, a house renovation, a career as an athlete spanning two Olympic games, a start-up business, a new career in analytics, and two children. The work was done on planes, buses and commuter trains, at home with a baby in a sling, in any number of hotel rooms whilst on training camp and and even greater number of coffee shops, and even occasionally in the department at Reading. Therefore the support of those around me has been fundamental. I’m very grateful to Paul Thompson, my rowing coach, who believed that space needs to be made for things like this in an athletic career. This attitude meant that I have been able to cope with retirement from sport much better than I would have otherwise.

You sit on the start line, slide forwards and bury your blades. You look forwards, and suddenly it starts. The first couple of strokes feel slow, and heavy. Once the boat is moving, you scramble for speed, winding it up, and after a few, short pumps of the legs, you start to lengthen out. The boat moves faster and faster, hands, blades, legs, working to keep up. Then comes the call: stride. You press the strokes out, longer, harder, looser. You hit your rhythm, and settle in for the long haul. Soon, your legs and lungs will burn; for now, it feels like flying.

NEWSLETTER – DECEMBER 2017 News reviews 2017 World Rowing Award winners revealed The first World Rowing Indoor Championships announced Azou and Janssen head World Rowing’s top 10 list for 2017 A French man and a Dutch woman have taken the top spots in World Rowing’s Top 10 rowers for 2017. Jeremie Azou is the top male and Inge Janssen the top female in a list that includes new rowers who have taken over in the sport following a number of post- Olympic retirements. The indoor rowing appeal and British Rowing Rowers have long embraced – or rather endured – a close relationship to this most intense of exercise machines. But indoor rowing machines are no longer just for rowers cross training. New research from British Rowing reveals that on average there are three indoor rowing machines at every gym across Great Britain and concrete steps are being taken to increase that number. How South Africa is making their boats go faster The simple aim of a rowing coaching is to make boats go faster and South Africa’s national squad programme is certainly picking up speed. At the Olympic level, the first South African boat to compete was the men’s eight in Barcelona in 1992. Twelve years later in Athens, South Africa won its first medal, bronze in the men’s pair. London 2012 saw South Africa win its first gold, in the men’s lightweight four. This success was built on in Rio, with five boats qualifying, all making finals and the men’s pair winning silver. World Rowing’s 2017 Coaches Conference on 7-8 December in London, focused on the theme of using technology and data to make boats go faster.
