7 DAY & 7 NIGHT GREAT BARRIER REEF ITINERARY PORT DOUGLAS | GREAT BARRIER REEF | COOKTOWN | LIZARD ISLAND PORT DOUGLAS Port Douglas is a town on the Coral Sea in the tropical far north of Queensland, Australia. Located a scenic 50 minute drive north of Cairns International airport, It's known for its luxury beach resorts and as a base for visits to both the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest reef system, and Daintree National Park, home to biodiverse rainforest. In town, Macrossan Street is lined with boutique shops and restaurants. Curving south is popular Four Mile Beach. THE RIBBON REEFS - GREAT BARRIER REEF - Characteristically no wider than 450m, the Ribbon Reefs are part of the Great Barrier Reef Marina Park and are covered in colorful corals that attract a plethora of reef life big and small, with sandy gullies separating them, themselves containing interesting critters. The Ribbons reef host several of Australia’s most spectacular dive sites, as well as arguably the most prolific Black Marlin fishing in the world at certain times of year -with general fishing topping the list also. LIZARD ISLAND Lizard Island hosts Australia’s northernmost island resort. It is located 150 miles north of Cairns and 57 miles north east off the coast from Cooktown. Lizard Island is an absolute tropical paradise, a haven of isolation, gratification and relaxation. Accessible by boat and small aircraft, this tropical haven is a bucket list destination. Prominent dives spots on the Ribbon Reefs are generally quite shallow, with bommies coming up to as high as 5 metres below the surface from a sandy bottom that is between 15-20 metres below the surface. -

Keywords: tropical marine education, environmental and marine experiential education, environmental awareness and attitudes, ecological agency, coral reef education Abstract: This paper reports on a PhD research project investigating marine education in coral reef environments along the Queensland coast. The study explored relationships between awareness, attitudes and ecological skills of high school students who were trained in coral reef ecology and monitoring in offshore sites along the Great Barrier Reef in 2002 and 2003. The research investigated the question of whether experiential marine education can change the reported environmental knowledge, attitudes and ecological agency of student participants. Some key data outcomes are presented and implications for effective marine education strategies discussed. Introduction Educational programs that focus on humans and their relationship to coral reefs are becoming necessary, as reef structures along the Queensland coast come under mounting ecological pressure (GBRMPA, 2003; Hughes et al., 2003; Talbot, 1995). Marine education has been defined by Roseanne Fortner (1991) as that part of the total educational process that enables people to develop sensitivity to and a general understanding of the role of the seas in human affairs and the impact of society on the marine and aquatic environments. Improving pedagogical techniques concerning aquatic environments is valuable since continuing intensification of human activity near coastline areas adversely affects marine and coastal ecosystems worldwide (NOAA, 1998). -

JASON H. MIDDLETON SUMMARY A scientific discussion meeting was held in July 1982 to generate a statement concerning the physical oceanography of the Great Barrier Reef region. The statement was to be framed by answering the questions below: .. (a) What is the present state of knowledge? (b) What appear to be the most important unanswered questions? (c) With regard to (a) and (b), what methods would be‘mogt effective in answering the questions posed in (b)? (d) What routine monitoring measurements would appear to be of most scientific value in increasing our knowledge of the region? This report summarises the discussions of the meeting. For the first time in 12 years of tracking the health of the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, the overall condition of this vital ecosystem has deteriorated. The Reef Health Index (RHI), which synthesizes ecological data into a “Dow Jones” style index, decreased from 2.8 in 2016 to 2.5 in 2018. Despite the recent decline, reef health still shows improvement compared to 2006 when the HRI monitoring efforts began. A similar report released last summer for Australia’s Great Barrier Reef also marked a dramatic reduction in reef condition, signaling a worrisome outlook for two of the world’s most important reef systems in different hemispheres of the globe. ”Over the past decade we have documented a slow but positive recovery of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System,” according to Dr. Melanie McField, Director of the Healthy Reefs Initiative and marine scientist with the Smithsonian Institution, “but this recent decline highlights the need to step up local actions to improve water quality and increase fish populations and accelerate international commitments to reduce carbon emissions in order to halt climate change impacts on reefs.” The report is based on a new study of 286 coral reef sites along 1000 km of the Caribbean coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. -

Barker Thesis submittedfor the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science Environment Department University of York August 2003 Abstract Coral reefsprovide many servicesand are a valuableresource, particularly for tourism, yet they are suffering significant degradationand pollution worldwide. To managereef tourism effectively a greaterunderstanding is neededof reef ecological processesand the impactsthat tourist activities haveon them. This study explores the impact of divers and snorkelerson the reefs of St. Lucia, West Indies, and how the reef environmentaffects tourists' perceptionsand experiencesof them. Observationsof divers and snorkelersrevealed that their impact on the reefs followed certainpatterns and could be predictedfrom individuals', site and dive characteristics.Camera use, night diving and shorediving were correlatedwith higher levels of diver damage.Briefings by dive leadersalone did not reducetourist contactswith the reef but interventiondid. Interviewswith tourists revealedthat many choseto visit St. Lucia becauseof its marineprotected area. Certain site attributes,especially marine life, affectedtourists' experiencesand overall enjoyment of reefs.Tourists were not alwaysable to correctly ascertainabundance of marine life or sedimentpollution but they were sensitiveto, and disliked seeingdamaged coral, poor underwatervisibility, garbageand other tourists damagingthe reef. Hol Chan: Demonstrating That Marine Reserves Can Be Remarkably Effective
Hol Chan: demonstrating that marine reserves can be remarkably effective The Hol Chan Marine Reserve lies oil Ambergris Cay, in Belize. Covering 2.6 km2. the reserve has been protected from all forms of fishing since 1987. Although small, Hol Chan contains a higher biomass of fishes per unit area of reef than we have seen anywhere else in the world. Enormous schools of grunts and snappers, so dense they almost obscure the reef. mingle with huge roving black groupers (Mycterot)era bonaci) and grey snappers (LuOanus griseus). The standing stock of commercially important species reaches 340 g/m: in the centre of the reserve, while at the periphery it averages 77 g/m 2, about double that in adjacent fished areas (Pohmin and Roberts 1993). This compares with values for lightly fished reel's of 27 g/m: for the Caribbean island of Saba. 65 g/m2 for the northern Red Sea (data collected using the same observer and method), and 24 g/m 2 at French Frigate Shoals (Polovina 1984), 49 g/m 2 for Bermuda (Bardach 1959), and 65 g/m 2 for Hawaii (Grigg 1994; data collected using different methods). The reserve also contained seven more species of commercial fishes than areas subject to fishing. The presence of large fishes in the reserve is particularly important to replenishment because of their disproportionately large contribution to egg production. In addition to boosting reproductive output, the reserve may also play an important role in protection of species which are vulnerable to fishing. Review of the Benefits of No-Take Zones
1 Preface This report was commissioned by the Wildlife Conservation Society to support a three-year project aimed at expanding the area of no-take, or replenishment, zones to at least 10% of the territorial sea of Belize by the end of 2015. It is clear from ongoing efforts to expand Belize’s no-take zones that securing support for additional fishery closures requires demonstrating to fishers and other stakeholders that such closures offer clear and specific benefits to fisheries – and to fishers. Thus, an important component of the national expansion project has been to prepare a synthesis report of the performance of no-take zones, in Belize and elsewhere, in replenishing fisheries and conserving biodiversity, with the aim of providing positive examples, elucidating the factors contributing to positive results, and developing scientific arguments and data that can be used to generate and sustain stakeholder support for no-take expansion. To this end, Dr. Craig Dahlgren, a recognized expert in marine protected areas and fisheries management, with broad experience in the Caribbean, including Belize, was contracted to prepare this synthesis report. The project involved an in-depth literature review of no-take areas and a visit to Belize to conduct consultations with staff of the Belize Fisheries Department, marine reserve managers, and fishermen, collect information and national data, and identify local examples of benefits of no-take areas. In November 2013, Dr. Dahlgren presented his preliminary results to the Replenishment Zone Project Steering Committee, and he subsequently incorporated feedback received from Steering Committee members and WCS staff in this final report. -

Resident Director’s Report - 2014 Dr. Peter Bushnell and Dr. Ann Grens Department of Biological Sciences Indiana University South Bend Program: Tropical Marine Biology Field Study in Belize; BIOL-L 342 (3 credits) San Pedro, Belize; June 2 -June 11, 2014 Success in meeting the program’s mission: Marine biology covers a range of complex environments and a diverse assortment of plants and animals adapted to them. While it is possible to discuss these environments in a lecture course, there is really no substitute for experiencing them in person. The aim of this course is to introduce participants to a variety of habitats, including coral reefs, grass beds, soft and hard bottom communities, intertidal zones, sandy beaches, mangrove swamps and estuaries. A student who completes this course will have observed and learned about the structure and function of a variety of tropical marine ecosystems and their inhabitants, as well as experienced Belize culture firsthand. Selection Process: Class participants are primarily selected from Biology majors at IU South Bend who have met the prerequisite course work (Introduction to Biological Sciences I and II (L101/L102), Principles of Chemistry I and II (C105/C106), and Marine Biology (L304) by passing all courses with a C or better. Participants must also pass a swimming test. Participants: 12 2 instructors: P. Bushnell and A. Grens (IUSB Biological Sciences) 2 faculty participants (C. Sofhauser, S.
