INVENTORY OF THE RECORDS OF THE BROTHERHOOD COMMISSION, SBC AR. 660 SOUTHERN BAPTIST HISTORICAL LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES 1989 2 BROTHERHOOD COMMISSION RECORDS AR. 660 Summary Main Entry: Southern Baptist Convention. Brotherhood Commission Records Date Span: 1935 - 1984 Abstract: The records of the Brotherhood Commission are divided into seven series: Minutes; Executive Secretary/President files (files of four executive directors – Lawson Cooke, George Schroder, Glendon McCullough, and James Smith); National Conference for Baptist Men (1978); Photographs; Publications and Promotional Material; Recordings; and Scrapbooks. The National Conference for Baptist Men in 1978 series includes substantial material, but the majority of the files cover the tenure of executive director, George Schroder. Also included in the files of Glendon McCullough is correspondence with President Jimmy Carter, a close friend of McCullough. Size: 33 linear ft. (27 record center boxes) Collection #: AR 660 Historical Sketch Brotherhood work began as a national organization in 1907 in Richmond, Virginia, as the Laymen's Missionary Movement. Leaders were Joshua Levering of Baltimore, Maryland and Governor W.J. Northern of Atlanta, Georgia. Offices were first opened in Baltimore, but the organization moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1914 and to Knoxville a couple of years later. The name was changed in 1926 to Baptist Brotherhood of the South. In 1938, its headquarters moved to Memphis, Tennessee, and, in 1950, it assumed its final name, the Brotherhood Commission. Upon recommendation of a special study committee in 1954, the Southern Baptist Convention, meeting in St. Louis, voted to transfer Royal Ambassadors from Woman's Missionary Union to the Brotherhood Commission. In 1965, Southern Baptists assigned the Commission the responsibility of developing and sustaining a mission’s education program for all boys, ages 9 to17, and all men. Five years later, the Brotherhood Commission was asked to begin providing guidance for churches wanting to involve boys in grades 1-3 in missions. In the 1970s, the Commission took over the responsibility for planning and conducting World Missions Conferences, Lay Renewal, and Disaster Relief. Five men have served as chief executive officer of the organization. J.T. Henderson held the office from 1907 to 1938. Lawson H. Cooke assumed leadership from 1938 to 1951. He was succeeded by George W. Schroder who served from 1951 to 1971. Glendon McCullough took over the lead role in 1971 and continued until his death in 1978. James H. Smith, the last chief executive, who carried the title of president, took over his duties in 1979. 3 The purpose of the Brotherhood Commission was to support the Southern Baptist Convention in its task of bringing men to God through Jesus Christ. This was done through developing and projecting programs of work that involved men and boys in missions. Materials and periodicals were produced to help the enlisted men and boys in the mission tasks of their churches. The materials helped to build concern for the spreading of the Christian message to the farthest reaches of the world. The Brotherhood Commission directed the mission education program for men, young men, and boys, known as Baptist Men and Royal Ambassadors. World Mission Conferences, Lay Renewal, and Disaster Relief are other programs administered by the Commission. In 1997, the restructuring of the Southern Baptist Convention merged the programs of the Brotherhood Commission into the North American Mission Board, and the Brotherhood Commission was dissolved. Scope and Content Note The records of the Brotherhood Commission (33 linear ft.) have been divided into seven series. The majority of the files cover the administration of George Schroder. There are no files related to the first executive of the Brotherhood Commission, J. I. Henderson, and very little concerning his successor, Lawson Cooke. Most of the collection consists of subject files of the executive office and the minutes of the Commission and its committees. The collection includes a large amount (more than 1 lin. ft.) of information on the National Conference for Baptist Men in Atlanta in 1978. The collection includes a significant number of photographs of individuals related to the work of the Commission. Included are staff members, commissioners, and other individuals involved in the activities of the agency. Group and subject photographs are also included in the collection. A scattered sampling of publications and promotional material has been added to the collection from other sources. A few sound recordings of Commission meetings and the National Conference of Men in 1978 are a part of the collection. The collection includes several scrapbooks (mostly clippings) related to the Brotherhood Commission. Of special note is the photographic album maintained by Lawson Cooke. The album includes about 275 photographs of churches where Cooke spoke. The photographs cover most states in the Southern Baptist Convention at that time. Arrangement The collection is divided into seven series: Minutes; Executive Secretary/President files; National Conference for Baptist Men (1978); Photographs; Publications and Promotional Material; Recordings; and Scrapbooks. The folders are listed in alphabetical order within each series.
