2011 World Jamboree in Sweden Continued

To commemorate the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden, a California redwood seedling was given by IFSR to the Scouts of the area to plant. Some day when Scouts or Rotarians returns to that area they will be able to stand in the shade of that California Redwood. Here are pictures of local Scouters including IFSR new member Bjorn Bonnestig, planting a tree near the Scout hut in Hassleholm, Sweden! It will be protected from scavenging rabbits with a wire mesh screen until it bursts forth, strong enough to take care of itself!

Fire at Slave Lake City, Alberta, Canada By Ross Hallett

In May, 2011 a wildfire destroyed about one fourth of the homes and the library in this small city 250 Km north of Edmonton. Slave Lake city is located on the southeast corner of Slave Lake, a good size body of water. The seventeen member Slave Lake Rotary Club are leaders in the community. They are playing a large role in the recovery process from the catastrophe. This club sponsors the local Boy Scout Group. An additional effect of the fire was the destruction of the Boy Scout meeting hall and all of their supplies. Two of the leaders lost their homes and contents in the fire. The leaders are still trying to find a place to live and restore their belongings. A contingent of Edmonton Rotarians (14) travelled to Slave Lake Aug 8 & 9 to assist in the unpacking and sorting of the numerous donations and to attend the Slave Lake Rotary Club weekly meeting. Part of the cash dona- tions received will be used to rebuild the youth centre where the Scouts met. The Club is concerned that the leaders will not be available to run the Scouting programs. Repairing and re-organizing the community is taking a large com- mitment of everybody. It is estimated that it will take 2 or 3 years to rebuild. The Scouting representative from the Slave Lake Rotary Club was pleased with the concept of IFSR and will be sending in a membership application.
