First of all, my deepest and sincerest thanks go to Andrew Riggsby, whose support has had a profound effect not only on this dissertation, but on my scholarly interests, my approach to research, and my enthusiasm for this field. His patience and thoughtful advice were deeply instrumental to the success of this project, and one of the great joys of my time in this program was the opportunity to work closely with him for the last three years. He has truly served as a role model for how I hope to engage with my own students in the future. I would also like to thank Karl Galinsky and Ayelet Haimson Lushkov, whose mentorship throughout my time in Austin was enormously influential. I spent many hours in their offices discussing my research ideas, as well as my career path in the future as a member of the professoriate. -
Time Bettering Days
1 + 1 Zs EUGEN ROSENSTOCK-HUESSY TIME BETTERING DAYS Paper Read in the Tucker Fellowship at the Spring Equinox of 1954) Time Bettering Days. the learned say that this phrase is found in the English language once, and once only: in Shakespeare's 82nd Sonnet. And the unlearned say that it is a contradiction in terms. How can time which is the totality and the compound of all days be improved by days which are better than the rest? This really is pulling time up by its own bootstraps. It can't be done. Time bettering days are nonsense. Having published my first study on the calendar in 1910 and my last in 1952, I am taking this highly unexpected summons to replace our friend Booth, the impressive reader of Shakespeare, as my opportunity to reorganize my calendaric and time studies around William Shakespeare. Shakespeare's and my own thesis is that mankind in the Christian era lives in a pluralism of intersecting and overlapping calendars; that this is the distinction of the Christian era as against all others, Jewish»' Chinese, Roman, Aztec and all the rest. Our era is the era of pluralism in timing, and this is officially its character. Jesus said to the man whom he saw working on a Sabbath: "Man, il^you don't know what you are doing, you are cur sed. How ever, if you do know why you are working you are blessed", and this word of the Lord of the Eons of Eons has become fiesh in the pluralism of every Western Man's own eons. -

Mergers and acquisitions activity in the energy industry during 2017 was higher than at any time in the last decade. Deal volume for transactions in the United States was over $213 billion, well above the $141 billion recorded in 2016 and above the previous high-water mark of $201 billion set in 2015.1 Initial uncertainty about the potential for tax reform was overcome by optimism about the economy generally, which kept stock valuations high and interest rates lower than at least some had thought they might be at this point in the business cycle. Utility stock valuations did decline somewhat toward year end, but it remains to be seen what effect lower valuations may have on the level of transaction activity in 2018. As usual, more than half the activity involved pipelines, midstream companies and MLPs, with $118 billion of announced transactions, up from about $76 billion the year before. -

The New Global History Toward a Narrative for Pangaea Two
EWE (previously EuS) 14(2003)1 Main Article / Hauptartikel 75 The New Global History Toward a Narrative for Pangaea Two Wolf Schäfer Summary: The author approaches contemporary history from a position that defines the expression “truly global” as earth-centered. On this ground, two kinds of global history can be distinguished: the non-linear geophysical history of first nature, which is alternately uniting and dividing the world-continent (called Pangaea One), and the revolutionary technoscientific history of second nature, which is beginning to defragment the earth with things like the World Wide Web. The new Global History explores contemporary global history in general and the emerging civilizational unity (called Pangaea Two) in particular. The new historiographical approach is introduced via a critical discussion of Globality, Globalization, Periodization, World History, and Methodology. Overview ((3)) In this article, I shall be following an alternative tack to- ward global history. I think that the designation “new global history” is warranted by the novelty of a human-made global ((1)) Titles of the form “The New –” invite the tested response: history. -
Comrade Britney and the Critical Potential of Marxist Memeing
41 Comrade Britney and the Critical Potential of Marxist Memeing Contemporary Matters Journal – Issue #3 42 Comrade Britney and the Critical Potential of Marxist Memeing by Sophie Publig “It’s comrade Britney, bitch” is written in pink pseudo-cyrillic letters over a red background.¹ In the center of the image, we see the famous counterfeits that form the classic genealogy of Marxist thinkers: Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Britney Spears. Wait, Britney Spears, US-American pop hit machine since the late 1990s? If she never struck you as a thinker of the proletariat, perhaps it’s time to go through her lyrical œuvre that has not been short of making labor a subject of discussion. Take, for example, the 2013 electro pop classic “Work B*tch”: You want a hot body? You want a Bugatti? You want a Maserati? You better work bitch You want a Lamborghini? Sippin’ martinis? Look hot in a bikini? You better work bitch You wanna live fancy? Live in a big mansion? On the Way to the Fluvial Anthroposphere—Current Limitations and Perspectives of Multidisciplinary Research

In this review, we focus on the environmental conditions of preindustrial floodplains in Central Europe and the fluvial societies that operated there. Due to their high land-use capacity and the simultaneous necessity of land reclamation and risk minimisation, societies have radically restructured the Central European floodplains. According to the current scientific consensus, up to 95% of Central European floodplains have been extensively restructured or destroyed. There- fore, question arises as to whether or when it is justified to understand Central European floodplains as a ‘Fluvial Anthroposphere’. The case studies available to date show that human-induced impacts on floodplain morphologies and environments and the formation of specific fluvial societies reveal fundamental changes in the medieval and preindustrial modern periods. We aim to contribute to Citation: Werther, L.; Mehler, N.; disentangling the questions of when and why humans became a significant controlling factor in Schenk, G.J.; Zielhofer, C. -
Latin Derivatives Dictionary
Dedication: 3/15/05 I dedicate this collection to my friends Orville and Evelyn Brynelson and my parents George and Marion Greenwald. I especially thank James Steckel, Barbara Zbikowski, Gustavo Betancourt, and Joshua Ellis, colleagues and computer experts extraordinaire, for their invaluable assistance. Kathy Hart, MUHS librarian, was most helpful in suggesting sources. I further thank Gaylan DuBose, Ed Long, Hugh Himwich, Susan Schearer, Gardy Warren, and Kaye Warren for their encouragement and advice. My former students and now Classics professors Daniel Curley and Anthony Hollingsworth also deserve mention for their advice, assistance, and friendship. My student Michael Kocorowski encouraged and provoked me into beginning this dictionary. Certamen players Michael Fleisch, James Ruel, Jeff Tudor, and Ryan Thom were inspirations. Sue Smith provided advice. James Radtke, James Beaudoin, Richard Hallberg, Sylvester Kreilein, and James Wilkinson assisted with words from modern foreign languages. Without the advice of these and many others this dictionary could not have been compiled. Lastly I thank all my colleagues and students at Marquette University High School who have made my teaching career a joy. Basic sources: American College Dictionary (ACD) American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (AHD) Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology (ODEE) Oxford English Dictionary (OCD) Webster’s International Dictionary (eds. 2, 3) (W2, W3) Liddell and Scott (LS) Lewis and Short (LS) Oxford Latin Dictionary (OLD) Schaffer: Greek Derivative Dictionary, Latin Derivative Dictionary In addition many other sources were consulted; numerous etymology texts and readers were helpful. Social Trends and National Defense Scenarios: Forecasting Crises and Forging Responses Using Generation Theory in a Bio-Psychosocial Framework

This white paper is approved for public release with unlimited distribution. Abstract Analytic informatics and vast databases permit modeling of large populations and their economic and political behaviors over decades and centuries. Researchers such as Peter Turchin and Jack Goldstone are demonstrating how such “cliodynamics” can scientifically project large-scale trends into the future. Skepticism about social futurism is well deserved, since specific, risky, and confirmable predictions distinguishes science from pseudo-science. Employing generation theory, William Strauss and Neil Howe predicted that the next world war would occur in or by 2020. In this whitepaper, we recount how cyclical trends in social history theorized by Strauss and Howe align well with the economic and political cycles independently established by cliodynamics. Four archetypal generations (Prophet, Nomad, Hero, Artist) have followed each other in a durable pattern. Every major conflict endured by the United States has occurred when its Prophets (presently, the Boomers) reach elder leadership. Generation theory can also be applied for scenario design and strategic planning, particularly for defense purposes. -
Parental Overprotection in Esmeralda Santiago's1 Almost a Woman
Journal of Studies in Social Sciences and Humanities http://www.jssshonline.com/ Volume 5, No. 4, 2019, 135-141 ISSN: 2413-9270 Parental overprotection in Esmeralda Santiago’s1 Almost a Woman: Sociocultural and psychosocial perspectives Claudia O. Young SEFLA Languages Email: [email protected] Abstract This article starts from the premise that parental overprotection is a prevalent sociocultural aspect in the Spanish-speaking countries, but less common in the United States. This work analyzes how parental overprotection appears in Esmeralda Santiago’s Almost a Woman (1998). There are some reasons why Negi—the protagonist of this novel—is overprotected: (a) she is a woman; (b) she lives in a city of a foreign country; and (c) she is the girl of an absent parent. Also, Ulvi—her lover—represents the “escape” from an oppressive existence and the continuation of being an overprotected woman. Therefore, this essay explains Negi’s life as an overprotected individual and demonstrates the unfavorable consequences brought upon her, particularly from the psycho-sociocultural viewpoint. Key words: Almost a Woman, Esmeralda Santiago, parental overprotection, psychosocial perspective, sociocultural perspective Introduction When I arrived for the first time in the United States, I thought that I could easily adjust myself to the American lifestyle and customs without any problems. However, in time, I realized that the process of acculturation had only just begun. I became conscious of the many differences between my country of origin and the United States (the adoptive one). One of those differences, for instance, is associated with the amount of time that children live in their parents’ home.
