The Nativity of the Lord — December 24, 2017 “ ...Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace,” Isiah 9:5

Today is one of the unique moments in our calendar on which the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve fall upon the same day. Both of the first readings for these celebrations foretell the coming of the Messiah that we anticipate at Christmas. In the reading from the Book of Samuel for the Fourth Sunday of Advent the prophet confirms that the Son of God will come from the house of David, and the reading from the Book of Isaiah for Christmas Eve says that this child born of the house of David will be “ called Wonder-Counselor, God- Hero, Father- Forever, Prince of Peace, [and] his dominion is vast and ever peaceful.” The historical groundwork is thus laid for the birth of Jesus. In the season of Advent, we have individually and as a community been laying the groundwork in our hearts to receive the Messiah. As faithful Christians we have the opportunity to experience In our Nativity scene located in the Blessed this event each year at Christmas. And each year we have Sacrament Chapel, Mary and Joseph wait with us the opportunity to prepare ourselves more fully to for the coming of the Messiah on Christmas Eve. experience and enter into the mystery of Christ’s incarnation and the beginning of a fuller understanding of His ministry in the world, as we emulate and continue this ministry to this day. May this Christmas season bring you Christ’s peace and joy and may our community continue to grow in the work of Christ’s ministry in the year to come. Christmas blessings to you and your .

STEWARDSHIP

The First Christmas in California

There is something particularly special about the Carmel Mission Basilica during the Holiday Season. The mix of history, sacred art and artifacts, coupled to the Christmas trees, lights and garland exude a hopeful and cheerful atmosphere that we are fortunate to share. The first recorded Christmas in California was a humble moment celebrated with joy during the Portola expedition to find Monterey Bay. Father Juan Crespí in 1760 wrote of a cold and rainy December. On the eve of the Nativity the exploratory party celebrated two Masses and marched nearly 10 miles along a coastal valley. When they finally camped that Christmas Eve they were met by over two hundred Native American Peoples who shared “Christmas Gifts” of pinole and a few fish. Gifts of beads were exchanged with the Native Peoples which “pleased them greatly”. Father Crespí with great happiness writes, “It was God’s will that we should celebrate the Nativity Joyfully…so we had Fr. Crespi kneeling at the head of Fr. something with which to celebrate Junipero’s cenotaph . Christmas Day”. That next Christmas morning there was a “biting” cold. The party celebrated Christmas Mass and marched another 10 miles, giving all involved “ good reason to meditate upon the Infant Jesus, who this day was born in Bethlehem, who suffered for us.” They camped that day near a small estuary fishing village where beads again were exchanged for a “great deal of fish” with Native fishermen. Tired and hungry, Father Crespí describes the groups reprieve “ So we celebrated Christmas with dainty, which tasted better to everyone then capons and chickens” and “there was not lacking a Christmas gift of good baskets of pinole and atole.” Merry Christmas, Feliz navidad or in Catalan - 'Bon Nadal'! Sleeping Saint Joseph St. Joseph has always been known as a hard worker. He has always been known for his beautiful carpentry but that was not the only gift he was blessed with. Since before the birth of Jesus, God has sent angels down to St. Joseph to relay messages to him in his sleep. God depends on St. Joseph to help relay messages and answer prayers. As a carpenter, St. Joseph learned the importance of concentration and perfection. That is the reason we must have patience when waiting for our prayers to be answered. St. Joseph takes each prayer he receives seriously and works hard to answer them the best way possible. “I have great love for Saint Joseph, because he is a man of silence and strength. On my table I have an image of Saint Joseph sleeping. Even when he is asleep, he is taking care of the Church!” Pope Francis advised people to leave a “note” under the image of the saint for help whenever they have a problem.

These two Statues of Sleeping Joseph are available in the Carmel Museum Store.
