Further details on CC0 available at: http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/ 3 Abstract Digital literacy has been an increasingly-debated and discussed topic since the publication of Paul Gilster’s seminal Digital Literacy in 1997. It is, however, a complex term predicated on previous work in new literacies such as information literacy and computer literacy. To make sense of this complexity and uncertainty I come up with a ‘continuum of ambiguity’ and employ a Pragmatic methodology. This thesis makes three main contributions to the research area. First, I argue that considering a plurality of digital literacies helps avoid some of the problems of endlessly-redefining ‘digital literacy’. Second, I abstract eight essential elements of digital literacies from the research literature which can lead to positive action. Finally, I argue that co-constructing a definition of digital literacies (using the eight essential elements as a guide) is at least as important as the outcome. 4 Contents Table of Figures For this study, we first used the concept of “apparatus” in Foucauldian (1977) and Agambenian sense (2009). After this analysis, we calledon Bachelard(1932) and his distinction between phénoménotechnique and phénoménographie. The first project began in 2006 around a professional association (Fadben: http://www.fadben.asso.fr/), with the main goal being to distinguish 64 main concepts in information literacy. This work is now completed, and we can observe it quietly through publications.

Making strides towards innovation in the Bay Area, six years later, Bannon got a call from Chicago. At the time, Mayor Rahm Emanuel was looking for a new leader for the Chicago Public Library. “He was really interested in looking at ways of leveraging the unique mission and footprint of the library to be transformative as part of his new vision for the city,” said Bannon. Bannon got the job. And for three and a half years, he’s been serving as commissioner of the Chicago Public Libraries. And as the second largest library system in the country, CPL has a long track record for being an innovative library organization. When Bannon first started, the library was piloting a program called YOUmedia, a digital media program engaging teens in learning. Now he has helped operationalize the program as a central part of what CPL does to serve teens. “It represents for me the kind of library that would have been welcoming to me as a kid,” Bannon said. “The mission is really to connect people to Brian Bannon, the 2015 iSchool Distinguished Alumnus, considers himself ideas and knowledge to make a stronger and more competitive and an unlikely librarian. Dyslexic as a kid, he never felt fully at home in the democratic society. It was an insight into how libraries might lead the environment.

Vincent LIQUETE ( Bordeaux University – IMS/CNRS UMR 5218 [Human Engineering and Knowledge Engineering (Team CIH)] [email protected] / [email protected] Summary of paper: The issue of transliteracy in general and particularly informational transliteracy is increasingly being debated worldwide and from extremely varying perspectives. These concepts refer to highly varied cultural and professional realities and contexts. In this paper we will discuss three dimensions and issues. First, we will attempt to delineate the scope and range of current thinking by researchers in information and communication sciences in France with regard to informational transliteracy, and present its four main components. Second, we will lay the claim that the informational transliteracy approach goes beyond the “Media and Information Literacies (MIL)” approach, in particular by giving all due importance to issues related to learning with computers, i. e. “computation”. Finally, we will present some new thinking that is currently being implemented in the French education system and will present some research projects involving informational transliteracy (LIMIN-R project, Translit project, etc.). Key words: Transliteracy / Information culture / French educative system / Informational practice /Competencie / Forward For twenty years now, the notions of information literacy and thereafter Translitteracy have been the subject of a wide range of definitions and an extensive scientific literature, especially in the Anglo-Saxon world. We will attempt during this presentation to demonstrate some of the main dimensions in terms of skills and attitudes in the various literacies that are giving rise to the new forms of training and support required in the future.

Barrón—Northern Arizona University Sibylle Gruber—Northern Arizona University rian Street reminds us that literacy practices—the “broader cultural conception of particular ways of thinking about and doing reading and writing in cultural contexts” (“What’s ‘New’” 79) —are always social acts and have to be defined in relation to the historical, economic, and political contexts in which they take place. As such, literacy is “always rooted in a particular world-view” and always “contested in relation to power” (“What’s ‘New’” 77-78). Our introduction to this understanding of literacy practicesB as graduate students in the early 1990s gave us confidence that our literacy experiences as a Latina and as an international student from Austria would be addressed and valued. However, more than 15 years later, we are not sure how our own literacy experiences are reflected in our academic environments, and whether our literacy practices, like the practices of so many of our students and faculty colleagues, are social acts that have continued to be “contested in relation to power.” As researchers, teachers, and colleagues, we are from different countries and represent different ethnic backgrounds. One of us speaks Spanish de México; the other speaks Deutsch von Österreich. One grew up east of East Los Angeles; the other grew up in a small rural town of 900 in Austria. Nancy, with a long history of border crossing and family on both sides of the border, deportation of immediate family in the 1930s (what was at that time called Mexican-American “repatriation”), sweatshop labor in Los Angeles, and traveling blacksmiths in Arizona, attended her first high school assembly at 15 and learned that only 50% of her high school class would graduate.

    CHAPTER 4 Reading as Situated Language: A Sociocognitive Perspective James Paul Gee, Arizona State University* y main goal here is to situate reading within a broad perspective that integrates work on cognition, language, social interaction, society, and Mculture. In light of recent reports on reading (National Reading Panel, 2000; Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998) that have tended to treat reading quite nar- rowly in terms of psycholinguistic processing skills, I argue that such a broad per- spective on reading is essential if we are to speak to issues of access and equity in schools and workplaces. I also argue that reading and writing cannot be separated from speaking, listening, and interacting, on the one hand, or using language to think about and act on the world, on the other. Thus, it is necessary to start with a viewpoint on language (oral and written) itself, a viewpoint that ties language to embodied action in the material and social world. I have organized this article into four parts. First, I develop a viewpoint on language that stresses the connections among language, embodied experience, and situated action and interaction in the world. In the second part, I argue that what is relevant to learning literacy is not English in general, but specific varieties of English that I call “social languages.” I then go on to discuss notions related to the idea of social languages, specifically Discourses (with a capital D) and their connec- tions to socially situated identities and cultural models. In the third part, I show the relevance of the earlier sections to the development of literacy in early child- hood through a specific example.

    Gee’s Theory of D/discourse and Research in Teaching English as a Second Language: Implications for the Mainstream Tim MacKay University of Manitoba MacKay, T. Gee’s Theory of D/discourse and ESL 1 In this paper I will undertake an exploration of James Paul Gee’s theory of D/discourses and discuss the relevance of this theory to current research in the fields of second language acquisition (SLA) and teaching English as a second language (TESL/ESL). In doing so, I will elaborate on Gee’s theory of D/discourse and will focus on Gee’s discussion of how D/discourses may be acquired. Following this, I will explore some of the parallels that exist between Gee’s theory and current research in SLA and TESL, and by doing so, will demonstrate how certain conditions are required for D/discourse acquisition to occur in the manner theorized by Gee. My intention is to use Gee’s theory and TESL research to suggest that schools and classrooms with students from minority language backgrounds need to carefully consider the social contexts in which these students are integrated. I also intend to show how Gee’s theory and TESL research provide support for the notion that, for effective language learning and academic achievement to occur for ESL learners, pedagogical interventions need to target students who are first language speaker of English in order to enhance ESL students’ opportunities to learn and integrate into the classroom. Gee’s Theory of D/discourses Linguistic theory has always played a significant role in the formulation of theories for second language acquisition (for summaries see, Beebe, 1988; Ellis, 1985; Fitzgerald Gersten & Hudelson, 2000; Spolsky, 1989).

    FRAIBERG / PRETTY BULLETS Steven Fraiberg Pretty Bullets: Tracing Transmedia/Translingual Literacies of an Israeli Soldier across Regimes of Practice Tracing the literacy practices of an Israeli soldier, this case study examines how his engagement in multilingual and multimodal (MML) composing affects his ways of thinking about and doing literacy. It specifically attends to how MML practices dispose writers to certain orientations to reading, writing, speaking, and design. I first encountered the twenty-five-year-old combat veteran DaVe (his literary pseudonym; it is pronounced “Dave”) as part of a wider study on transnational literacies within Israeli society. He had completed his three years of military service as a soldier in the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces), and his military identity was densely intertwined with his literate identity. This was evidenced by the poems, jottings, drawings, and novels-in-progress from his backpack and leather pouch that he called his “kit bag” (IDF jargon for military gear). Woven into this mix was a range of other props or artifacts coordinated as part of his “identity kit” (Gee, Social 142) that he would set on the table for discussion: a bullet casing, thread for cleaning the bar- CCC 69:1 / SEPTEMBER 2017 87 h87-117-Sept17-CCC.indd 87 9/6/17 7:32 AM CCC 69:1 / SEPTEMBER 2017 rel of his M-16 grenade launcher, pocket knife, multisided dice, tattered Jerusalem bus station time schedule, military identification card, military issued notebooks, and Dungeons and Dragons (D & D) character sheets.
