System of Arrangement Records that are responsive to this FOIA request were found in seven collection areas—Bush Presidential Records: WHORM Alphabetical Files; Bush Presidential Records: WHORM Subject Files; Bush Presidential Records: Staff and Office Files; Bush Vice Presidential Records: Name Files; Bush Vice Presidential Records: Subject Files; Bush Vice Presidential Records: Staff and Office Files; and Quayle Vice Presidential Records: Staff and Office Files. As policy, WHORM Alphabetical Files and WHORM Subject Files are processed at the document level. Staff and Office Files are processed at the folder level, that is, individual documents are not selected and removed from a folder for processing. While this method 1 2017-0098-F maintains folder integrity, it frequently results in the incidental processing of documents that are not wholly responsive to the subject area. The WHORM Subject File compiled by the White House Office of Records Management is comprised of a series of documents assigned a letter/number combination and filed in a subject category. Scope and Content The materials in FOIA 2017-0098-F are a selective, not necessarily all inclusive, body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related materials. FOIA 2017-0098-F contains materials from agencies and individuals concerning the Kingdom of Denmark. The White House Office of Records Management (WHORM) Alphabetical Files contain a letter from a United States citizen asking for assistance in returning from Denmark. The WHORM Subject Files categories contain correspondence; memoranda; news clippings; and brochures from the general public, Congress, and the Bush administration. WHORM Subject File CO041 deals with Denmark exclusively. Additional records concern invitations for the Bushes to the Rebild Independence Day Festival and suggestions for ambassadorships. The Staff and Office Files contain correspondence, memoranda, and publications maintained by individual staff members and offices. The majority of these records concern the state visit of Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik in February 1991. There are also a number of forms and memos concerning official travel by members of the administration to Denmark. The Vice Presidential Name and Subject Files contain correspondence, articles, and press releases on topics such as the African AIDS epidemic and the Rebild National Park Society. The Vice Presidential Staff and Office Files contain correspondence and memos related to visits by Danish Prime Minister Poul Schlüter in 1982 and Mrs. Schlüter in 1983. The Quayle Vice Presidential records are related to the 1991 Danish Embassy reciprocal dinner held by Queen Margrethe II. It is problematic to use the term “emperor” to describe the monarch throughout most of Japanese history. As Joan R. Piggott reminds us in The Emergence of Japanese Kingship, “The term empire is strongly associated with a martial political formation founded on conquest” (8). For most of Japanese history, Japanese monarchs did not preside over empires. The monarchs of Imperial Japan (1890–1945)did rule over an empire that came to include numerous overseas possessions, however. In the case of Hirohito (r. 1926–89), he ascended to the throne as the sovereign of an empire, and thus the term “emperor” is an appropriate title for him for the period from 1926 to 1945. Strictly speaking, the term “emperor” does not describe Japan’s monarch since 1945, for Japan no longer has an empire and the monarch does not even remain sovereign. In the end, however, I decided to use the term “emperor” (as well as terms such as “monarch”) for the postwar period in part because it seemed confusing to switch back and forth between “emperor” for the prewar period and, say, “king” for the postwar period, and also because it served to highlight one of the most important transwar continuities regarding the Japanese throne: Hirohito, who ascended to the throne with the mindset of a sovereign emperor, remained on the throne even as the Japanese empire collapsed and the politico-legal system defining his position underwent sweeping reform.

    Tudors to Windsors: British Royal Portraits 16 March – 14 July Chris Levine, Queen Elizabeth II (Lightness of being), 2007 National Portrait Gallery, London • Founded in 1856, the National Portrait Gallery was the first gallery established exclusively for displaying portraiture. The Gallery’s collection includes a wide variety of works such as painting, sculpture, photography, prints and caricatures. Tudors to Windsors is the first time the NPG has toured their outstanding collection of royal portraiture. Bendigo Art Gallery has collaborated with the National Portrait Gallery on several occasions but this is by far the most extensive exhibition the NPG has ever sent to Australia and Bendigo Art Gallery is one of only two venues in the world, the other being Houston, Texas. The exhibition traces many of the major events in British history, examining the ways in which royal portraits were impacted by both the personalities of individual monarchs and wider historical change. The exhibition explores five royal dynasties, from the Tudors to the Windsors, and includes works by many of the most important artists to have worked in Britain. • Alongside the works of art from the National Portrait Gallery, Bendigo Art Gallery has secured some additional loans to further explain the lives of these fascinating characters.
