MEMORANDUM TO: ~TER SORUM

FROM: S~~ P.ORTER SUBJECT: Action Memo

Mrs. Ford has accepted the following out-of-house invitation:

DATE: Tuesday, May 11, 1976

TIME: 8:30 p.m. (7:50, arrive royal yacht) .

PIACE: Opera House, JCennedy Center ' CONTACT: Christopher ~ Bramsen First Secretary, Embassy of Denmark : 234-4300

COMMENTS: Prior to attending the opening performance of the Royal Danish Ballet, Queen Margrethe II and her husband, His Royal the Prince of Denmark, will host a dinner aboard their .royal yacht. Although Mrs. Ford will not attend the dinner, en route to the Kennedy Center arriving at the Washington Navy Yard around 7:50, she will board the yacht for a few minutes . .. at the conclusibn of their dinner and then she and the Queen and her husband will ride toget:,her to the Kennedy Center. Because the Queen is the hostess for the evening and Mrs. Ford' will be attending at her invitation, I would presume Mrs. Ford would ride in the Queen's car. I understand the ballet itself is long (3 hours). The Queen will host a reception following tee perfo:rmance in the Atrium of the Kennedy Center. Mrs. Ford, however, will not attend the reception. I understand Sue Davis (Ol 33~-57~4; H: 244-4652) will do the advance. ~·.,... -F

THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary to Mrs. Ford

The President and Mrs. Ford are hosting a luncheon honoring Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Prince Henrik Tuesday, May 11 at 12:30 p.m. The Queen is ~--.,-~on a private visit to honor the American bicen-y'enpial.

Mrs. Ford has selected a spring garden theme, reflecting the Danish love

of flowers. One of the favorite Danish flowers 1 freesia, will be featured in the table bouquets of iris, tulips, violets, lilies of the valley, miniature carnations, bachelor buttons and broom. These informal, free style bouquets of wild and cultivated flowers will be in baskets. Azaleas and roses in shades of red and white will decorate the foyer and the cross hall to honor the red and white of the Danish flag.

The ficus trees on the State Floor will have ivy planted at the bases. Ivy will also be used around the napkins along with a spray of lilies of the valley.

The round tables will be draped with tableclothes of yellow. Tables will be set with the Johnson china, the King Charles silver and Morgantown crystal.

Flowers in the State Floor· 'Parlors will be matched to the historic period of the rooms. For example, urns will be filled with flowers in the Red Room in keeping with early 19th century custom. These decorations are patterned after pa~ntings from the era.

Mrs. Jody Shoemaker of the Winthur Museum in Delaware and Ms. Jeanne Shanks of the Museum of Art have donated their personal .. :time to coordinate the decorations. Both specialize in historic flower arranging, which matches the flowers, containers and style of arrangement to the period of the room.

Included among the guests are many Americans of Danish descent.

The menu: Lobster with Remoulade Sauce; Roast Saddle of Lamb1 Almond Potatoes1 Parmesan Asparagus1 Bibb Lettuce Salad; Danish Bleu Cheese Mousse; Glace Praline; Petits Fours1 Demitasse.

Wines: Dry Creek Dry Chenin Blanc1 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon; Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs.

April 21, 1976

MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. FORD

SUBJECT: Visit of Her Majesty Margrethe II Queen of Denmark and His Royal Highness Prince Henrik, May 10, 1976

Although Queen Margrethe II will be coming to the United States on a private visit in May, we have been informed that she will be presenting a porcelain coffee set to you. Made by the Royal Porcelain Factory, it consists of six cups and saucers and is in a Bicentennial theme.

I would like to suggest that you reciprocate by presenting a Malcolm Moran sculpture to her. Mr. Moran would like to donate his "Boy With Boat" to you for this purpose. (A photograph is attached.) The Queen is the mother of two young boys and enjoys sailing; therefore, this piece seems particularly appropriate.

THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary to Mrs. Ford

The President and Mrs. Ford are hosting a luncheon honoring Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Prince Henrik Tuesday, May 11 at 12:30 p.m. The Queen is on a private visit to honor the American bicenvenpial.

Mrs. Ford has selected a spring garden theme, reflecting the Danish love of flowers. One of the favorite Danish flowers, freesia, will be featured in the table bou~uets of iris, tulips, violets, lilies of the valley, miniature carnations, bachelor buttons and broom.

Flowers in the State Floor Parlors will be matched to the historic period of the rooms. For example, urns will be filled with flowers in the Red Room in keeping with early 19th century custom. These decorations are patterned after paintings from the era.

Mrs. Jody Shoe~aker of the Winthur Museum in Delaware and Ms. Jeanne Shanks of the Philadelphia Museum of Art have donated their personal time to coordinate the decorations. Both specialize in historic flower arranging, which matches the flowers, containers and style of arrangement to the period of the room.

Included among the guests are many Americans of Danish descent.

The menu: Lobster with Remoulade Sauce: Roast Saddle of. Lamb; Almond Potatoes; Parmesan Asparagus; Bibb Lettuce Salad; Danish Bleu Cheese Mousse; Glace Praline; Petits Fours; Demitasse.

Wines: Dry Creek Dry Chenin Blanc; Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon; Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs.
