2009 OFFICIAL GUIDE

Get in the Picture

www.redrockFilmFestival.com • 435.705.5555. Welcome Welcome to the 2009 Red Rock Film Festival. The festival previewers have watched hundreds of films since last December to select the best for this year’s international competition – over 50 new films from a dozen countries will be shown over an extended weekend beginning a day after Veterans’ Day. Anyone who attended last year would have noticed that most of our competing features were documentaries - this year, we continue our tradition of powerful docs as well as commit to show more narrative features in the competition. After viewing these films several times, we have found there are themes for everyone to enjoy in independent work, and we were pleasantly DOGGY surprised by the number of imaginative films that were submitted from France. Indie film is film from the soul, and is a voice seldom heard in mainstream society. Mainstream cinema, however, seems to be DUDE about convenience and what we are familiar with. The stories in mainstream cinema are conveniently the same with enough fabricated subplots to prevent RANCH those with imagination to dive beneath the iceberg or think for themselves. The sound levels in mainstream ZION CANYON, UTAH cinema are conveniently adjusted so as to not upset anyone, and sensitive themes are seldom discussed with respect – instead they are either subdued "Where your pets are treated like stars!" or exploited. The mainstream soundtracks are Since 1990 conveniently heard on any corporate radio station. Stories are often timely, instead of timeless, and true science and physics is replaced by movie conventions, popular opinion or political agendas. Playcare Independent film, however, invites the viewers to take off their blinders to learn about another culture, and follow the story beneath the text. Film lovers Boarding should invite everyone - their families, their peers to take a peek at the independent films such as those at this year’s festival where anything can happen.
