Doctoral Dissertations. 798. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/798 The Secular Latin-Texted Works of Adrian Willaert Jonathan Wil Harvey, DMA University of Connecticut, 2015 Abstract In addition to a large body of extant works including masses, hymns, psalm settings, motets, chansons, madrigals, canzone villanesche, and instrumental ricercares, sixteenth-century composer Adrian Willaert (1490 – 1562) also wrote nine settings of secular Latin texts. These nine works can be divided into three categories: five civic motets (Adriacos numero, Haud aliter, Inclite Sfortiadum princeps, Si rore Aonio, and Victor io salve); three settings of excerpts from Virgil’s Aeneid (O socii and two settings of “Dulces exuviae”); and one unique, enigmatic outlier (Flete oculi). These pieces are rarely considered in the existing literature, and many scholars conflate the two “Dulces exuviae” settings as a single work. The texts of six of the nine pieces have never been translated into English before. This study examines these nine pieces through their text, musical material, and cultural-political background in order to determine their function and context. The first chapter of this study consists of a brief summary of Willaert’s life and an examination of the extant sources of his work. In the next chapter, I discuss the genre of the civic motet and examine Willaert’s five contributions to it.

During the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, Venetian society and politics could be considered as a “polychoral culture.” The imagination of the republic rested upon a shared set of social attitudes and beliefs. The political structure included several social groups that functioned as identifiable entities; republican ideologies construed them together as parts of a single harmonious whole. Venice furthermore employed notions of the republic to bolster political and religious independence, in particular from Rome. As is well known, music often contributes to the production and transmission of ideology, and polychoral music in Venice was no exception. Multi-choir music often accompanied religious and civic celebrations in the basilica of San Marco and elsewhere that emphasized the so-called “myth of Venice,” the city’s complex of religious beliefs and historical heritage. These myths were shared among Venetians and transformed through annual rituals into communal knowledge of the republic.

    ‘In her right hand she bore a trumpet, in her left an olive branch...’ Performance Space and the Early Modern Female Wind Player In 2 volumes Sarah Emily Robinson Volume 1 Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Newcastle University, The International Centre for Music Studies (ICMuS) May 2017 Abstract References to early modern female wind players are scattered across a wide range of organological, iconographical and musicological scholarship. Normally highlighted as being unusual and in stark opposition to conventional ideals of female behaviour and musical practice of this time, such examples are often reduced to footnotes or side-lined as interesting, but unique instances. To date, no scholar has systematically brought these sources together to examine the continuities, tensions and changes to representations of, attitudes to, and detailed evidence for early modern women playing wind instruments. Among the questions I ask in this thesis are: How did early modern female wind players have access to musical educations, tutors, instruments and repertoire? What were the types of performance spaces in which they could play? Were there any constraints or rulings that stipulated how they were to present their music to private or public audiences? And where possible, I will also ask how female wind players were received by audiences and how the presentation of such unusual skills might have been used to contribute to institutional reputations. Importantly, these examples enable moments of change and stasis in the use of wind instruments to be traced to certain times and places during the early modern period which, in turn, reflect wider social patterns relating to musical developments, as well as changing instrument use and accessibility.

Mark the music.” - William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice 3 ABSTRACT Alessandro Grandi (1586-1630) is a relatively unknown, yet significant figure in the development of seventeenth-century Italian sacred music. The dissemination of Grandi’s works, the number of reprints of his motets, and his inclusion in anthologies provide sufficient evidence that the substantial output of this composer is worthy of the public domain. If Grandi is to be performed, the creation of a reliable edition is essential. This submission is comprised of a scholarly edition of Grandi’s six books of concertato motets; a selection of ten motets with fully realised continuo parts which are intended to exemplify my research and enable others to apply these techniques to similar motets; an audio recording of a recital given in order to demonstrate the findings of my research; an accompanying study of related performance issues, including ornamentation, pitch, temperament, transposition, continuo style, figured bass, and instrumentation; and a historiographical study of the dissemination of the small-scale concertato motet across Europe, which has ultimately guided my choice of source material. Mine is the first complete edition of Grandi’s six books of concertato motets.

The so-called Prima Prattica style of sixteenth-century polyphonic music was largely codified through the music of Adriano Willaert and the theoretical writings of his protege Gioseffo Zarlino, both musicians attached to the Chapel of San Marco, the central musical organization of the Republic of Venice. As the century progressed, however, the elements of Willaert’s style that were emphasized and emulated by subsequent generations of Venetian musicians took the ceremonial music of the Republic in an aesthetic direction that prioritized expression over balance, sonic effects over contrapuntal clarity, and, at times, bombast over contemplation. The stylistic chasm that developed between this specifically Venetian music and what could be heard elsewhere in Europe at the time has yet to be adequately acknowledged or explained, a problem for music history especially due to the profound international influence wielded by later Venetian or Venice-adjacent composers such as ii Gabrieli, Monteverdi, Schütz, and Vivaldi.

    Performance Tips by Susan Lewis Hammond Claudio Monteverdi, Orfeo Recitative formed the core of early Baroque opera, and it requires a certain degree of flexibility and rhythmic freedom in its execution. Compelling advice on how to perform recitative comes from an anonymous treatise titled The Choragus (named after the professional charged with directing theatrical works, the choragus, or director). The Choragus likely dates from the 1630s and captures the aesthetic concerns of theatrical production from the early seventeenth century. The author reserves a chapter for recitation, in which he advises that singing should not be continuous; instead, the singer should pause at the end of each thought. The most important consideration for performing the instrumental part of early opera is the use of basso continuo—a type of quasi-improvised accompaniment in which the bass line is provided with figures (numbers, flats, and sharps) written above or below the relevant note that tell the player what harmony is needed to make the correct realization. It was a compositional norm of the early Baroque period for composers, including Monteverdi, to leave the figures out altogether and to expect performers to determine the harmony from the other parts. Performers may benefit from studying editorial realizations of Monteverdi’s continuo parts, but should feel free to try out different options of their own. Unlike most Baroque opera scores, Monteverdi gives great detail on instrumentation in the 1609 printed score to Orfeo, where he specified a total of forty-two individual instruments; the continuo group alone consisted of two harpsichords, one double harp, three chitarroni, two ceteroni, two organi di legno, two regals, and one basso de viola da brazzo.

Tra i brani scelti da Bernardini e I Musicali Affetti spicca il concerto per oboe e archi TWV 51: c1, dove il celebrato oboista potrà esprimere appieno le proprie doti tecniche ed espressive che l’hanno portato a collaborare con artisti del calibro di Jordi Savall e Sigiswald Kuijken tra gli altri.
