Memories of his blitz on Newmarket=s slick surface in last year=s 2000 Guineas led the mind to wonder if he could cope with a slog in these conditions, and the usual flood of cash was stemmed slightly to produce a starting price of 2-11. Languid in the preliminaries and asleep in the gates, the homebred was able to flaunt his unnatural talent by handing the world-class Cirrus des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top {Ire}) a two-length headstart into the straight before picking him up as if still on the Newmarket gallops. At the line, the margin was 1 3/4 lengths, and there was a suggestion that he could have been idling in front. (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was another 3 1/2 lengths back in third. Khalid Abdullah announced his immediate retirement, simply stating, AThat is the end,@ and it was left to Sir Henry Cecil to pay the ultimate tribute. Champion S. cont. As the clouds broke over Ascot in the build-up to this finale, the tension rose in parallel, and a final bout of showers on Thursday into Friday created a crucible in which his champion status would be challenged most acutely. Months of nurture and expert horsemanship saw him enter the buzzy parade ring with nonchalance, and that casual air saw him surrender a normally crucial margin of three lengths out of the stalls. Ian Mongan on Bullet Train (GB) (Sadler=s Wells) dropped anchor in front to allow Tom Queally to ease into the pack, which forced Olivier Peslier, on Cirrus des Aigles, to take up the running after 1 1/2 furlongs, with Frankel coasting along in fourth. Bullet Train came back to pester the French raider and was in front again on the approach to the home turn, but by now his customary honest pace- setting role had been shot to pieces, and as Cirrus des Aigles took control with Peslier apparently full of horse at the top of the stretch, Frankel was still over two lengths down. That deficit had been wiped out with the minimum of effort by the furlong marker, where Queally became animated for the first time, and after administering one slap with the whip with just over 100 yards left to race, immortality was sealed. His rider, who has played no small part in the success story, was full of admiration afterwards. AI=m so proud of him and it=s been an amazing journey,@ Queally commented. AI can=t tell you what it=s meant to be part of it. He=s just getting more and more Juddmonte=s Racing Manager Lord Grimthorpe relaxed as time goes on, and waited until the gates commented, AHe=s wonderful--the greatest, isn=t he? He were open. He was slowly away at York, and he was didn=t enjoy that ground as much as he normally does, slower today, but I=ve so much belief in the horse and but he got into a rhythm and was happy. Every Cloud... Defeat for Cirrus des Aigles was met with typical magnanimity by his trainer Corine Barande-Barbe, who commented, AThey were very close. We lost two lengths, but we=ll be better next year. It is no disgrace to be beaten by such a horse, and there are no excuses: Frankel is the best. He will go on his travels now, probably to Hong Kong.@ John Gosden said of Nathaniel, AI am thrilled with the result. I think it=s what we all wanted. Frankel had to race in the end, but what a great horse.@ The Juddmonte Train Works To Perfection... Ian Mongan later revealed the tactics as he helped shape the race in favor of Frankel on the colt=s pacemaker, stable companion and 3/4brother Bullet Train. AThe plan, now I can say it, was to jump Bullet Train and go fast enough so that Frankel settles, and then take a pull and make it into a mile race,@ he explained. AWhen I saw that Frankel was happy and traveling well, I was able to pick the pace up again. Although I didn=t want to put pace to the race a long way from home, I also didn=t want Cirrus des Aigles to have the run of the race, so I put him under a bit of pressure. I must be the only jockey to ever have punched the air when I crossed the line in sixth.@ FRANKEL FLASHBACK... Juddmonte’s star was named a TDN Rising Star following his career opener Aug. 13, 2010. In response to Gary Biszantz=s Op/Ed in the TDN 10/18/12:

Dear Editor, I commend the Gary Biszantzes and Arthur Hancocks of the Thoroughbred world. It only seems logical that our national organization in some shape or form contributes to the welfare of our horses even after their training has ceased. An NTRA-sponsored Humane Society for horses could be a logical next step. However, certain realities must be addressed that pertain not only to our racehorses but all the horses in the States. It is imperative that our system of recovery include not only "our" horses, but all horses. Prepared to stand beside William Backer and receive the criticism he received a couple of years ago, we must understand that the numbers do not add up; that it is absolutely not possible to financially retire and maintain all the horses in America. The American Horse Council predicted there were some 170,000 unwanted horses annually in the U.S. in 2007. Of this number some 70-80,000 were exported to Mexico and Canada for processing. This avenue of escape has been recently cut off. The effects on horse welfare will be staggering. Enough numbers; let me give you another hands-on perspective. Thirty years ago, as a first-year graduate and employed in South Florida, I had the "pleasure" to cut a nylon halter out of horse's head that had grown literally into the head. Times have not changed. I see this neglect in some shape or form day in and day out. People on the lower end of racing, with the $5,000 claimer struggle to make ends meet, much less being able to afford to retire their horse. Horse protection agencies are struggling at all levels to take on new horses. We have to think of a system that supports not only our horses, but the rest of our nation's horses as well; none deserve to suffer. As a farmer at all levels I abhor waste. As a human being, I abhor suffering. Every 4 seconds a child somewhere dies of starvation. Most of us receive a large part of our sustenance from the processing of farm animals, whether it's pigs, chickens, cattle or even fish. The fine saddles we sit on and the soft leather shoes we wear are donated generously by our Creator. The numbers would suggest we are given a choice. For some of us it is a generous donation to those in need and not a waste of what we have been given. Its most noble for us to treat our horses with the utmost respect; respect comes in many different forms.
