Friday Evening Speaker Dan Marcone Seasons Counseling 6:45 to 9:00 p.m.

How to Be the Least Anxious Person in Your Child’s Life Have you ever wondered how you can be the least anxious person in your child's life? With the growing number of pressures facing today's families, parents can be a catalyst for lessening the strongholds of tension and anxiety instead of increasing the pressures of outward appearances and unrealistic expectations. In this special presentation, Dan Marcone—a local mental health counselor with a specialty in anxiety in children and teens—will teach parents how to reduce their own anxiety ; how to identify their child's anxiety triggers and recognize them as needs not just behaviors; how to walk alongside a child through anxieties or stressful seasons; and how to nurture a child's ability to regulate his or her emotions. His workshop will give parents tools they can use to take their next practical steps toward connection with their children and the reduction of anxiety in the home.

About Dan

Dan Marcone was born in upstate New York to first generation Italian parents, and was raised in southern Florida. He played football in high school and then served as an Airborne Ranger in the U.S. military for two years before marrying Amy, his best friend and wife. After completing undergraduate studies in New Orleans, Dan directed a youth ministry in North Georgia. While working with adolescents and their families, Dan discovered his passion for counseling, which led him to return to school, graduating with a Masters of Mental Health Counseling from Reformed Theological Seminary. After serving as Director of Counseling for the Adolescent Life Coaching Center, Dan co- directed Journeys Counseling Center and later founded Seasons Counseling in March 2014. In his spare time, Dan is devoted to studying new interventions, therapies and the latest research and trends in the field. The physiology and neuroscience behind trauma diagnosis and healing has been a main focus of intense study with application in his practice. Outside of work, Dan loves hanging out with his wife, three grown children and new granddaughter. His areas of specialization include trauma and/or abuse (emotional, physical and sexual), relationships, personal development, codependency, anxiety, depression, parent training, and teen issues.

Unhurried Homeschooling: Why We Need to Slow Down Durenda Wilson

In a world that is moving at warp speed, it’s easy to forget that kids are still kids. Their needs haven’t changed: they need time to explore and experiment with the real world around them, to absorb life through all of their senses, to process their thoughts at their own pace. All of these aspects are crucial in laying a firm foundation for higher learning, but this takes TIME and time isn’t something that most parents feel like they have. We feel the pressure to “do it all’, but what if that isn’t really what God has called us to? Could we be running past what God has for us because we have a hurried, narrow vision of what we’re “supposed” to be doing? Do we have the courage to slow our hearts and listen to God’s still, small voice? Find out how slowing down can transform your homeschooling journey. ~ 10 ~

Saturday Workshop Session I: 9:45 – 10:45 a.m.

Am I Ruining My Children?

Sherri Seligson

Let’s face it. At one time or another we all feel that by homeschooling our children, they are missing out on “something.” Yet these worries come because we are living in the moment and can’t see the big picture. After all, we’re pretty sure the 7th grader down the street is up for a Nobel Prize, and everyone else is receiving a full-ride scholarship to Princeton, right? Not to mention that in the last few years of homeschooling, we haven’t even begun to cover 13th century humanities in China! RELAX. This workshop will talk you down from the cliff – or at least encourage you that homeschooling is the BEST thing for your children. Join Sherri in a humorous, informative and revealing discussion as she shares how she went from stressing over teaching everything about everything to trusting in the path, resources and experiences God had for her children.

Men With Purpose, Part I

Mike Bastian and Dave Seligson

God created everyone with purpose. Often we confuse purpose with having a great job or being successful in some way. Join Dave Seligson and Mike Bastian as they share thoughts about a man’s role in the home and the church, and how those roles intersect with homeschooling.

What to Expect When You are Expecting… to Talk to Your Children About Sex!

Joy Chambers

When you were expecting your first child, you read the books – asked many questions at each doctor visit – endured wives’ tales and personal stories from friends and family – watched videos with fear and trembling. Then it was your turn to deliver! Fearing the unknown, you had to face the challenge of delivery! Could you do this? Talking about sex can feel just as daunting. In a sex-crazed, confused culture, how do we navigate these waters and create environments and relationships that allow healthy communication about this topic? Join this conversation and learn from mistakes made and wisdom gained in a family with eight adult children.

Saturday Workshop Session II: 11:00 – 12:00

Nurturing Sibling Relationships

Durenda Wilson

As homeschooling parents we have a unique opportunity to nurture sibling relationships among our children just by nature of the fact that our kids typically spend so much time together. Find out why it’s so important to nurture sibling relationships as well as practical ways to do that!

The Roadschool Moms, Mary Beth Goff and Kimberly Travaglino, welcome you to this workshop where they will encourage and give you practical tips based on their vast experiences of interweaving travel with learning.

Essentials of Early Home Education

Cheryl Bastian

Young children have an insatiable curiosity to learn and a natural desire to work alongside people they love most. How do we utilize these innate qualities to maximize their learning potential at home? Drawing from twenty-eight years of experience of teaching early learners, Cheryl challenges attendees to look beyond societal and educational pressures to the emotional and developmental needs of young children, offering practical suggestions about how to use read-aloud time, life experiences, and play to learn foundational skills, foster relationships, and nurture young hearts while keeping a child's natural curiosity and wonder alive and flourishing.

Saturday Workshop Session III: 12:30 - 1:30 Homeschooling Through a Crisis

Durenda Wilson

There’s not a homeschooling family out there who won’t face some sort of crisis during their home educating years. It can be tempting to believe that those experiences are a detriment to our “school” days when, in fact, they can be the most fruitful times for our families in the big scheme of things. Whether your crisis is a move, job change, death, or illness, God has a good plan for your family. Help gain eyes to see the blessings God has for you while homeschooling through a crisis.

~ 15 ~

The Power of Words

Sherri Seligson

Our world is filled with words. Whether we are reading them, writing them or instructing with them, they are our tools to build stories, create emotions, and make connections. Yet we need to be aware that words have the power to build and destroy. They can taste bitter or sweet. They can cause people to stumble or make them soar! God has much to say about our words. They need to be crafted carefully and gently but firmly shared. This is how we can engage others and train up our children. Let’s contemplate not only the power of our words, but how we can boldly use them.

This is Us—Homeschooling Parents!

Joy Chambers

We feel stretched beyond our limits - fearful, anxious, controlling, pressured, exhausted, burned out, isolated, and discouraged. The challenges of creating a heathy home school family is real, and our own stresses trickle down, affecting the children we love. In the midst of these challenging and full days, how can our homes be places where each person experiences love, fulfillment, and peace in the process of growing up? This is Us, a popular current television series, is based on the premise that “everyone has a family, and every family has a story.” It is true, and you are writing your family’s story today. How can we make the most of everyday life, knowing that the busy activities of these days impact ~ 18 ~ who we and our children become? How can we create connections that will transcend the seasons of our and their lives? Welcome to your family’s story – let’s talk.
