Report from the Buildings Committee

The Committee formerly known as the Halls Committee will now be known as the Buildings Committee. The Pavilion in Westminster Field and the Heathside buildings are now included in the terms of reference.

The electrical work in the stage area of the Village Hall including the work needed for the Valley Players productions has been completed.

The ongoing problem with the leak in the Jubilee Hall kitchen ceiling is in the process of being addressed – the urgent repair work to the parapets started in mid-January. The source of the leak is still of concern as the roof has been inspected and there is no obvious leak. A tarpaulin has been laid over the tiled area to try to isolate the problem area.

Small jobs in the Village Hall kitchen are in the process of being sorted such as the extractor fan and bubbling of the floor covering in a few places. The storage cupboards under the stage needs attention as they are continually being repaired – the idea to have bespoke, secure slotted doors without hinges has been proposed.

The winter hanging baskets will be replaced with summer bedding in May.

There is a new clock and a new set of mugs in the Jubilee Hall. A sign has been put up with information on how to reset the power button should the power fail in the Jubilee Hall.

Sadly, the new toilets at Heathside have been vandalised on two occasions since their installation last autumn but the Parish Council is looking at ways of redressing the issue.

We are always happy to accept bookings from casual hirers and potential new regular hirers. Please do spread the word.

Terry Moyle – Building Committee Chairman

Report from the Recreation and Open Spaces Committee

The toilet facilities at Heathside are now fully installed and open along with the drinking fountain.

A big thank you to all those that adopted one of the Cherry Blossom trees in the Avenue at Westminster Field, they have all now been adopted and will look great once in flower. The Parish Council will be looking at similar schemes in the future.

Apple trees are being planted in Heathside and in the Westminster Field picnic area, so that the fruit can be enjoyed by all when they are mature.

The Parish Council are now in full ownership of land that was previously owned by District Council, so we are looking at improving the playground in Shrubbery Road later this year.

We are looking at sectioning part of the picnic area in Westminster Field to create access to the river for dogs. This is the result of requests from the public as well as complaints that dog owners are allowing their dogs to run loose in the picnic area. The new sectioned area would create a secure area for dogs to cool down in the river without compromising the enjoyment of people who are using the picnic area.

Watch this space for many other projects which are in the pipeline and will be shared once they have been discussed further.

James Stewart – ROS Committee Chairman

Many thanks for all the support we received from our helpers and residents of our two villages when we travelled around the villages with Father Christmas and his sleigh – we raised over £2,000.

We are very good at fundraising, as you can see, but not so well at recruiting new members, so we are sorry to announce that because of lack of members we are unable to organise our SUMMER FETE AND CLASSIC CAR SHOW this year. We have only three members at the moment and are battling to keep the club going. Report from Darent River Preservation Society

Malcolm Dunn – DRIPS

Since October 2019 we have had over 14 inches of rain in the area.

Flooding in the North of and the Midlands has been widely reported in the media. Westminster Field was flooded around the

21 st December 2019 and approximately four inches of water was moving across the field towards the pavilion before emptying back into the river and nearby fishing lakes. Ducks were seen paddling in the garden of the Fighting Cocks and the picnic tables were half submerged! The flow over the weir at Westminster Field was spectacular. The floods had all but gone by the end of December although the river level was still high.

Reports from the Environment Agency clearly indicate that the aquifer is really well topped up. This boost to below ground level puts us in an excellent position to deal with the months ahead. Even if we have another hot dry summer, the Darent will survive. Observations from previous years indicate that flow and volume will be low by October. One of the main culprits for exporting the Darent was the pumping station at Horton Kirby. This is now only operating at around 50% of its maximum capability. As a result, the benefits to the river are immense.

There is no progress as regard housing development in our district, and the subject is still being discussed. The demand for water could exceed supply from the Darent Valley. 10 VILLAGERS GARDENING CLUB

There are sometimes variations in the regular pattern of venues and services due to seasonal celebrations or maintenance work on church buildings, so it is always a good idea to check before setting off, especially if you come only occasionally.

*Breakfast with ‘The Story Keepers’ ! New for 2020: at 9.10am on fourth Sundays (before Family Praise) we'll be showing an episode of The Story Keepers, with breakfast - croissants, fresh fruit, juice and hot drinks. The Story Keepers is an animation series following a small community of Christians living in the year 64AD and passing on the stories of Jesus, despite danger from Roman soldiers under the orders of Emperor Nero. It's a great introduction to the impact of the life of Jesus, whose first followers were inspired to love, to forgive and to live with immense courage. All are welcome. There's plenty of space for little ones to play. The Story Keepers has a "Universal" film rating and episodes are about 25 minutes long.

** Café Communion is a Communion service especially designed to be easy to come to if you are new to church, or are bringing children along. 13

Vicar’s News

Revd Emma and her husband Revd Josh are expecting the arrival of their second child later this year, in mid-June. All being well, Revd Emma will be on maternity leave from the beginning of June into the early months of 2021. Thanks to the continuing hard work of members of the church community, church life will carry on! However, if you are hoping to plan a church event for the second half of this year, it may be worth getting in touch with Revd Emma sooner rather than later.

Messy Church : creativity, story-telling and worship for all ages. We meet on the first Saturday in the month at St Margaret’s Darenth from 2pm to 4pm (except January and August). All are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult. We learn together about God by being creative, spending time together, hearing stories and sharing food together. The charge per child is £2 which includes a light tea. For further information please contact the vicar or visit our FB page www.facebook.com/MessyChurchMJM

Tea or coffee, cake and a chat St Mary’s will be open on Tuesday afternoon from Tuesday 25th February offering you tea, coffee, cake and somewhere to chat together with friends or just to relax in the church’s beautiful space. The church is open between 2pm and 4pm in term time only. There is no charge but you can put a donation in the green jar if you wish which will go towards the running of the church .

Christenings/Baptisms To talk about a christening/baptism please come along to a Sunday morning service and make yourself known to the vicar over coffee after the service.

Weddings: To make enquiries about a wedding in any church of the benefice, please contact the vicar (details above).

Churchyard We all value our beautiful villages and St Mary’s Parochial Church Council members are keeping a close eye on the churchyard. Periodically dead flowers or plants may be removed in order to keep our churchyard looking at its best. If you wish to find out more about the Diocese of Rochester details can be found here on Churchyard Regulations; www.rochester.anglican.org/content/pages/documents/ 1428486156.pdf

For information : St Mary’s has plans of the Gardens of Remembrance and the old churchyard. Many local people and people from across the world visit us each year to find out more about their family’s history or to have a loved one laid to rest in the churchyard. If the grave is in the new churchyard close to the school then the Parish Council Office will be able to identify where the grave is.

Your support of St Mary’s Thank you to all those who supported or participated in the Christmas Bazaar in November and we would particularly like to thank the staff and children from the Riverside Kindergarten. This event raised in excess of £1000 for the running of the church.

Talks at St Mary’s: The “Talks at St Mary’s” programme began in January. Refreshments are served in the interval and there is a raffle. All money raised from a retiring collection goes to the upkeep of the church buildings. The programme continues as listed below at 7.30pm on: Saturday 8th February Sarah Lewis “Local societies: What did they do for us?” Saturday 14th March Tristan Ward, “Thou shalt not kill, or can I?” Saturday 18th April Rob and Marj Mitchell “Folk Music“

The Royal British Legion has been supporting Service men and women, ex-serving personnel and their families since 1921.

The British Legion was formed on 15 May 1921, bringing together four national organisations of ex-Servicemen that had established themselves after the First World War. Today we are at the heart of a national network looking after our Armed Forces community. The Legion is here to help serving and ex-serving personnel all year round, every day of the week. The function of the Legion is to support veterans and their families, it is all funded by volunteers and public donations.
