Southern Maryland's Own Daryl Thompson to Suit up MLB Vet, And Southern Maryland's Own Daryl Thompson To Suit Up Posted by TBN On 07/31/2012 MLB Vet, and Hughesville Native To Start Blue Crabs Game Tonight Vs. Long Island Ducks Southern Maryland native and Major League veteran Daryl Thompson has been added to the Blue Crabs roster it was announced Tuesday by Blue Crabs manager Patrick Osborn. Thompson is only one season removed from MLB experience with the Cincinnati Reds, and was a very sought after acquisition for the Blue Crabs (9-7, 39-47) who are currently in first place in the Liberty Division’s second half. Thompson will make his debut for the Blue Crabs tonight as they face first half Liberty Division Champion Long Island Ducks (6-11, 45-41) at Regency Furniture Stadium in game two of a four game series. An eight round selection of the Monteral Expos in the 2003 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the La Plata High School graduate has recorded 10 years in the affiliated minors, mostly spent with the Cincinnati Reds organization from 2006-2011, going 36-44 with a 3.79 ERA. Thompson’s biggest career moment occurred in June 2008 while pitching for the Reds, when he threw five shutout innings at the Old Yankee Stadium against one of the MLB’s most powerful lineups that season. Thompson was playing in the show as recent as last season for the Reds, getting one start with three innings pitched allowing five runs on six hits. He was later released from Cincinnati and picked up by the Twins organization for the 2012 season where he played for Triple-A Rochester going 1-5 in nine starts allowing 24 runs on 47 hits. Thompson has since been released from the Twins organization. Thompson has a career 0-3 record in the majors with an 8.31 ERA in four games, three of them starts. Blue Crabs skipper Patrick Osborn is confident in the young star saying, “I think he can help us. That's the bottom line. He can pitch. He's got a good arm and a good breaking ball.” The signing of Thompson also serves as a milestone move for the Blue Crabs organization, now in their fifth season, by pairing a homegrown star to the team and fan base. “We are extremely excited to welcome Daryl to the Blue Crabs, as he is a guy that children in Southern Maryland can look up to. He’s a local talent that was able to reach the pinnacle of baseball, and we love the idea of our fans and area youth being able to watch him pitch right here in their back yard” states Blue Crabs Assistant General Manager Brian Radle. This week’s home stand continues tonight as the Blue Crabs welcome the ASA National Softball Teams to Regency Furniture Stadium along with the Hearing Professional Silver Sluggers. First pitch is slated for 7:05pm. Fans should also be reminded that tomorrow, August 1, is a special 11:05am start time. The first 1,000 fans to come through the gates on Thursday will take home a Papa Pinch Garden Gnome courtesy of Domino’s. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

The purpose of the draft is to assign amateur baseball players to major league teams.
