Abstract:

The topic of my project is “Grapho-therapy”. Grapho-therapy is a scientific method of identifying, evaluating, and understanding personality via the strokes and patterns revealed by handwriting. It is not document examining, which involves the examination of a sample of handwriting to determine the author. Document examining is often used in forgery cases--no comment on character or personality is derived from the handwriting.

In this project I have first explained the theory or mechanism behind the therapy in my background or literature study. By going through various internet sites and books and by using personal knowledge on this topic I have made an attempt to understand the basic and functioning involved in grapho-therapy. Then through my case study I have attempted to test my accumulated knowledge, practically.

The findings of this project seem to be positive. They have given me better insight into the topic and have answered my question on how effective this technique is.

2

Learning from the project:

The project has been very educative and helpful to me in understanding not only the in depths of my topic but also the appropriate and effective ways of researching and analyzing my data or information. I learnt from this project the appropriate ways of presenting my learning. This project on “Grapho-therapy” has helped me to test my knowledge and skill and to read and gather more information on this subject through literature studies and field work. From this project I have learnt some dynamics of counseling, such as how different people come with different problems and how these problems can be tackled in a number of ways. As I plan to continue my higher studies in Industrial psychology, this has been a great opportunity to learn and apply a therapy as interesting as this one. Also during my I came across many other , articles, information etc not only pertaining to my topic but related to other studies surrounding my focus, hence it will be safe enough to claim that I have gained much more information than what is stated in this file, hence I would call it an all round learning experience.

Introduction:

You may be shocked to hear that handwriting analysis is not new. The modern version of has its roots in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. What you are studying here is a that is at least 100 years old. The first known books on graphology date back to Spain in 1552.

In the last century, researchers have sifted through theories and now agree on over 100 universal traits and symbols in handwriting.

In most countries outside the United States, handwriting analysis is known as graphology. In France, Europe, India, and all over the world, handwriting analysis is bundled into one field. It is like saying that you are a doctor but not a specialist of any kind. There are different fields and different in this area.

The Gestalt method is based on the German research in the early 1900s and is similar to Rorschach’s inkblot tests. Gestalt was a therapist who took a view of the entire whole first, then started to break a subject into parts. His opinion is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It might include spirituality. It might include . It might include a look at many personality traits. The Gestalt therapist works, in essence, from a very broad perspective.

The trait stroke method is now most prominent. This method was pioneered by Milton Bunker, who wrote many books in the 1950s. He founded a training company in Chicago that was very popular from the 1950s until its demise during the mid-90s. Bunker was a pioneer in bringing this approach to analyzing handwriting to America from France. This method views each stroke as significant and builds up to form the whole personality, weighing all factors big and small.

To use an architectural metaphor, the Gestalt practitioner would step back 1,000 feet from a building and describe the general impression. This can be useful, but one might miss the basement, the back yard, or the internal offices. The trait stroke practitioner would look at each of the bricks one by one, then each office, then each wall, and slowly walk backward until the whole building was in full view. Having a micro- and macro view can provide more in-depth results. Both would have revealed accurate results if the analyst were extremely skilled and experienced. The challenge is that many students trained in Gestalt-only do not have enough experience or the proper training to deliver a comprehensive and accurate analysis.

Literature Survey:

In Handwriting Analysis 101 - The Basic Traits written by Bart A. Baggett, Handwriting analysis is described as a modern form of psychology that identifies personality traits and human character through handwriting.

Personality is the term for behavior and character. In the study of psychology, personality is a subcategory of general psychology. Personality is a cluster of character traits and the corresponding behaviors based on those character traits.

Handwriting analysis is the quickest way to accurately discover someone’s true personality out of any formal psychological test on the market today. Handwriting is accurate because once you learn to write, the structure of your actual handwriting is handed over to the power of your subconscious mind. Your handwriting changes as your personality evolves or changes as a reaction to life’s many positive and negative events.

The subconscious mind is a popularized by . He identified the mind as having various parts that were out of our conscious control. Freud attributed much of our behavior to those programs running beneath the surface. developed the concept much further in his research.

The subconscious, or the unconscious, is the part of the mind that controls the autonomic nervous system--breathing, heartbeat, and the body’s reactions that run automatically-- including the fight or flight reactions. Anything that is not in your current awareness is said to be stored in this area of your mind.

Handwriting is formed in a specific part of the brain that controls language and writing skills. If someone has an injury to that part of the brain, his ability to write and speak will be compromised. Therefore, individual handwriting is hardwired into the nervous system. That is why it is very difficult to create a forgery that fools a professional document examiner. The examiner knows what to look for at the microscopic level that identifies the actual author.

When you were a child, a lot of information was programmed into your mind. Your subconscious mind develops many belief systems and character traits based on this programming. We are often stuck wondering how it can be changed. Why do we crave chocolate or love a certain smell? Have you ever heard a song that instantly triggered memories and emotions from 20 years ago? These cravings and emotions are all programs running inside your subconscious mind. Most of the therapy processes invented in the twentieth century worked from the premise that our past memories and past traumas were unconsciously controlling our present life. Therefore, as an , it seems useful to become aware of those past triggers and handle them--forgive, re-analyze them, or simply become aware of the event.

5

Handwriting is a projection directly from the subconscious mind. We can all write printing or calligraphy with precision and attention for a few minutes. When we stop paying attention to the formation of letters, writing is a simple projection of the subconscious mind. You can’t fake it for long.

It has recently been documented that our signatures and handwriting styles are so statistically unique that a computer can tell the author of a handwriting sample 97 percent of the time. A forensic document examiner with proper training can fare even better.

In April 2002, The National Institute of Justice turned to Sargur Srihari, a computer scientist and director of the Center of Excellence in Document Analysis and Recognition at the University of Buffalo, to help establish that a person’s handwriting was indeed individualistic. This concept plays a key role in courts throughout the world; thus, there is an entire based on forensic document examination.

However, handwriting analysis is a different profession. Graphology, or handwriting analysis, as it is often called, is the science of revealing personality traits from someone’s handwriting, not of identifying the author.

The subject of how we form personality is vast and worthy of several large volumes. Essentially, personality is formed by a combination of genetic coding, behavior, and experiences. If you take the viewpoint that every child born is like a brand new computer program, then every event, situation, word, or this child has experienced from birth until now, imprints into the subconscious mind. These imprints create personality-- everything from fears, limitations, belief systems, and power. Personality is a result of past experiences and decisions.

Can we change our lives? Well, everything can be changed. The universe is fluid, and nothing stays the same. The only people who say, “People can’t change,” are those who are bitter or fearful of change in themselves or those around them.

“The decision to master the science of handwriting analysis changed my life in profound ways. Not only did I master the material inside the program, but I changed my handwriting based on the grapho-therapy suggestions. Wow! How my life has changed. I’m more confident, more successful, and now I have the personality to lead people and change lives by teaching this science. And, as a bonus, I am now married to an amazing woman. I hope that everyone has the opportunity to learn this skill!”

—Rafiullah Baig, Bangalore, India President, Handwriting University India

You can change anything if you are willing to do the work and have the right system to get it done. If you find a and a way that works for you, you can make enormous changes quickly. Most people don’t change for several reasons, mainly because they cannot get past their fears or they do not know how. This book will give you insight into things that you may want to change and some methodologies that can be used to change your life and the lives of those around you.

Grapho-therapy is the process of changing your handwriting to positively affect your personality. It is an effective form of therapy to change something in your life, and it gives you a means of doing so. By accessing the direct conduit of the subconscious mind, neural pathways in your brain, you can change aspects of your character by changing your handwriting. For example, if you change the way you cross the letter t, it then has a corresponding effect upon who you are, what you believe you are worth, how much money you feel you can have, and your general self-esteem. There are many ways to change your life, grapho-therapy being one way that has been proven to be very effective and very easy. It accesses your subconscious mind and also works on your conscious mind.

THE MANY USES AND APPLICATIONS OF HANDWRITING ANALYSIS –

There are many uses of handwriting analysis. Below are a few of the most popular applications we use today. You will find more.

Dating and socializing

Handwriting analysis could be the most effective tool you ever discover to meet new people. People have found that with the know-how, they can meet people more easily by asking for a writing sample or just an autograph. In chapters to come, you will learn how that same writing sample can likely predict the compatibility of a couple or friends. There is never a shortage of attention when you have the “magic” skill of handwriting analysis to present to a crowd at a function or social gathering. It is the perfect icebreaker.

Roommates and landlords

Most landlords have dozens of stories about difficult tenants. With the use of handwriting analysis in the screening process, those check bouncers and midnight movers can be successfully weeded out of the mix. Needless to say, if you have had the unfortunate experience of letting someone awful move into your home, in the future you can avoid it by checking a handwriting sample. Character traits such as honesty, procrastination, and even criminal behavior can be spotted from handwriting. Entertainment at parties and conventions. Handwriting analysts are in big demand at parties and conventions. Corporations and private clients often hire handwriting analysts to analyze writing and give Lectures. Trade conventions, wedding showers, annual meetings, and even cruise ships hire certified handwriting analysts. Most graduates earn US$60 to US$150 per hour for quick,

7 instant analysis and up to US$5,000 for keynote lectures. Many graduates are able to qualify to lecture on worldwide cruises in exchange for free passage. This is a great way to see the world on a limited budget.

Business and professional

Anyone who is entering into a business transaction should first analyze what is on the page of a prospective partner. You will get a clear sense of a person’s integrity, aspiration level, and even ability to tell the truth. As you further study this course, you will gain insight into the valuable skill of employee screening and personality reading to exponentially increase your income and business savvy with certainty.

Employee hiring and human resources

During a recent major network TV news story about the credibility of handwriting analysis, it was reported that “6,000 corporations in the United States now screen all their employees with the help of a handwriting analyst.” That is pretty amazing, considering most of those professional analysts charge about US$200 to US$250 per written analysis. The Wall Street Journal reported that over 80 percent of the top 500 companies in France use handwriting analysis to screen prospective employees. Usually people charge an hourly fee to analyze handwriting and earn an average of $100 an hour. By using a fax machine to receive samples, you can provide a written analysis and expand the reach of your client base--even globally. Screening prospective employees is one of many ways you can make money with this skill.

Police profiling

Police departments and the FBI are two institutions that have been using handwriting analysis frequently over the years to help solve cases.

“I originally came across handwriting analysis purely by accident Since I am in law enforcement, I saw this as an opportunity to further my career in a way that has up to this point been untouched in our field. I have found this skill to be extremely enlightening with regards to solving crimes and interviewing suspects. It has become an invaluable tool that I have become dependent upon to assist me in my career.”

—Miranda Fitchett, police dispatcher and sheriff's deputy Oklahoma, USA

Forgery detection is a very different field than personality profiling. You can be trained to become a court-qualified forensic document examiner and earn $300 per hour or more detecting forgeries. The training is intense, but you will graduate with an active career as a document examiner.

Self improvement and professional speaking

Thousands of lectures and speeches are given every day in every country in the world. While the professional speaker can often earn as much as US$10,000 per hour, opportunities abound for the local lecturer who charges a more reasonable fee--or no fee at all. Many new handwriting analysts choose to use the lecture circuit as a way to introduce hundreds of people to the many benefits of handwriting analysis by giving 20- to 45-minute lectures at clubs and organizations across their local cities. For years, handwriting analysts have been offering simple tips on understanding audience members’ spouses, business partners, and friends by using simple, easy-to-remember examples such as the letters t or o. Even best-selling authors and radio hosts have been known to talk about the self improvement powers of grapho-therapy and the insight one can get into someone’s character from a sample of handwriting. Handwriting analysis has many useful applications, and more are being discovered daily.

“Since I’ve been adding the phrase ‘Handwriting Expert’ on my resume, I have booked SG$300,000 more in business than in previous years as a corporate trainer. I think people are just curious about this science and the fact that I can analyze the meeting planner’s handwriting makes me memorable. I get the job more often than the other trainers who don’t know this science. What’s more, I often get to sprinkle simple graphology tips and tools into my normal lectures and the audience loves it. Who doesn’t enjoy learning about themselves?”

— Enrico Varello, corporate trainer, Singapore

Counsellor, therapist, and coaching applications

Many therapists, , coaches, doctors, and other professionals learn this skill to get insight into their patients. One way to use this skill to earn extra money is to work with professionals, giving advice about their patients at the beginning of therapy. The important thing is that when they first come to sit down with you at a therapist’s office, this can be very useful to begin a relationship between a professional and a client. Compared to other personality tests, handwriting can give a therapist insight in the first five minutes you meet with a client. You can explain the fears, defenses, some limiting beliefs, and far more. You can also explain where the biggest problem areas really are and then identify the best place to start to make changes in the patient. One of the most popular uses of handwriting analysis is to attract new clients for those people in helping such as coaching and personal therapy. Some of our most successful campuses are owned by life coaches or therapists, because the local handwriting analysis classes bring in many qualified people looking for ways to change their lives. When they finally meet a person with the level of insight handwriting analysis reveals, it is only natural that they would sign up for more personal services from the local counselor. Even if someone is trained in just one other counseling skill, such as hypnotherapy, handwriting analysis can be a boon to their business. There are many uses for this tool. As we expand this science worldwide, I’m sure we will discover even more.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is handwriting analysis?

A: It is a scientific method of identifying, evaluating, and understanding personality via the strokes and patterns revealed by handwriting. It is not document examining, which involves the examination of a sample of handwriting to determine the author. Document examining is often used in forgery cases--no comment on character or personality is derived from the handwriting.

Q: What does handwriting reveal?

A: Handwriting reveals the true personality, including emotional outlay, fears, Honesty, defences, and over 100 other individual personality traits.

Q: What can you not tell from a handwriting sample?

A: Handwriting cannot accurately reveal a person’s age, race, gender, religion, or nationality. While there are masculine, feminine, and cultural patterns among certain groups, these patterns are not statistically significant to be able to determine these things all the time.

Q: How does handwriting reveal personality?

A: Handwriting is often referred to as brain writing. Research scientists in the field of neuroscience have categorized neuromuscular movement tendencies as they are correlated with specific observable personality traits. Each personality trait is represented by a neurological brain pattern. Each neurological brain pattern produces a unique neuromuscular movement that is the same for every person who has that particular personality trait. When writing, these tiny movements occur unconsciously. Each written movement or stroke reveals specific personality trait. Handwriting analysts identify these strokes as they appear in handwriting and describe the corresponding personality trait. Handwriting is like body language, but is more specific and is frozen for a more detailed analysis of our unconscious movements.

Q: How accurate is handwriting analysis?

A: It is only as accurate as the analyst is skilled. Most professionals claim to be 85- to 95 percent accurate. Compared to other personality assessment tools and tests, handwriting analysis is sometimes more accurate and much more revealing. When answering psychological questions in person or on paper, a person may consciously or unconsciously answer according to how he thinks he should answer rather than giving an honest reply. The is divided as to the validity of handwriting analysis. Again, it depends on whom you ask.

10

Q: Who uses handwriting analysis?

A: Anyone who is interested in gaining a better understanding of himself and others or making a positive change in his own life:

• Individuals for self-improvement, to gain a better understanding of themselves, and often incorporate aspects of grapho-therapy to change bad habits. • Single people to aid in the selection of compatible partners. • Couples to improve current relationships through better understanding and communication. • People of all ages of the work force, also used in career counseling. • Employers for personnel selection. • The courts for forgery and questioned documents. • Attorneys to aid the jury selection process and in forgery detection. • Law enforcement in investigating evidence involving handwritten notes. • Businesses for credit rating assistance. • Hypnotherapists for fast insight into their clients’ issues. • Psychologists and therapists for personality and therapy. • Professional speakers for engaging audience members.

Q: What about people who print?

A: It is a generality, but this is a question worth answering. People who print have put up a barrier to keep the world from getting to know them. They do not easily express their innermost feelings. People who print take longer to experience intimacy and tend to have a strong external protective mental shell that is often seen as confidence. It is estimated that over half of the men in the United States prefer to print rather than write cursive. This is the same tendency that says, “I'd rather sit here in pain than express my feelings.” Some men learn at an early age to keep their insecure feelings hidden from the world. And, yes, they do often have to print because of their messy handwriting, but the answer still applies.

Q: Why does my handwriting change all the time?

A: Certain strokes represent emotions and moods. As your feelings and moods change from minute to minute, those corresponding particular strokes will change. However, the basic character-defining traits will remain the same. And if you really have a total variation in handwriting styles, you are one moody person and should cut down on the sugar snacks.

Q: What can be told from a person's signature?

A: The signature represents what a person wants the world to see or what he wants to be, an image that may or may not be the same as his inner self. Because a signature contains only a few letters, it does not provide enough information for the analyst to make a complete and accurate evaluation.

11

Q: Does handwriting analysis work in other languages?

A: It depends on the alphabet of the language. The letters that form the foundation for most Latin-based languages are well researched and widely taught. Therefore, all Latin-based languages such as English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, some Russian, etc., are fair game. However, many languages have completely different alphabets, so different analysis techniques must be used. The scientific system taught by Handwriting University applies only to the Latin-based languages and not to Chinese, Japanese, or Arabic alphabets.

Q: What if I’m left handed?

A: Left-handed children learn to write with the same characters as right-handed children. Technically, a trained analyst cannot tell if someone is left- or right-handed. A common misconception is that left-handed people slant to the left. However, only a small percentage of left-handed people slant to the left.

Case studies:

Case 1 –

I went on the internet and typed in Cael Sanderson’s name and up popped 3,222 web sites telling what an incredible wrestler he is, about his wins, accomplishments, and achievements.

So, what is it that makes the boy up the street become an NCAA four time champion with159 wins and no losses and an Olympic Gold medalist, probably the best wrestler in the world?

WHAT MAKES CAEL SO SPECIAL?

Mr. Bart Baggett, who is an internationally renowned handwriting expert, has said there are common traits among successful people. These include high self-esteem, high goals, determination, enthusiasm, integrity, healthy ego, persistence, optimism and strong physical drives, all of which can be seen in a person’s handwriting. As I looked at Cael’s handwriting, he actually had every one of those traits. No wonder he is such a success!

The first letters I looked at were his t’s.

The way you cross a t indicates how high your self esteem and goals are. The length of the t-bar shows enthusiasm. Cael has high self-esteem, good goals and enthusiasm in his handwriting. These traits are evident when you meet him in person. “I always wanted to be the best,” says Cael. When he went to Iowa State, he set a goal to win four NCAA titles. He was the 1st wrestler in to ever accomplish this with 159 wins…and no losses!

He was the 1st wrestler in history to ever accomplish this with 159 wins…and no losses!

In an article I read about Cael, it stated that he dominates his opponents with the three S’s; strength, speed and smarts.

He also has a stroke in his handwriting that tells me he is very optimistic.

13

When you see this in handwriting, you know the writer expects things to turn out right. Cael said, “It seemed impossible to go four years undefeated, but I could always win my next match.”

Steve Sanderson, Cael’s father said, “He never planned on losing. He always prepared and planned on winning.

“He is tall (at 6-foot-1) and uses his leverage to his advantage. Cael is a very, very intelligent wrestler. Combine that with the environment he is in at Iowa State and you have the necessary mix for greatness.

“He is gifted physically with world class speed. He is very strong and very flexible. He is in excellent shape and wears people down. There is really no place you can hide on the mat. His style is relentless.

Sure enough, his handwriting tells me he is a very intelligent person, has a quick mind, sizes up situations quickly and likes to analyze. His brother, Cody, said, “He’s so smart at wrestling, he just watches the video of his opponent one time, and he has a pretty good idea what he’s up against.”

Cael has evidence of intuition in his handwriting, a 6th sense, which has obviously helped him in his wrestling career. “He has an ability to just feel when his opponent is off-balance. It’s unbelievable,” Cody said.

Another trait Cael has in his handwriting is determination. Iowa State heavyweight Mark Knauer occasionally drills with him and made the comment, “You have to be well rested. If you’re fatigued, it could be a long day. He’s a machine”. The same in matches. “He just keeps attacking. He doesn’t stop for anything.” Coach Douglas from Iowa State said about Cael, “He has a tremendous drive and a love for the sport”.

Cael’s handwriting also demonstrates persistence. He has been quoted to say, “One day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time.” Maybe that trait came from having two older brothers who beat up on him. It certainly has served him well over the years; and, along with other traits, has made him perhaps the greatest wrestler this world has ever seen.

As we all know, Cael couldn’t have accomplished what he has without determination, persistence, high self-esteem, etc. But, other things show in his handwriting. Did you know that Cael likes to acquire knowledge, doesn’t like to be told to take the garbage out, makes decisions with his head, rather than his heart, and can be a little sarcastic at times? He is also a little secretive and is not going to tell you or anyone else everything he knows – your secrets are safe with him. And, believe it or not, his handwriting and our phone conversation actually tell me he is a talker; that is, when he wants to be. Average boy-next-door – with more than average drive, ambition…and talent.

14

Case 2 –

The resignation and death of Steve Jobs as CEO of Apple Inc caused a global shock. The iconic CEO has been showing signs of poor health for the past many years. His handwriting defies logic… is this the signature of a revolutionary thinker? Or just a humble computer programmer who thinks out of the box?

Before co-founding Apple, Jobs, a college drop-out, travelled through India in seventies in search of spiritual guidance. Very few people know that he suggested the name of the company (Apple) to co- founder Steve Wozniak after a visit to a commune in Oregon he referred to as an “apple orchard.”

There are several stories about the man — both interesting and inspiring. But we won’t repeat them here. Here, we will analyse his signature against the views held about him.

An inspiring Jobs had a lot of hard edges: According to Jay Elliot, a former vice-president at Apple who worked with Jobs in the eighties, says he was very aggressive and oftentimes alienated colleagues and investors with his my-way-or-the-highway attitude. Elliot said he was a witness to the acrimony between Jobs and former Apple Chief Executive John Sculley who often clashed on ideas, products and the direction of the company. At a meeting in Hawaii, they blew up against each other. Jobs left the company soon after, saying he was fired.

Elliot’s views establish two things about Jobs: first, he was very aggressive, and second, he was acrimonious. Does his signature confirm the two points? Yes, it does. The beginning stroke of the first letter (S), which starts below the baseline, shows Jobs was resentful and he often misplaced his anger. And because he had a right slant, he often expressed his feelings without inhibitions.

Steve Jobs Signature

The second point is about aggression, which is seen in the angular stroke at the beginning of j in Jobs and. When this angularity appears in the middle zone, the writer has a tendency to show aggression in his day-to-day life. However, such a writer, because of his impulsive attitude (shown by the right slant of handwriting), regret his actions. So did Jobs. Here is the proof: About his face-off with

15

Sculley and subsequent departure from Apple, Jobs told a Stanford graduating class in 2005: “It was awful-tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life’s gonna hit you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.”

Hard-working Jobs was a ‘genius’: Former eBay Inc chief Meg Whitman said recently: “Steve Jobs is the business genius of our generation. His contributions to Apple, his contributions to technology, frankly his contributions to America, are unparalleled in the business world. He is amazing.”

According to graphology, people who have simplified handwriting are intelligent. Steve Jobs’s signature is plain and simple. No embellishments, no unnecessary strokes. Plus, Jobs is someone who likes to see jobs done fast, quickly, indicated by the pointed tops of his middle-zone letters, such as those in ‘n’ in Steven. Hence, his productivity has been way above average. Now wonder Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has called Jobs the most inspiring person in the tech industry and President Barack Obama has held him up as the embodiment of the American Dream.

Caustic and forceful with words: Ed Niehaus, hired by Jobs to do PR for Apple, said Jobs liked to push others to do their best. “When Steve Jobs weighs in, it is with a simple set of verdicts: insanely great; really, really great; and shit,” Niehaus said. Being chewed up and spat out by Jobs is an experience most Apple employees who have come in contact with Jobs can relate to, a report says.

As per handwriting analysis, a long t-bar is indicative of the writer’s healthy energy to push things forward, and say things in a very forceful manner. Jobs’s t-bar is fairly long, and appears to have been drawn with a firm pen pressure. Such writers are assertive, and they like to ensure their orders are executed exactly the way they want. The confirmation of this attitude is here: “Basically Steve tells you exactly what he wants and you just go build it,” says a former iPhone engineer.

At the same time, Jobs is a humble man: A look at Jobs’s resignation letter tells you that the man’s feet are on the ground. “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come,” he said in a brief letter announcing his resignation.”

The letter suggests he is a humble man. But people may look at the tone of this letter with cynicism, and say he was just being formal there. So, we look at his signature to ascertaing if this person for whom people use words such as “ruthless, perfectionist and dictator” is capable of being humble.

The answer again is yes. The moderate size of the signature, especially the first letter, confirms that the larger-than-life Jobs is indeed a humble person. In a report, Guy Kawasaki, a former Apple employee, said: “Most mere mortals cannot understand a person like Steve Jobs. He is the greatest CEO in the history of man. He’s just got a different operating system.”

16

Case 3 –

What is the real person behind the pubic image of LADY GAGA? Lady Gaga hand wrote a note while staying in the Chateau Marmont hotel to her fans that were outside waiting to catch a glimpse of the entertainer.

Lady Gaga’s note reads:

“Dear little monsters,

Thank you for singing to me all day and night. I love you with all my heart. You make everyday worth living. Kisses to the cops for keeping you safe.

Love Lady Gaga.”

Starting at the very top just below the Chataeu Marmont picture, we’ll look at the t-bars. You’ll see that she has average t-bars, which is an average self-esteem. You may say “Bart, that seems really odd, she seems to be the most confident person on the planet”. I totally agree with you and if you look down at her signature, you’ll see that she has confidence by the power and the size of her initials in Lady Gaga “L” and “G”. So the initials in someone’s name is about personal confidence and that of course is a part of self-esteem. So we see her t-bar being kind of medium, we know that her internal self-esteem is average, but her ego is very big and therefore her self-esteem is very average or maybe even above average if you want to include the confidence in there.

If you continue going clockwise, you’ll see a worry loop, which is right out of the 301 advanced text book. A worry loop means she tends to worry about things that don’t necessarily happen. A little more over is the cumulative thinker. Now this is interesting, because just over around the 5 o’clock area, is the comprehensive thinker. She has both kinds of “m’s” and “n’s” in her handwriting, this is

17 pretty unusual. This is a sign of , flexibility, a sign of an artist that can both slow down and think kinesthetically and cumulatively maybe even mathematician she can speed up and think very quickly. You’ll find this as unusual trait and she has both of those.

Fluidity of thinking, this is when the “S” is fluid like a “g” or a figure 8, you can see it in the word “monsters” and “singing” and by the way, if you don’t know much about her, Little Monsters is what she calls her fans “Dear Little Monsters” so it’s one of those cute little things she made up.

If you go down the first thing you see that jumps out is the very large loops (in the Y). Now if you read some introductory material on handwriting, you might think that’s only a large sex drive. It’s not just sex drive, any time you have exceptionally large loops, it all goes back to imagination. Gregarious imagination, exaggeration, blowing things out of proportion. So this is really great for imagination, really great with, like in her case costume designing and designing an image. Of course living with her would be complicated, because she would exaggerate small items, she would exaggerate a broken nail. She would exaggerate a fight with her boyfriend, it would all be bigger than necessary and that all would encompass everything to do with her physical life.

Her determination is the next thing on the list, that’s around the 4 o’clock position, notice that there’s just a lot of hard down strokes. They’re both in the ‘p’ and the ‘t’, you can see it in the ‘f’, ‘y’, ‘g’, basically a little bit of a straight down that is determination, when ink is going down a strong descender.

This is an advanced trait, if you look at Lady Gaga her signature, she has a couple of interesting things. The ‘L’ in Lady underlines her name, that is directly out of the Advanced Home Study Course. It is an advanced primary trait, primary means a single stroke on the paper. Advanced means, it’s not one of the basic 90 traits that we learn in the certification course. So that is called Self-Admiration, that is when someone underlines their name with their own name. We also see a weird triangle in the ‘a’, I see this in architectural handwriting quite a bit. It also kind of has to do with a trait called elaboration. If someone makes up their own alphabet and they create their own strokes and their own unique alphabet you would have to call that elaboration and which of course goes back to the idea of being creative and not beating to the same drum. The triangular shape is a masculine shape, anything that’s triangle usually has a masculine overtone as well as aggressive overtones.

The extra large ego and self-confidence we see in the ‘L’ and the ‘G’, especially compared to the middle zone. The middle zone is not that small by the way, make sure you look at the original size, because her middle zone is a healthy middle zone writing. This indicates a nice big social aptitude and of course we see the writing is spaced all over the page, it’s not tiny as it looks like on the sample with all the arrows.

The o’s are very clear and clean, which means she’s blunt, she’s straight forward, looks like there’s some talkativeness in many of those o’s. It’s difficult to get a measurement of the slant, because of a lot of the writing is a bit of printing and a bit of cursive. So slant is not key element to this analysis.

18

If you look up a little bit higher, around the 8 o’clock area, you’ll see the temper stroke. She shows it in the word “heart” and “night, so we see it about 2 out of 10, I wouldn’t say she has too big of a temper.

Interesting, the personal pronoun ‘I’ is actually pretty tiny, which is interesting, because of someone had a huge ego, someone who is arrogant, they would have a big personal pronoun ‘I’. They might have arrogance in their “d’s” and “t’s”, but she doesn’t. I think this kind of speaks to her dichotomy between her public ego and her private ego. I remember when I first heard about her, I YouTubed a video of her singing some Led Zeppelin in a bar when she was 19 or 20, she was in a cover band and she was very talented, but very plain. I think it goes back to her having the creativity to create a public persona and you see this big self-confidence in her signature “Lady Gaga”. But then you also see the personal pronoun “I” and average t-bars, which is more of her authentic self-esteem.

She is dynamic, she is creative, and she is bigger than life and all that does show up with the size of her y’s and the size of her signature.

Finally you look up back to the 11 o’clock position and we get back to the size of that ‘y’. You see triangles, you see openness, you see big and a huge imagination.

Case 4 & 5 –

1) Edward is energetic and aggressive: Edward and Robert are pretty much the same. But, Robert is very stubborn. Notice the letter ‘t’ in ‘Pat’ of his signature. The stems of the letter look like a tepee or a phallic symbol. The more the gap between the two stems at the baseline, the more stubborn the person is. Robert will rarely admit his mistakes and once he makes up his mind, it is very difficult to change him.

2) Edward is sarcastic and humorous: So is Robert — very sarcastic. Notice the sharp edge of the t- bar in Pat. It shows that he is a very sharp-tongued person who is capable of slicing people with his words. People who have the privilege to converse with him will tell you that. Also, Robert sometimes says things impulsively.

3) Edward can’t wait to be with Bella. He is too impatient: Robert is an equally impatient man in reality. He hates to wait. In this signature, you can see that he has not bothered to write his complete name. I have about 20 samples of his signature and in all of them he has left it incomplete. Conclusion: People who don’t bother to finish their signatures and end them with a thread are usually in a hurry, and they don’t have time for many things.

4) Edward talks less and is reticent: But Robert is not like that. Notice that the letter ‘a’ in Pat is open at the top. It indicates that he is a very talkative person and he likes to speak his mind. But sometimes, he ends up saying more than he should, because of which he lands in tough situations. Robert is often inclined to offer advices without being asked for. People around him sometimes feel overburdened by his garrulity.

20

In this letter he wrote to a fan, you can see the most of his a & o are open at the top.

5) Edward knows what he wants: Robert doesn’t. There is a lot of confusion in Robert’s life as far as the choices he makes are concerned. Often, he bites more than he can chew. Robert usually finds himself swamped by work because he hardly plans. The lower-zone letters often touch the lines below.

6) Edward is a quiet man who does not like to socialize: Robert is also like him. Although he looks very confident in public, his internal need, as shown by the small middle zone in his handwriting (see his letter), is to avoid crowds and spend time concentrating on things that he likes to do. His handwriting reveals that he likes to get involved in intellectual pursuits and cultivate reading habit. But because of his lifestyle, he finds less time for himself.

Kristen Stewart

In real life, Robert Pattinson is dating his Twilight heroine, Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan). Let’s look at her handwriting and get to know her better and also find out how compatible they are:

1) Bella Swan is clumsy, vulnerable and feeble: But Kristen is not. She is a strong woman who likes to speak her mind. Notice the large size of her signature in small note she wrote to a fan. It shows that she has an above-average public self-image and therefore it is very tough to push her around.

2) Bella is soft-spoken and sweet: Kristen is like that, but she is also as sarcastic as Robert Pattinson (see the sharp ending of her t-bar). Probably she won’t put up with his caustic remarks. She will fight back in the same way because she is equally sarcastic, which is reflected by the sharp ending of the t-bar in her signature. The actors’ signatures show they have all the ingredients necessary to ensure that the between them are spicy and worthy of eavesdropping.

3) Bella is a good talker: So is Kristen. Notice the figure 8 in her signature. The smooth flow of the stroke is indicative of the actress’s capacity to weave words in a magical way. I don’t know much about her private life, but don’t be surprised if you get to know that she likes to write. Because such figure 8 is usually found in the handwriting of writers and authors.

4) Bella does not like to be told what to do: Kristen doesn’t like that either. In the small note she has written to her fan, notice that she has inserted capital letters in the middle: “For” & “Best”. Clearly, she is breaking the rules of grammar. In behavior, this violation of rule will be reflected in her tendency to ward off everything that comes as a suggestion.

5) Bella is confident and fearless: Kristen is strong. But she does not feel confident. See the low placement of the t-bar in her signature. She usually indulges in extreme self-criticism and does not forgive herself quickly. She hardly allows herself any room for her own mistakes.

Article Analysis:

Article 1 - What large handwriting means & what it says about your personality

http://handwritinguniversity.com/members/weekly-newsletters/international-articles/large-handwriting-means-personality/

1) Thinking big: Large handwriting shows that writer thinks big. His social circle is usually large (unless the word-spacing is abnormally wide), and he has a number of friends. They love to party and remain in groups. The desire to be surrounded by people emanates from their internal need to be appreciated and loved by others. Most celebrities have big handwriting and signatures.

Please note here that I am talking about large handwriting, not medium. I give below two large handwriting samples. One belongs to Paris Hilton, the other to Elvis Presley.

______

2) People’s person: People with large handwriting are usually loved by people because of their flamboyance. They become the life of a party and take initiatives. They like to be around people and get really uncomfortable and egdy when they are left alone.

3) Lack of concentration: Such writers often hate to be tied down to jobs that require monotonous repetition because they cannot stay focused. Their minds wander off quickly. Hence, they do not prove to be very productive on desk jobs. But they exhibit exemplary efficiency when they are put in sales, marketing or public relation jobs. The reason: they love people and connect with them fast.

23

4) Carefree souls: People who have big handwriting do not worry about small things. They are quick to leave behind unpleasant experiences and get on with life. They do not think about anything for long, and prefer to shrug off issues with considerable ease. However, there are exeptions to this conclusion in case the individual writes with high pressure and narrow margin on the left.

5) Ignore them at your own risk: If you are a large writer, you know it very well that you need a lot of attention. Same goes for people with large, flamboyant signatures. They like to remain the centre of attention in social gatherings, and interestingly they leave no stone unturned to ensure they get. Nothing upsets or annoys them more than being ignored.

Article Analysis –

A person with large handwriting is usually an extroverted person, with a large social group, a complete people’s person. However, these people have a lack of concentration and tend to overlook small details. These people don’t worry about small things and usually leave behind unpleasant experiences of life. These people love attention and nothing upsets them more than being ignored.

Article 2 - Why security firms need to utilize handwriting analysis

http://handwritinguniversity.com/members/weekly-newsletters/why-security-firms-need-to-utilize-handwriting-analysis/

As an executive search consultant for over 20 years, and as a professional who offers my clients one of the very best guarantees in my industry, I must produce results. The worst outcome for a recruiter is an unknown or unforeseen problem to arise regarding candidates placed at a client. So, a better way had to be found to give an edge in all areas of personality understanding and evaluation.

As we all know, humans are complex and unpredictable creatures. In my quest to break the genetic code of hiring, I explored many different tools to help my understanding of people in order to create a 3 dimensional view of their , fears and beliefs. My goal was to identify what drives an individual in their decisions outside of what they tell me in a well rehearsed . Armed with this knowledge, I know what further to ask the candidate as well as references with the goal of being able to avoid any land mines (dishonesty traits, depression, etc…).

The early part of my search brought me to the directly examine many of the psychology tests currently available such as Myers Briggs and MNPI, these are well studied psychology tests that take multiple choice answers in from the candidate and spew data out. This in itself is reasonably acceptable and helpful because it places humans in well known categories and does serve as a strong indicator of overall personality. One of the key weaknesses with these tests is they rely on honesty. With the candidate knowing what position they are interviewing for, this seemed too easy for someone to fill in boxes they felt matched the position better. So, the search continues.

It turns out that handwriting analysis is a much more complete way of examining what is truly happening in a person‟s mind. The reason is what you are getting on that handwritten piece of paper is a picture of their mind at that moment which is as unique as their fingerprint. It really is „mind writing‟ since a pen and your hand are merely tools for translating what one‟s mind dictates. Also, handwriting has a unique capability to help determine dishonesty traits such as pathological lying, evasiveness, hypocrisy, insincerity and a loss of morals. These traits will show up in people who have these strong, sociopathic and degenerative personalities.

Fortunately, in the high end recruiting world, rarely do we find these pen strokes since it is extremely hard to ascend to an Executive Vice President or a CEO by having terrible traits.

However, in dealing with the public or someone who is under suspicion, this is a tremendous advantage. There are some writing characteristics that have been proven to show up on 80+% of inmates in our prison system. That in itself doesn‟t mean they committed a specific crime or are up to no good. But think about it! Are those odds you‟ll take in your business? I am sure the Goldman Sachs would take 80% all day long.

Where this can be used to increase profits for your company:

-Avoid hiring your own employees who are interested in out-smarting you!

-Avoid doing business with the wrong person or company

25

-Add as an extra stream of income in divorce or cheating cases. Provide your client with an in depth analysis of „the other person.‟

-Help to solve inside jobs by having all of those possibly involved write what happened in detail at the time of the crime. The culprit may be able to lie. However, their sub-conscious mind has much more trouble. There is no need in strapping guilty and non-guilty employees up to a polygraph. Simply hand them a pen and a blank piece of paper and ask them to write down what happened.

In conclusion, an important distinction must be made. Handwriting analysis is not a predictor of the future. Handwriting analysis, which began in the 1600s before modern day psychology was invented, is based upon scientific study and has no connection with other „un-scientific ways‟ of predicting the future (tarot card reading, psychics…etc). Where this does is to give you an edge is it shows you what stone to turn over or where someone‟s pressure points or weakness are located. Can you think of where this might be helpful? It is truly amazing at the accuracy you will find using this tool

P.S. One question I get is…”Well, what if someone knows handwriting analysis and changes their handwriting just for the test.” My answer is, “I hope so.” The reason is twofold. First, people who are truly rotten to the core know this about themselves and don‟t have much interest in self exploration or enlightenment. So, learning handwriting will expose who they are to themselves! Not a very appetizing idea. Second, if a person takes the countless hours to learn this and then change their handwriting for the better, this shows a person who is committed to lifelong learning and improvement. We call this Graphotherapy. If you consciously change your handwriting to improve yourself, it actually stimulates that part of the brain where that trait originates. If done consistently, the person‟s personality will change…just like changing a habit through repetition in just a month or two. In an extraordinarily rare case where a criminal mind tries to fake it one time, since there is no consistent practice, mistakes and lack of fluidity will tip off a trained handwriting expert and thus expose them for what and who they really are! Isn‟t it time to put the odds firmly in your favor?

Humans are complex and unpredictable creatures. It is truly amazing to find such accuracy using this technique.

Conclusion :

Handwriting is as an instantaneous photograph of your mind. Your nervous system acts as a wire from brain to hand. A thought in your brain is transmitted by electrical impulses through the nervous system and fibers of your body, arm, hand and fingers. The fingers are only vehicles that put it in writing.

The thoughts and feelings in the human mind have an immediate impact in the formation of handwriting. You will be able to spot differences in the handwriting by comparing your own writing samples written in various moods when you are angry, happy, tired or feeling sick. When you compare these different samples you will be able to see noticeable differences in pen stroke usage, even though your handwriting style remains basically the same.

Handwriting is like an instantaneous photograph of the mind. Just like finger prints, no two handwritings are identical.

Having an accurate means of uncovering and understanding basic character and personality traits has many advantages; knowing yourself is not the least of them. A handwriting analysis report can help you gain insights into your own strengths and weaknesses. And though you may have to face some unpleasant truths, it will at least enable you to make wiser decisions for your personal and professional life. Recommendations:

Psychology is an ever growing and developing field of study. As it studies the dynamics of human behavior and brain which is the highest and the most complex system of nature, there is no limit to this study. We are yet exploring and systematizing the many psychological problems or dysfunctions which can possibly exist and occur. Along side we are also developing a number of therapies and treatments to deal with these issues. Hence it makes sense to learn and incorporate new and reliable therapies in the field of . Young students aspiring to make a career in psychotherapy or counseling should be taught novel ways of approach. One needs to be flexible, open to new ideas and should show willingness to learn modern techniques of helping the clients.

Suggestions for improvement:

The qualitative value of this project could have been increased if the entire process of the analysis of a handwriting sample could be included and also what each stroke, letter and angle signifies. However this couldn’t be made possible due to the limitation of the word count.
