GUEST SPEAKER The Hon. Jane Mathews AO Acting Judge Supreme Court of New South Wales
Jane Hamilton Mathews grew up in Wollongong and studied law at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1962. She worked at Allen, Allen and Hemsley for some years before being admitted to the Bar in 1969 where she primarily did legal aid work and criminal cases.
Jane was the first woman appointed to full judicial office in New South Wales. She served as District Court judge between 1980 and 1987 before being appointed to the Supreme Court of New South Wales. With no female colleagues on the District Court, she also spent almost 7 years as the state's only female Supreme Court judge. She held concurrent appointments to the NSW Law Reform Commission as Part time Commissioner (1984-89) and as head (Senior Judicial Member) of the NSW Equal Opportunity Commission (1985-87)
In 1994 Justice Mathews was appointed to the Federal Court and assumed the Presidency of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) and Deputy Presidency of the Native Title Tribunal (1994 -1999). She was Deputy Chancellor of the University of New South Wales between 1992 and 1999, but throughout her career has maintained close ties with other universities. She was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws by The University of Wollongong (1995) and the University of Sydney (2000).
Since retiring from the Federal Court in 2001, Jane has been an Acting Judge on the Supreme Court of NSW, a position she still holds. She has also held appointments as Acting Judge of the Supreme Courts of Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. She has always had a close interest in women in the law, and in 1992 founded the Australian Association of Women Judges. Between 2004 and 2006 she was President of the International Association of Women Judges. Since 2007 she has been patron of the Women Lawyers Association of NSW. In 2005 she was made Officer of the Order of Australia. Since November 2013 she has been chair of the board of EDO NSW (the Environmental Defenders’ Office). Her great passion is classical music, and she travels the world to attend Wagner Ring Cycles. PRESENTATION OF AWARDS DEAN’S MERIT LIST
