" "*^^°f Continued/.... Ashwonh.Chair: Barbara Gee, DeputyP YChair- Olive Wile™llS°n' Trea*"«:t Neville Strowger, Secretary: Trevor r 2- Some of the reasons we are requesting this confirmation are as follows: 1 There has been confusion arising out of complaints concerning unruly behaviour in the pool, especially in relation to who has responsibility for the conduct of members. Recognition in writing of MDA's position would enable MDA officer's to keep order when necessary. 2 The fact that two disabled peoples' clubs now meet on a Thursday night at Stretford Sports Centre has added to the problem at 1 above, especially in relation to Sports Centre staff who have in the past been presented with conflicting demands. 3 There have been preliminary discussions with MDA and Trafford Phoenix Club about a possible merger. This is an issue in which we are aware that Leisure Services Department has expressed an interest - thereby acknowledging the distinct and seperate identities of the clubs. Given MDA's long history of association with Trafford and Stretford Sports Centre we obviously wish to consider this most carefully and are concerned to know that Trafford recognise the established activities of MDA. For these reasons we are requesting the written acknowledgement of Thursday, 8.00 PM - 9.00 PM as an MDA session in the pool. I can confirm that Manchester Disabled Athletes have been allocated shared use of Stretford Sports Centre pool on Thursdays from 8.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. The Leisure Services Committee in 1991 agreed to Trafford Phoenix Sports & Social Club for the disabled using facilities at Stretford Sports Centre including the use of the pool on Thursdays from 8.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. My staff have checked the records at Stretford Sports Centre and can find no booking form for your Club which should be completed at the start of each booking period i.e. April and September. I have made arrangements for a form to be forwarded to you for completion. I fully appreciate your concern regarding shared use of the pool and the district identity of Manchester Disabled Athletes. I feel it would be useful if my Principal Sports Development Officer,At this stage.Brendon King, was invited to attend one of your Committee meetings to discuss 'face-to-face' the issues that concern your Club. You have my assurances that my Department is fully supportive of the opportunities that your Club provides for people with disabilities and currently there is the development of a strategy which will facilitate the continuing development of opportunities. Your Club has been part of the Working Group helping to prepare the Strategy. cont If you wish to discuss the matter further, do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. Yours sincerely Director of Environment & Leisure „/3.

  • Pidgeons of Stretford, Manchester the Family Legend Tells of a Charles PIDGEON Who Was a Court Hairdresser and Wigmaker
PIDGEONs of Stretford, Manchester The family legend tells of a Charles PIDGEON who was a court hairdresser and wigmaker. What we know, however, is that in 1851 William Henry PIDGEON was a 33-year-old hairdresser lodging in Manchester, but born in London. Perhaps it was in Manchester where he may have met Mary Ann GRAY. She was from Pilling, Lancs (near Blackpool). Perhaps they married in Scotland (their marriage cannot be found in England), because it was in Edinburgh where the first of their sons were born. William Henry died of TB in 1860 after the family had moved to Glasgow, and his widow and sons then returned to Manchester, where they settled in Stretford. The Scottish death certificate of William Henry states that his father was also William Henry, a cabinet maker, and his mother was Sarah, whose maiden name was unknown. The only birth record which can be found in London gives his mother as Margaret. As Mary Ann’s mother was a Sarah, perhaps she was mistaken. Additional contributions are from Andrew PIDGEON of Wimbledon, Eileen PIDGEON of Slingsby, Yorkshire and John Walker . Notes: ab. = about, b. = born, bp. = baptised, bu. = buried, d. = died, m. = married, (+) = extra-marital relationship Barton = the registration district of Barton upon Irwell, Lancashire, which includes Stretford, Manchester Chorlton = the registration district of Chorlton upon Medlock, which also includes part of Stretford.
