TRAFFORD NORTH LOCALITY HEALTH PROFILE JANUARY 2021 NORTH LOCALITY: WARDS • Clifford: Small and densely populated ward at north-east tip of the borough. Dense residential area of Victorian terraced housing and a diverse range of housing stock. Clifford has a diverse population with active community groups The area is undergoing significant transformation with the Old Trafford Master Plan. • Gorse Hill: Northern most ward with the third largest area size. Trafford town hall, coronation street studio and Manchester United stadium are located in this ward. Media city development on the Salford side has led to significant development in parts of the ward. Trafford Park and Humphrey Park railway stations serve the ward for commuting to both Manchester and Liverpool. • Longford: Longford is a densely populated urban area in north east of the Borough. It is home to the world famous Lancashire County Cricket Club. Longford Park, one of the Borough's larger parks, has been the finishing point for the annual Stretford Pageant. Longford Athletics stadium can also be found adjacent to the park. • Stretford: Densely populated ward with the M60 and Bridgewater canal running through the ward. The ward itself does not rank particularly highly in terms of deprivation but has pockets of very high deprivation. Source: Trafford Data Lab, 2020 NORTH LOCALITY: DEMOGRAPHICS • The North locality has an estimated population of 48,419 across the four wards (Clifford, Gorse Hill, Stretford & Longford) (ONS, 2019). • Data at the ward level suggests that all 4 wards in the north locality are amongst the wards with lowest percentages of 65+ years population (ONS, 2019). • Wards in the North locality have the highest percentage of BAME communities in Trafford (Census, 2011) • All 4 wards amongst the 5 most deprived wards in Trafford (IMD, 2019) • Around 24% of children are living in poverty and 20% of people living in income deprived households in the North locality (Local Health, 2019). PERCENTAGE (%) OF POPULATION AGED 65++ YEARS BY WARDS IN TRAFFORD (ONS, 2019) Clifford ward has the lowest percentage (9%) of population aged 65+ years in Trafford, followed by 10.8% in Gorse Hill, 13.8% in Longford and 14.5% in Stretford (ONS, 2019). Higher average scores indicate higher relative levels of deprivation. Data for Trafford shows high rates of A&E attendance, emergency and injury admissions in under 5 population. • Three years rolling average from 2017-2020 suggests that 19.8% of Reception year and 35.7 % of Year 6 children are obese and overweight (Obesity Profile, 2020). • Percentage of reception year children with excess weight in Clifford and Longford is better than England average (statistically significant), whereas similar to England average for Stretford and Gorse Hill. • All 4 wards in the North are amongst Trafford wards with the highest percentage of Year 6 children with excess weight. • Although the percentage of Year 6 children with excess weight (35.7%) is below England average for Trafford as a whole (31.5%), the percentages in North wards are statistically similar to England average of 34.6%. Source: Obesity Profile, 2020 NORTH LOCALITY: DISEASE AND POOR HEALTH • Limited data on disease and poor health is present at the ward level, with the most recent data available until the year 2018. • 19% of residents in the north wards reported a limiting long term illness or disability in the census (Census, 2011) • There is a high level of lifestyle related ill-health in the north locality. • 47% more lung cancer cases during the period 2012-2016, applying age-sex-year-specific incidence rates for England to the ward population (Local Health, 2016). • During the period 2013/14- 2017/18: - 34% more admissions for alcohol related harm and the admission ratios across all wards were higher (statistically significant) than England average. - 28% more emergency COPD admissions and the admission ratios across Clifford, Stretford and Longford were higher (statistically significant) than England average. Admission ratio for Gorse Hill was similar to England average. - 42% more emergency admissions for CHD and the admission ratios across all wards were higher (statistically significant) than England average. - 32% more emergency admissions for Stroke and the admission ratios across Clifford, Stretford and Longford were higher (statistically significant) than England average. Admission ratio for Gorse Hill was similar to England average. The latest available data is for the year 2017. • There are wide inequalities in life expectancy and healthy life expectancy across the North locality - Clifford ward has the lowest male life expectancy of 75.6 years across all wards in Trafford (alongside Bucklow-St Martin in the West). Life expectancy for males in Clifford is 4.3 years lower than Trafford and 3.9 years lower than England. - Stretford ward has the second lowest female life expectancy of 81.4 years in females across all Trafford wards. Healthy life expectancy (Male) is 59 years in Gorse Hill, 60 years in Longford and 60.6 years in Stretford. Healthy life expectancy (Female) is 61.3 years in Gorse Hill, 61.7 years in Longford and 62.5 years in Stretford.
