Observations of small carnivores in Son Tra Nature Reserve, a small and isolated protected area in central Vietnam Ulrike STREICHER1 and Larry ULIBARRI2 Abstract Over half the 45.5 km² Son Tra peninsula in central Vietnam is a nature reserve. The peninsula has been isolated from other natural habitat by sea and urbanisation for decades. Various surveys since the 1960s have recorded Large-toothed Ferret Badger Melogale personata, Small Indian Civet Viverricula indica, Common Palm Civet Paradoxurus hermaphroditus, Small Asian Mongoose Herpestes javanicus and Leopard Cat Prionailurus bengalensis; and probably otter (Lutrinae) and Large Indian Civet Viverra zibetha, although the original basis for these two is not available. Several species typical of forest in this region and active at least in large part by day were not found, suggesting that they are possibly susceptible to hunting or need larger landscapes (or both). None of the surveys targeted small carnivores, so some species, particularly nocturnal ones, might have been overlooked. It gives broad indications of the position of fishing cats, caracals, desert cats and jungle cats. Less than ten fishing cats have been reported from Bharatpur. This is the only locality where fishing cats have been seen. Caracals are known to occur locally in Sariska in Alwar, Ranthambore in Sawaimadhopur, Pali and Doongargarh in Bikaner district. Their number is estimated to be less than fifty. Desert cats are thinly distributed over entire desert range receiving less than 60 cm rainfall. Their number may not be more than 500. Jungle cats are still found all over the State except in extremely arid zone receiving less than 20 cms of rainfall. An intelligent estimate places their population around 2000. The study reveals that the Indian hunting cheetah did not exist in Rajasthan even during the last century when ecological conditions were more favourable than they are even today in Africa. The cats are important in the ecological chain specially in controlling the population of rodent pests. -
Phylogeography of Indian Populations of Jungle Cat (Felis Chaus) and Leopard Cat (Prionailurus Bengalensis)
Cat Project of the Month – April 2008 The IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group's website (www.catsg.org) presents each month a different cat conservation project. Members of the Cat Specialist Group are encouraged to submit a short description of interesting projects Phylogeography of Indian populations of jungle cat (Felis chaus) and leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) The family Felidae is well represented in India, with 15 species occurring here, making it the richest in cats worldwide. However, except for the large cats the rest figure very poorly in research and conservation policies in the country, probably because of their rarity and elusive nocturnal habits, coupled with cumbersome bureaucratic formalities in studying rare species. Fortunately, in the past few years non-invasive molecular techniques have been introduced in wildlife research in India, which has made small cat research easier. Shomita has studied diet and habitat use in fishing cat and jungle cat in Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Rajasthan as part of her Master’s dissertation and diet and habitat use in jungle cat, caracal and golden jackal in Sariska Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan for her PhD. Currently she is doing her post doctoral research at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, using non-invasive DNA analysis to address questions related to phylogeography of some small cats, human-large cat conflict and testing molecular techniques to survey small cats in India. This paper’s main objective is to determine whether the exchange rate has positive or negative effects on the trade balance. This study has discovered that the exchange rate unification has a positive effect on the trade balance in the long run. Additionally, this study finds that Exchange Rate and Foreign Direct Investment have positive effects on the trade balance while GDP growth rate and Inflation has negative impact in the long run. As a policy implication, this study suggests that the government should focus on economic stability and effective monetary policies within the country. -

The natural history of the leopard cat Prionailurus bengalensis (Kerr, 1792) was investigated in a seasonal evergreen forest in south-central Thailand by radio telemetry and fecal analysis. Mean overall home range size for male leopard cats (n = 3) was 4.1 km (SD = 1.23 km ) while a female cat exhibited a home range of 2.5 km . Mean one-day movement was 1.05 ± 0.35 km. They exhibited arrhythmic activity (mean = 47%) dominated by nocturnal and crepuscular tendencies. Peak activity (mean = 58%) occurred between 03.01-06.00 h and 18.01-21.00 h. Analysis of feces (n = 25) collected in the field indicated that leopard cats utilized at least 9 prey species dominated by Rattus sp. (28%). Important secondary prey items included: frogs, Mus sp., siamese hare Lepus peguensis, and tree shrew Tupaia glis.
