A REPORT ON PIEZOMETRIC WATER LEVEL DATA IN TALCHER AND IB VALLEY COALFIELD OF MCL

ODISHA

EXPLORATION DEPARTMENT REGIONAL INSTITUTE - VII

CMPDI (A Subsidiary of Coal India Ltd.) , ODISHA

CMPDI

1. INTRODUCTION

Hydrogeological studies provide the necessary information to assess baseline conditions, potential impacts due to mining, and the effects of surface and ground water to the mining process.

As a part of the comprehensive hydrogeological investigation, a network of 40 piezometers in Mahanadi coalfields limited (23 piezometers in Talcher Coalfield and 17 piezometers in Ib valley coalfield) were established to monitor and assess the long term water table variation in the aquifers.

2. INSTALLATION AND SPECIFICATION OF PIEZOMERTERS

CMPDI officers along with MCL officials conducted site reconnaissance in both the coalfields to finalize and fix location of forty new piezometers (Plate 1 and 2). Post site reconnaissance, CMPDI submitted the design and technical specifications i.e. diameter of piezometer, total depth of individual piezometer, casing specifications and construction details etc. for all eighteen piezometers to MCL. Out of the forty piezometers, twenty three are present in Talcher coalfield and seventeen piezometers are in Ib valley coalfield. Schematic diagram of piezometer construction and specifications are presented in Annexure 1

The piezometers generally constructed are of 300 mm diameter with 150 mm galvanized blank and factory slotted MS casing. All casing joints were flush threaded. All piezometers were provided with bottom bail plug.

Washed, well graded gravel with diameter (3 mm - 5 mm) larger than the screen slot size was shrouded in the boring annular space between wall of the boreholes and casing. Thick seal made of clay material was placed at top of the gravel filter pack. The remaining annular space was filled by grouting the Portland cement up to the surface. Central guide was provided at appropriate depths for stability and verticality to the deeper piezometers. Piezometer details are provided in table-2 A and 2 B. Piezometers were constructed with casing extended sufficiently above ground level (0.50-0.88 m above ground surface) to avoid submergence in the event of flooding. A sanitary cover/ seal of Portland cement concrete was used around the piezometer and was graded to drain away from the well to protect the well from direct surface water percolation. All piezometers were subsequently capped and locking arrangements were made to ensure safety. CMPDI
