As the furry member of our family, kitty will want to join in on the festivities. A broken ornament and its accompanying hooks can be ingested, injuring kitty’s gastrointestinal tract. Likewise, they can both cause abrasions to your cat’s mouth if chewed. Candles and potpourri: Scented items, such as candles and potpourri, look and smell appealing, but they can threaten your feline’s health. Candles must be placed well out of your cat’s reach to avoid injuries, such as a burned paw or singed whiskers, or a disaster, such as a full- fledged fire. Potpourri in either dried or liquid form can result in gastrointestinal upset if ingested. The liquid form can also cause chemical burns and lesions to the skin and eyes. Place these items in an area unreachable to kitty, or leave them out of your holiday decorating plans altogether. Plants: Certain plants can cause gastric upset or even be lethal to cats. “Lilies, such as amaryllis and stargazers can cause vomiting, kidney damage and death,” says Deborah Perzak, DVM, owner of Woodruff Road Animal Hospital in Simpsonville, S.C. “Christmas cactus can cause GI upset and low blood pressure, and American holly can cause GI distress and depression. hree words best describe the rare and beautiful Singapura: small, sweet and sensitive. First developed in the early 1980s in the United States, the Singapura breed is known for its small size, large eyes and unusually colored coat. Just as important as its good looks, the Singapura is prized for its loving temperament. “The Singapura’s No. 1 concern in life is humans,” says breeder Aaren Fischer, in Aurora, Colo. “While they get along great with Tother animals, they truly bond with people and want to be in the middle of whatever you’re doing.”

Small, But Athletic Singapuras may be a small breed, but they are just as agile as any other cat. “Many people know that Singapuras are the smallest registered breed of cat, but they might be surprised by the breed’s mus- cularity and athleticism,” King says. “They are not a delicate breed. With little effort, they leap onto counters or into raised cupboards; they climb on shoulders and jump onto mantles, resting on the highest attainable ledge in the room or atop a cat tree.” Registered by both The International Cat Association and the Cat Fanciers’ Association, the Singapura comes in only one recognized coat color: sepia agouti, which is a dark brown ticking on a warm, ivory ground color. The standard calls for barring (which is often called “jewelry”) on both the front legs and back knees. Although the Singapura is uncommon, breeders are hoping the breed’s outgoing personality and attractive appearance will bring more fanciers to this unique cat. c
