The live cuts, some recorded at soundchecks without any audience, feature at least one track from every album since their debut, which include a few old fan favorites that have been reworked since the duo adopted a full backing band. Songs like "She's an Angel", from their debut, They Might Be Giants and "Birdhouse in Your Soul", from their major label debut, Flood , are treated to multiple guitars and a horn section. Conversely, the song "Meet James Ensor" originally appeared on their first full band effort, John Henry (1994) and surfaces here in a bare-bones rendition, with only vocals and an accordion. Besides the aforementioned lack of an audience on several tracks, some tracks have also undergone studio "retooling" - most notably, "Ana Ng," which appeared in its untampered form (with an uncropped intro and without a heavily distorted voice saying, "I don't want the world. ") on the 1994 promo-only release "Live!! New York City." A condensed version of this album was released as Live , which featured 10 of the 24 tracks listed here. Song notes. Matt Thiessen – lead vocals/guitars/piano Matt Hoopes – guitars/vocals Ethan Luck– drums/vocals Jon Schneck – guitars/banjo/bells/vocals John Warne – bass/vocals In his profile on Matt Thiessen’s Pack of Wild Blogs*, Relient K’s lead singer/ guitarist/pianist talks of leading “an anomalous life.” And the band’s latest EP, The Bird and the Bee Sides, certainly is an anomaly – with a total of 26 songs, it stretches the definition of an extended play record like Silly Putty. Ostensibly a collection of b-sides, as the title implies, it also contains a whopping number of new songs – 13, to be precise. Of course, it didn’t start out that way. In between studio albums, Relient K likes to put out EPs. So following the release of Five Score And Seven Years Ago – which debuted at #6 on The Billboard 200 in 2007, becoming the band’s highest charting album to date – the guys decided to make their latest EP something of an alternate career retrospective, comprised of b-sides, demos and other rarities from its 10 year history. While they were at it, they thought, why not record a few new tunes, too? “That materialized into ‘hey, why doesn’t everybody in the band write a song?”’ recalls Thiessen. If you know Relient K, you know to expect the unexpected, and have no doubt surmised that this is where the project veered madly out of control. “All of a sudden, it turned into a 13-song original thing.” That 13-song original thing, which kicks off the disc, is called The Nashville Tennis EP.

Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.
