Bothy Stores is a social enterprise bringing to the market the Artist Bothy a stripped-back that recalls the simplicity and authenticity of traditional mountain bothies. The compact prefabricated cabin is easy to transport and install on any site – instantly introducing a space for creativity, relaxation or exploration that is immersed in its surroundings.

The story of the Artist Bothy began back in 2011, when artist Bobby Niven and architect Iain MacLeod teamed up to work on an idea for a remote residency space in the . The simple shelter they designed was installed in a traditional woodland area in the National Park. It has since welcomed many artists looking to experience off-grid living in a spectacular and isolated setting. That initial structure marked the beginning of the Bothy Project – a charitable organisation that operates a network of unique residency spaces created in collaboration with artists, designers and makers. The Artist Bothy is a haven inspired by the simplicity and seclusion of traditional mountain bothies. Designed for now but drawing on the past, the Artist Bothy seems to belong in any setting. It transforms a special location into a destination, where people and nature can coexist. It is a place to relax, think and create, which can be customised to suit your unique requirements.

The bothy is built to last a lifetime and is designed with care to impact minimally on its setting. A commitment to craftsmanship and honest, hard- wearing materials lends the bothy a robust yet cosy character. The timber-lined interior is extremely easy to maintain and will only improve with age as the surfaces develop a characterful patina. The single room can be customised by specifying furniture that activates the interior and transforms the simple space into a comfortable and practical away from home. specification We have specified materials that are seen in various guises in in the UK. Water, waste and electrical connections will need to be implemented on site. The Bothy has integral surface water drainage with concealed downpipes. Furniture for the Artist Bothy is designed and manufactured by Scottish furniture maker, Colin Parker. Each of the items was developed in collaboration with the Bothy Stores team to slot neatly into the interior and complement its handcrafted feel.

Its gabled form recalls typical agricultural buildings and allow the bothy to slot inconspicuously into any rural setting, while the precise lines of the corrugated-metal and larch cladding introduce a contemporary edge. The compact floor plan is large enough to comfortably accommodate small groups, and the pitched roof makes it feel surprisingly spacious inside. Tall windows maintain a connection with the surrounding scenery and ensure the interior remains bright throughout the day.

The comfort of an ensuite bathroom is perfect for holiday accommodation and houses looking to add a self-contained bedroom. The bathroom comes fitted with a shower, toilet and sink ready for connection to services on site.

The +2 extension is wrapped in timber distinguishing it from the original bothy which retains its balanced proportions.

The Artist Bothy is fabricated using a digitally- manufactured building system developed in collaboration with BlokBuild. In this process sheets of OSB are cut into labelled parts on a CNC machine and assembled by hand into cassettes before being fully insulation and sealed.

This system is used for both the volumetric and flat- pack version of the Artist Bothy.
