To fulfill these requirements, this investigation aimed to implement feeding strategies to reduce the cost and energy level of diets for dairy breed lambs slaughtered at an older age than the light lambs, applying a feed restriction at 75% and/or including an inexpensive and local byproduct, such as durum wheat bran (DWB), as a fiber source. The proposed feeding plans were suitable to increase the slaughter age of lambs up to 120 days and produce lean carcasses that, compared to those from 90-day-old lambs, were heavier and with improved meat quality in terms of major water retention and tenderness. -

[email protected] (Corresponding author) Summary Animal physiological functions involve enzymes and cofactors. Many of these substances can not be synthesized by the body, but derive from the diet. An example are micronutrients, that strongly affect production performance, whose requirements are often met by the farmers by adding supplements to the diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic variability of Italian sheep breeds searching for possible selective sweeps that harbor genes involved in the metabolism of micronutrients in. SNP A sample of 496 sheep belonging to 20 breeds farmed in Italy were genotyped with the Illumina Ovine 50K beadchip. Data were analysed by canonical discriminant analysis (CDA). Forty SNP located in regions of the genome containing loci involved in the metabolism of vitamins and minerals were detected. in particular, genes linked to the metabolism of vitamins and minerals such as Selenocysteine Lyase (SCLY), calcium sensing receptor (CASR), Solute Carrier Family 23 Member 1 (SLC23A1) and Thiamine Triphosphatase (THTPA) were highlighted. European Regional Focal Point for Animal Genetic Resources (ERFP) 21 st April 2011 ERFP Country report 2010 – 2011 COUNTRY: ITALY reported by: Giovanni Bittante Strategic Priority Area 1: Characterization, Inventory and Monitoring of Trends and Associated Risks The inventory of Italian animal genetic resources and the monitoring of trends and associated risks has been undertaken and summarized il the paper "Italian animal genetic resources in the Domestic Animal Diversity Information Systm of FAO" (Giovanni Bittante, 2011, Italian Journal of Animal Science,vol 10:e29, Annex 2). Several research activities on this topic have been carried out by Universities and Research Institutions. Among them see the important activity of ConSDABI (Annex 3). Strategic Priority Area 2: Sustainable Use and Development Beyond the systematic control of animals of Italian populations (herd books, pedigree registries, milk recording, type evaluation, etc.) made by the different associations of breeders, as outlined in Annex 2, several projects dealing with sustainable use, products valorisation and development has been carried out by national and local governments, agencies, breeders associations and consortia. Since displaying different mutational properties, bi-allelic markers could reconstruct dissimilar scenarios with respect to long-established Short Tandem Repeats (STRs). Here we present the results from the genetic characterization of seven Italian breeds using 111 SNPs, compared to those previously obtained from 19 STR loci typed on the same popula- tion sample (Sarda: 97; Comisana: 67; Altamurana: 83; Leccese: 86; Gentile di Puglia: 74; Bagnolese: 33; Laticauda: 30). All the 111 SNP loci resulted to be polymorphic in the total sample, with only six loci being monomorphic in at least one breed. Af- ter pruning of loci displaying MAF<0.1, a total of 103 SNPs were left in the overall sample dataset. -

In order to enhance the textile value of Italian native and local wools, research projects were carried out by starting mapping wools from some Italian sheep breeds through a preliminary morphological characterization of wool fibres. Furthermore, textile processing procedures differing from the commonly used woolling techniques have been set up. The results have shown that, at national level, native and local wools, beyond being more widely employed in the carpets production, could be also used in the higher added value sector of clothing and fashion. -

The ICAR Board at its meeting on 19th July 2016 approved the Terms of Reference for the SGC-WG to replace the three existing groups SGC-WG : terms of reference Considerations To date, the focus of ICAR activities for sheep & goats has mainly been on milk recording and the existing WG work closely together (joint meetings) Animal fiber WG covers small ruminants species (sheep, goats) and a range of small camelids including alpacas, llamas and vicunas. There is a demand and need for ICAR’s guidelines to be extended to include meat and wool production especially from sheep.
