Evaluation of the Economic Tourism-Related Impact and Event
Evaluation of the economic tourism-related impact and event experience related to the 2018 Ice Hockey World Championship in Denmark (English summary of the original report) This summary of the original report is written by: Henrik Toft, Associate Professor, University College of Northern Denmark Authors of the original report: Henrik Toft, Associate Professor, University College of Northern Denmark Martin Fonnesbech-Sandberg, Economist, VisitDenmark Lars Falk, Associate Professor, University College of Northern Denmark Kenneth Cortsen, PhD, Researcher, University College of Northern Denmark Preface This document summarises a Danish report on the economic tourism-related impact and event experience relating to the 2018 Ice Hockey World Championship held in Denmark. The underlying data for the report were jointly collected by the University College of Northern Denmark and CPH Business, and by students from these two educational institutions, who conducted more than 900 interviews. In addition, the event organisers provided ticket-sales statistics and background information about the event. These sources provided the underlying data for the original report and hence for this summary. Therefore, I would like to thank these contributors for their work. 1 1. Introduction In May 2018, a new chapter in Danish sports history was written when the IIHF 2018 Ice Hockey World Championship (hereinafter “the 2018 IHWC”) was held in Denmark for the first time ever. The best sixteen ice hockey nations played 64 games at Royal Arena, Copenhagen, and Jyske Bank Boxen, Herning, and more than 350,000 tickets were sold to 238,000 spectators,1 who attended the games. An event of this size and complexity requires a lot of careful planning. -
Royal Arena Copenhagen Welcomes Over 1 Million Fans in Only 20 Months
ROYAL ARENA COPENHAGEN WELCOMES OVER 1 MILLION FANS IN ONLY 20 MONTHS COPENHAGEN (17 Sept, 2018) – Live NAtion-operAted RoyAl ArenA in CopenhAgen hAs welcomed its one millionth visitor just 20 months After opening. This landmArk milestone wAs reAched during a sold-out Jeff Lynne ELO concert lAst night. The 16,500-capacity Arena has had an incredible year with international stars like Depeche Mode, Kendrick Lamar, Sam Smith, Justin Timberlake, U2, Bon Iver and Paul McCartney on the bill. The venue opened with a trilogy of sold-out Metallica shows and events have continued ever since. Dan Hammer, CEO of Royal Arena, says: “The numbers speak for themselves. However, the credit should go to the extremely talented Danish organisers, who work hard each day to attract musical mega stars and major sporting events to Copenhagen and Royal Arena. Their efforts are world-class. “The Ice Hockey World Championship in May was a unique, profitable experience for both the city and the arena, but such events do not come to Denmark by themselves. I am sure that the event will serve as a positive example of the fact that it pays to invest resources and finances in attracting experience-driven customers. “One of the keys to our success is an extremely varied programme with many different music genres, traditional sports, e-sports, stand-up and amazing shows. I am particularly pleased that we have attracted highly coveted Danish names such as Nephew, Anden and Lukas Graham on the programme.” The Danish business community has also given the arena a warm welcome, with a total of 125 companies currently members of the Audi Club, which is Royal Arena’s commercial network. -
