Bulletin NEW YORK CYCLE CLUB Cyclocross Winter Training by Karl Dittebrandt To stay in shape a few winters back, I did a few cyclocross races- three or four, just for fun. In 2001, the Cyclocross National Championships was held in Baltimore, Maryland in December. As I have done the National Masters Championships on the track for the last 9 years and I had a little cross racing experience, I thought I would give it a shot. The Nationals is the only place I can compete against riders my own age and there's always a lot to learn from more experienced riders. The best riders in the country seem to converge at the Nationals. So my regular cross partner, Regina Hammond, and I rented a car and headed to Baltimore for a weekend of racing. I ended up in much better place than I expected — finishing 7th out of 20 riders in my field. This was fairly amazing as first I had a crash and then my shoe came off. After going back for the shoe, I was happy to to finish at all. ARTICLES Ruth Oldenziel MODE OF THE PAST OR PROMISE FOR THE FUTURE? Cycling in China and the Sustainability Challenge, 1955–Present In today’s Global North, cycling – and e-biking for that matter – is promoted as a sus- tainable alternative to the private mobility of cars. In particular, policymakers in the US and Europe are placing high hopes on e-bikes as a sustainable urban solution for the future. Despite the green status of bicycles as ecologically sustainable vehicles, most people and governments embrace cycling for economic rather than ecological reasons. The urban bicycle – other than its touring or sports equivalent – has been a practical solution for working-class transit needs for over a century. Bicycles offer people great flexibility, low maintenance, fuel independence, and relative invulnerabil- ity when facing bad road conditions. In rural areas and small towns in many parts of the world, bicycles are the only form of fast, flexible, affordable, and reliable transport. And compared to walking, cycling enlarges people’s action radius almost fifteen times, giving access to job opportunities otherwise unavailable to the working poor. 1 Hurry-Slow: Automobility in Beijing, or a Resurrection of the Kingdom of Bicycles? Glen Norcliffe (York University) Boyang Gao (Central University of Finance and Economics, Beijing) Abstract During the Maoist era substantial sums were allocated to building infrastructure segregating bicycles and other slow moving vehicles from motorized vehicles in China’s major cities. This was accompanied by the development of a large domestic bicycle manufacturing sector, the result being to create what has been dubbed the ‘Kingdom of Bicycles’. Post-Maoist China has seen the rise of automobility, with rapid growth of car ownership, as well as a shift to collection and deliveries by motorized vehicles. Transport infrastructure in Beijing has not been able to keep pace with this rise of car ownership despite a huge investment in roads, expressways and urban transit systems, with the result that urban traffic is frequently congested and atmospheric pollution sometimes severe. Motorists have put pressure on cycling spaces including demands to convert cycling lanes for motor vehicles, and to exclude cycles from spaces to which they formerly had access. But congestion and pollution has forced planners to resist, and re-think the role of cycles. Recently there has been a rising interest in recreational riding, e-bikes have become very popular, bike-sharing has rapidly expanded on campuses and in the city, and bicycles and tricycles have found new commercial niches, including delivering on-line purchases and hot meals to working couples.
