Please do not go in the church if you have been told that it is full or the sign in the doorway says that the church is full. Here are some tips to remember and help your ushers: 1. Dress as if you might have to stand outside in the cold. You can sit in your car and tune your radio to FM 87.7 to listen to the service. The reception has been better recently. 2. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the Liturgy begins (the Hours begin at 9:40 AM) if you need to be inside. If you arrive late, or just as the service starts, the church will already be full. 3. If you can rotate out, please let the usher know so that they can let someone else in for part of the service. Please do consider rotating. 4. So said Ekaterina Z., an informant from Novosibirsk, born in 1978. While Ekaterina’s opinion has some merit, as we will see, the urban Russian funeral has not been a stable ritual throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. In fact, it reflects attitudes from both the Soviet period and the post-Soviet period, attitudes which demonstrate how social values have changed over these periods. This paper is based on thirty interviews about funerals with residents of Novosibirsk and Vladimir, Russia (or with emigres to America). The informants ranged in age from 26 to 73 years of age and included 25 women and 5 men. 27 were Russian; the remaining three identified themselves as Tatar, Bashkir or Mordvin. They are representatives of the urban working and middle classes; most attended VUZy (institutions of higher education). 17 were from Novosibirsk and 13 from Vladimir. Most of the funerals they described took place in those locations between 1966 and 2003, although one funeral took place in Chita. In order to evaluate the validity of Ekaterina’s statement, we must first examine the traditional 19th century village funeral.

Truly He is risen! What a joy to greet each other with these words, to sing them in different languages, to let them burrow deep into our hearts and then to watch them spring back out again. Yet there is a poignancy to these words as we go about our lives in this broken world, with its pains and heartaches. Yes, Christ is risen. But there is still much suffering and death around us. The joy and poignancy are particularly intertwined on Radonitsa (the Day of Rejoicing), which falls on the second Tuesday after Pascha. On Radonitsa, we go out to the cemeteries to sing the Paschal hymns to those in the graves. While we have always sung at the graves of the sisters who preceded us, for the first time, one of our very own sisters – Mother Olga – was there. Every year, more of our friends are in their graves. Then, there are the many people we don’t know – among whom are infants who lived just a few hours or days and paupers whose graves bear only a simple marker with a number. How many tears were shed at those graves (or even more sadly, how many tears HAVEN’T BEEN shed at the forgotten graves)! Yet in this place of death, the cry of Christ is risen bears its greatest power. To sing these words in church is one thing.
