NOVEMBER 2012 7 RETURN OF THE NATIVE: PIONEERING JOURNALIST CHRISTINE BRENNAN STILL BRINGS A LOVE OF THE GAME TO HER JOB.

by Richard Rothrock

“I love Toledo. It is home. I love being part of the community.”

8 NOVEMBER 2012 or Christine Brennan, being the guest of honor at this year’s Toledo Club FPresident’s Dinner is just another opportunity to visit the city where she was born and raised and which she remains unashamedly proud of. “I love Toledo. It is home. I love being part of the community,” she says. Though she spends most of her time traveling the world covering sports for ABC-TV, ESPN, NPR, and Fox Sports Radio, as well as writing a weekly column in USA Today, she has not strayed far from her Glass City roots. In fact, she believes those roots are what helped make her the success she is today. She makes no bones about the fact that she loved growing up in the Glass City. RETURN OF THE NATIVE: “We loved going downtown for the fireworks. Dad would also take us to play at the Par 3 course that was on Talmadge and Monroe where The Anderson’s is now.” PIONEERING The Toledo Museum of Art was another favorite family destination. “We took all those Saturday morning classes,” she laughed. JOURNALIST “Either art appreciation classes or painting. I loved that. I think I took every program they offered.” CHRISTINE The Toledo Club was another place at the center of her childhood. “My mom and dad were members so we grew up at The Toledo Club. We were down there for lunch. We swam in BRENNAN the pool. We had birthdays at The Toledo Club. We did Christmas Brunch there and Easter Brunch. My sister’s wedding reception STILL BRINGS was there. The Toledo Club was a huge part of our lives.” Growing up in Old Orchard and Ottawa Hills, Brennan got A LOVE OF exposed to history at a very early age. “I remember being on Bancroft Street when I was only two, on my THE GAME dad’s shoulders, and watching John Kennedy’s motorcade go by when he was running for president,” she recalls. “But sports were always TO HER JOB. at the center of things. We had Toledo Mud Hens season tickets and University of Toledo football tickets.” Not to mention family sojourns up to Ann Arbor to watch the Michigan Wolverines compete under legendary coach Bo Schembechler and over to Detroit to watch the Tigers play. The late 1960s and early 1970s was a golden age for sports in this area and Brennan grew up at the center of it. continued on page 10

February 22, 1933 – “I am born in Brooklyn, New York, to a family in which my mother, Cora Kaelin Raffaele; two older sisters, Jean and Audrey, and an aunt, Mae Kaelin, are the constants; my father, Joseph Marino Raf- faele, is rarely present. During a solitary childhood, when I am often ill, I develop my own inner world; nature is my most faithful companion.” So begins the autobiographical chronology of the artist who painted the three striking prints newly hung in the lobby of The Toledo Club’s motor entrance. The members who assembled the club’s collection of paintings had a penchant for Western American art, especially that of 19th century landscapes. Joseph Raffael, however, is a surprising departure. Long one of contemporary art’s most highly regarded painters, his work challenges classification, but clearly has deep roots in Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism. He is best known for his luminous paintings of flowers, Japanese koi, gardens and lily ponds; subjects that reflect his deep regard for nature. A sensitive and lonely child who grew up in a household of women, the artist was happiest when ice skating, roller skating and spending summers with his family on Long Island. He also The Toledo Club’s three watercolors of a lily by Joseph Raffael enjoyed drawing and watching movies. Raffael nearly died from spinal meningitis when he was seven and spent most of his youth in poor health. Housebound, he found solace and inspiration in nature and music, literature and art. Drawing and painting, especially, provided an outlet for all that was stressful and also helped him engage with the outside world. When he was able to return to school, he joined the Art Club and soon after began taking life drawing lessons at the . November 1947 – “My mother dies after a long illness. The theme of death and near death recurs throughout my life and deeply affects my life.” From 1953-54, Raffael attended where he was strongly influenced by Abstract Expressionism. It helped him “let go and see the whole picture,” he said. In the summer, he attended the Yale University-Norfolk (Connecticut) School of Music and Art on a fellowship, then moved to New Haven to attend the Yale School of Fine Arts. There he studied under the celebrated German emigre , formerly a professor at the prestigious Bauhaus, who was best known for abstract painting. In his autobiographical chronology, Raffael notes that Albers spoke to him only once in two years, “saying just a few sentences and once only ‘Aachhh!! Boy!! Sh..!!!’”

Is it good or bad that the Toledo economy is so dependent on the Detroit automobile industry? While you are discussing this question, here are a few auto facts courtesy of the October 2012 Discover magazine. Contrary to legend, Henry Ford’s Model T originally came in a variety of colors and black was not one of them. He switched to black in 1913 to simplify production. The motor vehicle fatality rate in the US has dropped by 80 percent in the last 50 years. The contact patches, the part of the tire that touches the road, cover an area of just over 100 square inches. Everything your four tires do for you covers a piece of ground scarcely bigger than your own two feet. Carnegie Mellon University has developed car lights that can track rain droplets but not illuminate them. Therefore rainfall is nearly invisible as you are driving. Talk about high stakes betting; this year Nevada became the first state to issue licenses for self- driving cars. Google says its modified autonomous Toyota Prius has completed more than 300,000 miles accident-free. The AMC Gremlin, often cited as one of the ugliest cars ever, was designed by Bob Nixon, a man ahead of his time. He created the high-hood, sloping- side-window look of today’s SUVs.

Greetings& Tavern Fans! Sunday Funday! That’s our working title for the Tavern Sunday hours in the fall. I hope you were able to join us in October for great NFL matchups completely marred by shoddy officiating! If you didn’t stop by on Sunday Funday, join us in November for great pub food and some beers. We’ll see you from 11 AM to 7 PM on November 4, 11, 18 and 25. It’s a great way to unwind after a squash match, or to avoid the crowds elsewhere. I’ll be looking forward to Da Bears and Da Beers, and, frankly, De Beers as well, if I can get it. (Are you listening, Robert Mirakian?) Also, mark your calendars for some great social events brought to you by our members! There’s an OSU / Michigan party on November 24, which you will not want to miss, especially if you need recreation for out of town relatives. There’s a junior/intermediate Mixer on November 29, and don’t forget to stop by the Tavern to keep the party hopping after Member’s Jam on the 16th and the Armed Services Dinner the following night. Even if you don’t enjoy football, remember that you can grab a nightcap after any weekend cultural event. We’ll keep the light on for ya. Cheers!! Ashley
